Josh Ritter - All Some Kind Of Dream (Demo) Lyrics

I saw my brother in a stranger's face
I saw my sister in a smile
My mother's laughter in a far off place
My father's footsteps in each mile
I thought I knew who my neighbor was
We didn't need to be redeemed
Oh, what could I have been thinking of?
Was it all some kind of dream?

I saw my country in the hungry eyes
Of a million refugees
Between the rocks and the rising tide
As they were tossed across the sea
There was a time when we were them
Just as now they all are we
Was there an hour when we took them in?
Or was it all some kind of dream?

I saw the children in the holding pens
I saw the families ripped apart
And though I try I cannot begin
To know what it did inside their hearts
There was a time when we held them close
And weren't so cruel, low, and mean
And we did good unto the least of those
Or was it all some kind of dream?

I saw justice with a tattered hem
I saw compassion on the run
But I saw dignity in spite of them
I prayed its day would finally come
There was a time when we chose our sides
And we refused to live between
We rose to fight for what we knew was right
Or was it all some kind of dream?

Last night I lay in my true love's bed
And she lay there close beside
And we lay thinking 'bout what lay ahead
And wondering if the sun would rise
For it seems that these are darker days
Than any others that we've seen
Oh, how we wished that we weren't wide awake
And this was all some kind of dream

Oh, how we wished that we weren't wide awake
And this was all some kind of dream

Love this! Thanks for having the courage to write and post this song. We belong to one human family, we have just been torn apart by those who have forgotten and want the rest to forget as well. I too try to avoid the politics of the day, but am finding these "politics" nothing more then a distraction to keep humanity divided while the 1% pillage and destroy without hardly a notice.

I recently listened to another song written quite recently by Larry Long, a musician in Minneapolis called White Sheets, I believe. But much like your song, when I heard his...I thought "you know times are tough when the songs are being written."

  3. T.... O....

This is so good. I think everyone needs to hear it and that they need to listen to it until they feel it.

It cut me to my core the first time I heard it, but some shut their eyes and ears. They poison their own hearts rather than recognize their complicity in destroying these families.

I thought I knew who my neighbor was...

Where is your song protesting President Obama's long standing policy of detaining children? Also more illegal immigrants were deported under Obama than Trump, Bush II, or Clinton.

    D.... ....

Derek Why does it have to be one or the other? I can feel like Obama could have done better by immigrants AND be appalled at what we are doing now. Also, FWIW Obama didn’t separate families at the border and cage children. Not like this.

Way to go! Thank you for the dream now let's hope the others get the reality of it! Peace forever!

    My heart is broken 💔

  7. D.... R....

Thank you for writing this. We need a sound track to spur us to compassionate, effective action, in these dark days. Please do more in this vein!

  8. S.... S....

Beautiful and heartbreaking. This song is perfect.

  9. M.... R....

    Thank you for this.

  10. T.... B....

Thank you Josh Ritter! What a beautiful song - any small thing like this helps just a little - for just a few minutes. Bless you!

  11. C.... ....

    Beautiful and powerful!

  12. B.... A....

No way can I express the feeling this song gives me

  13. d.... ....

I don't know if I've ever bothered to comment on youtube before. I don't intend to make a habit of it. Thank you , Josh. You do us obies proud. You speak the pain almost too perfectly.

Throughout history the poets, writers, musicians played a vital role in change be it revolution or evolution. Great change has always came with it's own sound track. Those who have an audience must use their talents to spread the word, those who have talent must use that talent to give comfort to the weary, strength to the weak and bravery to the frightened. We will need all the help we can find to get us through these hard hard times.

  17. E.... ....

Ouch, my feels. Josh, you are amazing. Simply amazing.

I've been a Josh Ritter fan for years...seen him play in front of 20 people when he was just getting started, and have seen him play in front of 5,000 people. I've driven all over the country to watch him live. Have every album and song he's ever recorded. This song is lame.

