Joni Mitchell - Tax Free Lyrics

Front rooms
Back rooms
Slide into tables
Crowd into bathrooms
Joke around
Cheap talk
Deep talk
Talk, talk, talk around the clock
Crawl home
Lie down
Teeth chatter
Heart pounds
I don't feel so good
I don't feel so good
Push a button to escape
Preacher on the tube crying "Lord!"
There's evil in this land
Evangelist:
"Rock and roll music!"
"Cast down these dope-fiends
And there noisy bands!"
"Damn their souls!"
Preacher preaching love like vengeance
Preaching love like hate
Calling for large donations
Promising estates
Rolling lawns and angel bands
Behind the pearly gates
You know, he will have his in this life
But yours will have to wait
He's immaculately tax free
"Mulitiple hundreds of thousands of ..."
Tax free
"Hundreds and millions of dollars"
Tax free
"A hundred billion dollars!
And who is paying the price?
Who, who
"Your children are"
Pissed off
Jacked up
Scream into the mike
Spit into the loving cup
Strut like a rooster
March like a man
God's hired hands and the devil bands
Packing the same grandstands
Different clothes
"Pot in their pockets!"
Different hair
"Sexually active"
Raise a screaming guitar or a bible in the air
Theatre of anguish
Theatre of glory
God's hired hands and the devil bands
Oh come let us adore---ME!
Lord, there's danger in this land
You get witch-hunts and wars
When church and state hold hands
Fuck it!
Tonight I'm going dancing
With the drag queens and the punks
Big beat deliver me
From this sanctimonious skunk
We're no flaming angels
And he's not heaven sent
How can he speak for the Prince of Peace
When he's hawk-right militant
And he's immaculately tax free
"Our nation has lost its guts!"
Save me
"Our nation has lost its strength"
Tax free
"Our nation has whimpered and cried"
Save me
"And petted the Castros"
Tax free
"The Khomeinis' and the Kaddafis'"
Save me
"For so long"
Tax free
"That we don't know how to act like a man"
Save me
"I think that we should turn the United States Marines
loose on that little island south of Florida and
stop that problem!"
"I am preachin' love, I am!"

  1. C.... B....

    Joni is god.

  2. T.... C....

My favorite track on DED. Rod Steiger's rant is so perfect.

  3. L.... M....

The greed and hypocrisy of this congress and this White House, and the religious right is mind-boggling, just as it was in ''86. Indeed 'drag queens and punks' will STILL bring you more honesty on any given day than the cretins who run this land. I perpetually await a rebirth of same... Regardless - Thanks for the upload, Christian, and thanks for the truth, Joni...

  4. J.... ....

Lock them *all* up! And on a similar note...this album is *criminally* underrated!

No wonder why Prince worshiped her...

  7. C.... K....

    Way to go, Joni.
Religions deserve no respect at all.
    Religions are lies.
    All of them.
    This is a fact.
Religions deserve nothing other than relentless, vicious and voracious attack, mockery and ridicule.

    "Fck it!
    Tonight I'm going dancing
With the drag queens and the punks
    Big beat deliver me
From this sanctimonious skunk" love Joni's anger here

  9. R.... M....

"You get witch hunts and wars, when church and state hold hands..."

  10. C.... Q....

Stunning. How did she get Rod Steiger to do the cameo? One of my personal favorite Joni Mitchell lyrics is in this number: "Fuck it! Tonight I'm goin' dancin' with the drag queens and the punks . . ."

    C.... Q....

Ummmm... she asked him to ? Just a guess.

  11. C.... T....

  14. K.... B....

So powerful and never more relevant than now.

  15. s.... t....

The great Michael Landau on guitar!

  16. R.... B....

Believe it or not, the background preacher is actor Rod Steiger.

    R.... B....

And Rod Steiger. brought me here.

  17. D.... Z....

Just like the Trump rallies. Regardless of whose side, after a while, both sides resemble a Mussolini speech.

    D.... Z....

Typical dumb shitlib comment. Your corrupt criminal hag deserved to lose.

  18. J.... H....

Thanks for posting - prescient piece

  19. A.... C....

again says it like it is.........wake up

  20. A.... C....

Damn now this is the  "Gospel"    SAVE ME

  21. R.... T....

A power ballad decrying the "religious" fraud infecting our nation is as relevant as ever.

    R.... T....

Today we have the political elites & the globalist capitalist elites using Cultural Marxism (identity politics, 3rd world migration & bogus ME wars) to maintain their hold on power. Using media, academia and other forms of indoctrination, they keep basic progressives loyal by cunningly employing us vs them rhetoric (women vs men, minorities vs whites, etc)

    R.... T....

Sadly, you're doing EXACTLY what you accuse others of doing. Using a term like "Cultural Marxism" is you both missing the point of Marxism and bastardizing it to create a misguided labeling technique. So, good on you.... for missing the entire point. Passion and zeal and labeling are both routinely used against us. We need less, not more of that.

    R.... T....

    @Austin Caufield well said

    R.... T....

    MORE relevant than ever.

LOVED THIS ALBUM...DONT KNOW WHY IT DIDNT DO WELL....

    y.... ....

--- it is because she was so far ahead, the regular cretins were still listening to the dregs on disco in 1984

    y.... ....

I agree with you. A brilliant album!

    y.... ....

The survivors of the '60s and '70s were trying to keep up with the times, sonically speaking, and maybe that was ill-advised. I love Joni, and Bob, and Neil, and Paul (Beatle Paul, that is), and Stevie, but I can't deny that some of their weakest music came from the '80s. There were some cuts worth searching out, though.
