Joni Mitchell - Pat's Solo Lyrics

This is my solo...
Excuse me Sir...would you please take your seat,
I'm playing my solo... no I'm serious can't you see I'm playing a solo here?...
Hey buddy sit down so I can concentrate on my solo....
Ok that's it, you would think that an artist could play a solo once in a while without any interuptions. Here...you take my guitar and show us what is so important...
What? You work here, you're the usher?
Oooook, sorry, soooo I'll just play my solo then.

Joni Mitchell Pat's Solo Comments
  1. A.... N....

    Play on, Lyle, play on...

  2. T.... A....

    Unbelievable...
13 fucking morons who doubtless can't even play the 3 chords of "Gloria" hit thumbs down on this master class of a performance....

  3. P.... S....

RIP Lyle Mays. He contributed so much to make this concert album the best ever. Too bad the video is cut before finish.

  4. s.... ....

    RIP Lyle.

  5. T.... ....

    0:16...oh yeah...

  6. L.... ....

It is a love letter… Unspeakably beautiful

  7. m.... r....

Revolutionary solo,  sound of a fallen angel and the power of Patì's youth. thank you forever and ever Pat, this solo will live in my heart my whole life, Immenso PAT

  8. J.... Q....

Before it was taken down, there was an alternative, bootleg version of this solo, taken from the NYC concert of the same tour, where (IMO) Pat and the others really pushed the envelope, perhaps because they thought they weren't 'on the record'. I first heard this in 1981, after being a Joni fan for several years beforehand, and this was my first intro to Pat's music; like most non-hipsters, I'd only heard of Jaco via his work on "Hejira" through "Mingus", and I was actually sad that Michael Brecker showed up here instead of Wayne Shorter. Anyway, after this solo by Pat, I ran out and bought "Bright Size Life" and I've been a loyal fan ever since. Sadly, I don't think Joni ever reached the heights of "Shadows and Light" again. I saw her in London, England in 1983, on the "Wild Things Run Fast" tour, but something had gone. Of course, how many others have ever, or will ever attain the creative level Joni reached between "Court and Spark" and "Mingus"? The Swedish Academy likes to honor both artistic movements and nationalities, and I can see the rationale for (say) favoring Alice Munro over Margaret Atwood, or Kazuo Ishiguro over Ian McEwan, but (again IMO), if any of the '60s & '70s singer-song writers deserved the 2016 Literature Prize it should have been split between Joni and Leonard Cohen, or maybe Neil Young. OTH, Pat is, along with Jim Hall or Joe Pass, in his own zone...

    J.... Q....

BTW, the first song writer to receive a literature Nobel would be Rabindranath Tagore (1913).

  9. W.... H....

I saw him live recently. He is the best EVER

  10. C.... F....

Joni, Jaco,...Pat and Lyle super..what a solo !! one of my favourites solo guitar.

  11. j.... z....

    so young

  12. M.... G....

    Crazy ❤️❤️

  13. F.... ....

    whole lineup is filthy insane

  14. N.... N....

listened many times...still it carries a fresh magic of tender love to my ears, wow Pat what a solo...eternal

  15. G.... K....

The way Lyle comes in (1:34) is just magic, beyond compare.

    G.... K....

those first two chords.. man just absolutely GORGEOUS..Travels might be the best album for this stuff, really amazing..' It's for You' from Fandango was my intro otherwise I would have never known jazz could have this kind of feeling. They opened up all kinds of doors

    G.... K....

    Goosebumps absolutely thrilling

  16. d.... ....

Loved this clip; is the bridge pickup on his 175 taped over or is it just missing?

    d.... ....

@dieselyeti Pat removed it since he prefers just the neck pickup.

    d.... ....

Used to, though. From what I can tell, he uses the bridge pickup on his Roland G-303 when doing guitar and synth tones, and some of his signature models have been made in double-pickup varieties that he uses as well...

  17. B.... U....

Metheny is an insane virtuoso.  The best concert I ever saw......

  18. J.... M....

i could have done without the prolonged shot of joni's ass. eek...

    J.... M....

And here I was was quietly *enjoying* said prolonged shot of Joni's ass, which is every bit as enjoyable as the rest of her person and her art and her spirit.