  19. J.... S....

When someone actually tells the truth these days....it sure feels good; lets all get back to compassion an acceptance of diversity...truly is our nation's strength; thanks I am sure this great tune will lift and eye brow or two and open many people's hearts; it works for me.

  20. T.... L....

You should call your next album "Virtue Signal"

  21. T.... L....

Why didn't Josh write songs like this when Obama was in office? He had children in holding pens as well... The famous picture was from his term.(2014). The answer to the question is no he did not seem to care then. Obama has a (D) next to his name so it was cool, or nobody even knew because the media wouldn't dare report that. Only because they are trying to constantly paint Trump in a bad light, is the reason this song even exists. Wake up.

    T.... L....

I really don't care to legitimize your comment so I'll just point out the main flaw in it. The children President Obama held in custody were unaccompanied minors, children who showed up with out an adult. President Obama wasn't ripping children from their parents arms. I also don't remember hearing about how the government under Obama "lost" hundreds if not thousands of children.
The media isn't trying to paint trump in a bad light they merely report on the things he does. Seriously do you really believe that every credible news outlet in the world are lying and Fox and Briebart and the blatant right wing propaganda sites are the only ones telling the truth? Seriously if you'd just pay attention you'd find trumps contradicts himself on a fairly regular basis. When two or more conflicting statements are made by the same person at least one of them must be a lie. There is no such thing as Alt. facts it's just a fancy way to tell a lie.

    T.... L....

    1oldgoat Amen

  22. P.... L....

We send their countries billions of dollars. Protest their governments that chose not to take care of their own. Why don't they use the money we send to educate, feed and make their plight better?

  23. 1.... ....

As I listened to this I could not help but think about the last few lines in Springsteen's master piece Jungle Land.
"The poets down here don't write nothing at all. They just stand back and let it all be and in the quick of the night they reach for their moment and try to make a honest stand but wind up wounded not even dead tonight in jungle land"

Through out history the poets, the musicians, writers and performers have played a vital role in revolution and in the resistance.
Have no doubt about it this nation is poised on the razors edge of full blown revolution. Does anyone believe that trump and the republicans are just going to walk away if the vote doesn't go their way. They have shown time and time again that our way of government means nothing to them, a foreign power that is still our greatest adversary meddled in our elections and now have their people in place for their final push. What has those who now control our government done ? Nothing not a thing but deny that anything nefarious took place even though the evidence proves other wise.
The values we once held dear, the values that allowed a mish mash of different religions, different colors of skin, different languages and different cultures to grow into the strongest and wealthiest country on the planet those same values are now looked at as a weakness to those who have stolen power. The people they are supposed to represent are looked at as nothing more than a nuisance by them. Cheap labor and cannon fodder.

Thank you Josh Ritter for speaking up and standing up to what you and most others see as wrong. Thank you for taking a side and joining the fray may God bless us.
By the way just as almost everything you have written it is a great song. Sorry it had to come in our current predicament.

  24. 1.... ....

Thanks for putting out a song that has us wondering just where our country has gone. What we are seeing happening now does not reflect the values America used to stand for.

  25. M.... B....

I am SO looking forward to hearing your work with Jason Isbell... my two favorite writers/artists... amazed that fate has brought you two together.

  26. G.... S....

    Superb!

  27. a.... ....

These are the kind of beautiful lyrics and pain in the reality of their meaning that only you can give us. I'm so happy to be alive at the same time Josh Ritter is releasing music. 💔

  28. C.... C....

I often think that if we can see strangers as people who are loved by people and treat them as we would want our loved ones treated everything would be right with the world. Or at least it would be a start. Beautiful song. <3

This is absolutely amazing. I cannot wait to hear your next album, Josh, and can't wait for you to come back to Cleveland!

  32. L.... B....

Thank you! Sometimes it seems impossible to not be political......

  33. G.... ....

    Absolutely beautiful and sobering.

