Joni Mitchell - The Reoccurring Dream Lyrics
This is the reoccurring dream
Born in the dreary gap between
What we have now
And what we wish we could have
More fulfilling--and less frustrating!
Look!
Glamorous picture people rise
Radiant!
Gleaming down from screens and pages
Ooh--glamour--before your very eyes!
Isn't it true--isn't it true?
Good question--I know--who cares
Look here they tell you
If you had this
If you had that
If we had that for us mmmmm
Wouldn't it be fabulous
If you had that house, car, bottle, jar
Your lovers would look like movie stars
Movie stars, movie stars, movie stars
Order your youth secrets of the stars
Call now--just $9.99
Our discontent is their delight
They offer relief for the purchase price
Love in a bottle
Love on four wheels
Is that our new car Charles?
Isn't it true--isn't it true?
We guarantee it--pick up your phone and dial
See here they sell you
If you had this
If you had that
I want a new truck!--More power!
If you use this shampoo
True love will come to you
If you had that house, car, bottle, jar
Your lovers would look like movie stars
Movie stars, movie stars, movie stars
Hollywood's greatest legends
Recognize this?
Dreamer
Soft sexy hair
Dream on
He's going to love me in this ruby, ruby lipstick
Others will notice!--Sexy!--Who cares!
Recognize this?
Dreamer
Latest styles and colors
Oh, dream on, dream on, dream on
The fashion looks you've been hoping for
Sexy--sexy
Recognize this?
Dreamer
So special
Dream on
We will have happiness in heaven
The place you dreamed of retiring to--
Who cares
Recognize this?
Dreamer
I know that glamour is--sexy
Oh dream on dreamer
What could go wrong?
Dream on
Who cares!
Recognize this?
Dreamer
I'm afraid I can't go below two million
Dream on
Life would be easy if I had that new appliance
Food processors for all of us
Who cares!
Recognize this?
Dreamer
There are lots of strings
Dream on
We can solve everything in science
Naturally
Science
It's a picture of how to get what you want out of life
Recognize this?
I love it
Dreamer
Isn't there some other way?
Who cares!

Joni Mitchell The Reoccurring Dream Comments
THIS is absolute BRILLIANT writing and arranging, layering, interpretation, style... performance... and WRITING. PERIOD.
Love it. Takes the joke on the superficiality of the western culture! The song sends the message that people who have more want more and it never ends. My two favorite lines where Joni captures the essence of greed include 1. I'm afraid I can't go below $2m, and 2. Is THAT our new car Charles?
Mick, appreciate and agree with your comment....where Joni's lyrics note "is THAT our new car, Charles?" almost as good as "I'm afraid I can't go below $2m" accurately describes how superficial the - acquiring all things material to make you happy - world has become, and that was 30 years ago when this album was released!
Reminds me of Laurie Anderson
Yep! (I thought the same thing.)😉👍
Laurie is not as "heady," though more experimental and avant garde.
Latest styles and colors . . . sooooooo special! This song is what L.A. looked like and still does!
Joni always carries a message within her lyrics and you cannot forget them.
This melody a year ago captured me and like many things I filtered the lyrics out possibly because I was working with detaching from my stuff.
Thanks for this timely share of your fave track of Joni my Angel Warrior. I want to be free of all Stuff not half of it. A matter I have struggled with for some time.
Now I replay to get reinforced to detach myself from the other half of my Stuff I hung on to. Time to Free Myself once and for all of all the things I do not need or want. Yeah. :-)
Consumerism destroys us.
I'm not the dreamer, only the dream.
I agree, so true it hurts. Thanks for the comment.
This song has no peer that I know of. A slow-moving twister, picking up our greedy, vain desires to swirl and rub our noses in them. Too uncomfortable for its time but still waiting for us. My favourite line is the gulping, salivating "Is that our new car, Charles?"
Food processors for all of us!
and this is one of several such songs, with this subject matter, that she's done since the 70s.
What a unique way the lyrics are song. This is fantastic. A very fun little creation for sure. See how it could become a fave'.:-))) Some neat lyrics skillfully blended in a unique experience. Love when a song comes your way that makes you happy and smile. :-)))) The instruments always played so masterfully. A smile is on my face and I will have to dream on this one.:-)))