  34. C.... S....

Josh - Thank you! Thank you. As I told you a million years ago in Chicago - I'm so proud of you and your songwriting. This one is my new favorite.

  35. S.... G....

Beautiful. Thank you so much for writing and sharing this!

  36. T.... K....

Just like The Animal Years, the one positive from the current political climate is the music it inspires in Josh Ritter.

  37. M.... F....

Saw this live a month ago and am so glad to see it being shared more widely. Beautiful song with heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics!

  38. d.... ....

This is beautifully powerful! Thank you for sharing the honesty of what I feel -

  39. r.... ....

Mr. Ritter, with this my songwriting hero you have transcended to be the spiritual-heir to Bob Dylan. That's not to say that I didn't already see you that way, it's just this reconfirms it. You are a treasure and the real thing among an ocean of us writers who just try our best to measure up As with most of your catalog, another gift for those of any taste and patience willing to listen. Thank you. More songs like these please. These are the important ones!

    rmzzz76 indeed

  40. C.... ....

Damn Josh, back at it again with the great songs!

  41. N.... B....

Thank you for this lovely gift! It was so moving when you played it live, I have been wanting to hear it again. So sad that these things even need to be thought, much less sung. Sing it loud and often !

  42. K.... W....

    Beautiful and timely.

  43. R.... ....

Thank you for expressing something I have been thinking and encouraging people to reclaim the dream.

  44. D.... W....

Wonderful, beautiful song about love. Thank you.

  45. C.... ....

Artists are needed/called at times like these, Josh to feel in pain as others do, but to speak and sing in ways others can't. It is a special calling, dangerous, compelling and needed. Thank you for this song.

  46. R.... C....

    Great back on track!

  47. l.... ....

Loved hearing this for the first time at Red Rocks... Breaks my heart but gives me hope. Let's all VOTE in November!

  48. J.... C....

I don't usually feel drawn to comment on YouTube, but I couldn't help myself. This song takes everything that is going on and distills it down to the point where all you can ask is "how is this happening?" If you read this Josh, great job. I'll be seeing you next time you're in western Canada.

  49. J.... G....

Thank you for all your beautiful music.

  50. S.... ....

Maybe you could write a song about sending death threats to a 10 year old girl because you don't like her Dad.
    No didn't think so.

    S.... ....

Please don't post such negative and polarizing posts that don't help the conversation and only push people apart.

    S.... ....

Maybe there's a difference between policy and the actions of unhinged people? You honestly think one makes the other ok? Or that they're even comparable?

  51. O.... F....

    Thanks Josh. Lovely song.

  52. S.... B....

Another amazing song! I love it but I hate that you had to write it. We have got to get rid of the scum on the Hill and the Menace in the White House.

  53. D.... S....

    Proud deplorable here!

    D.... S....

Be sure to vote on November 32!

    D.... S....

You have nothing to be proud of.

    D.... S....

And you spelled all the words correctly!!! Good for you

    D.... S....

Being proud of hate filled policies and actions is not a good thing for any country. We've seen hate filled rallies and locking people in cages has been done before and we rose up to fight against the countries doing it. I'm proud of that.

    D.... S....

Please explain what you're proud of? Is it all the lying, the disparaging remarks, the childish name calling, the endless bragging? especially the bragging? trying to take credit for things he had little to nothing to do with, How about the whining? do you enjoy hearing the so called presidents poor poor pitiful me, every body is so mean to me routine? the wedges being driven between us and our allies? Does the fact that a foreign nation had a huge hand in installing a Putin puppet into the WH feel you with pride?. Seriously I really would like to know

  54. M.... R....

I can't imagine what it did to their hearts either? I can't believe our country had a hand in doing that. Keep being a voice for positive change, Josh. We're listening!

  55. r.... ....

Such an amazing and timely song Josh! Was waiting for this after you did it at Red Rocks. Thanks ❤️