  19. k.... ....

    this is dreamy

  20. L.... a....

so great to see a young meth n mays rockin this gig together and bringing their intuitive communication skills to joni's art! it's a beautiful thing to see friends succeed together!

  21. g.... ....

His guitar tone, phrasing, chiming "chorus" chords.....so unique, so recognizable!

  22. t.... ....

Thanks for nothing. I will now lop off all my fingers.

    t.... ....

I was thinking the same while listening to his phrasing ))))

  23. K.... C....

This is just screaming for a "Pat Metheny Shreds"...

  24. M.... D....

    Yes, it's Michael Brecker (r.i.p.)

  25. M.... ....

Damn! Beautiful except for cutting off the last note and the applause.

  26. p.... s....

@RipplingOphelia If you get a chance check out the soprano sax solo on Hejira on the shadows and light album (it's not in the film ) it's the real deal by one of the Breckers I think.

  27. r.... ....

one of the most sublime guitar solos.....ever.

  28. R.... ....

Why is Kenny G's name even mentioned in the same sentence as Pat's?

  29. d.... ....

    kenny g is a golfer

  30. D.... H....

Lyle used to come over to my house and play with my husband. Those were the days! Aspiring musicians and their passions. Pat's playing is celestial!

  31. D.... M....

Nice to see a very youthful Metheny playing his heart out. . . . he's such a kid here. . . but of course the playing is always there. . heartfelt, pretty, and then Lyle comes in making even the Oberheim patches sound good. . .and well. . a real treat!! This was quite a gathering a genius. . with of course Joni being the total surprise. .

  32. d.... ....

    awesome solo.

  33. p.... ....

    MY DREAM BAND

  34. 1.... ....

    @mbschan Kenny G plays Kenny G...all he's ever played...

  35. m.... d....

    Beautiful....

  36. m.... ....

Metheny is in a class all to himself.....as for Kenny G, I don't know what he's playing but it certainly isn't Jazz.

  37. s.... ....

@picchaz You idiot. The only thing related to ASS is you!. In fact, you aren't fit to wipe joni's ass, loser.

  38. f.... ....

@jofartknocker Okay go blues guy; thanks for sharing.

  39. A.... ....

@jofartknocker check out Pat Metheny's trio records if you haven't already. they are harder edged

  40. J.... O....

Im pretty sure this sounds good to some people and i respect that but to my this sounds like crap but haha im a blues man sorry guys

    J.... O....

you are such a looser justin

  41. J.... S....

Wow, Lyle's Oberheim backing in 2:03~2:18 is same as 'September 15th(Dedicated to Bill Evans)', From Pat & Lyle's duo album 'As Falls Wichita, So falls Wichita Falls'.

  42. D.... M....

Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  43. J.... a....

I've always loved that- is any of that (Pat and Lyle's segment) on any of Pat's early albums? I've heard parts of songs on some of his albums that sound similiar. If not, I think this concert might be on CD.

  44. m.... ....

I don't know what it is about his music but he has such expression when he plays. I haven't hear his latest release but he is willing to take chances. He made me a fan of Jazz.... unlike Kenny G who almost turned me off to Jazz.

  45. t.... ....

@bbagginz you are right on about Metheny!

  46. f.... ....

@fraterlucifer888 Smooth jazz isn't THAT bad. In fact, (Pat Metheny might hate me for this) but Pat has composed some songs that could be nearing the smooth jazz genre.

  47. b.... ....

    @brainsparkles

Its actually moving from "Amelia" into this solo (check out the "Amelia" video from this same set, it ends with the transition into this performance).

  48. v.... ....

    Wow how breathtakingly beautiful!
Pat's phrasing in this solo sounds as if it's coming out of the American Garage recording sessions....I wonder if he recorded that album shortly after this video....

  49. G.... C....

pat metheny and lyle mays are the reason I love THE RAMONES and THE SEX PISTOLS SOOOOOO MUCH,smooth jazz is not jazz, its nauseating,,,just to be kind Metheny did play on one of my favorite albums with Jim Hall(just two guitars no cheeseball keyboard pad sounds)I know probly gonna get some haters for this , but smooth jazz should only be played in dentist office to enhance the potentcy of the novacaine

  50. G.... B....

You are one lucky SOB... What a great night that must have been!

  51. T.... ....

    What a magical night.

  52. E.... S....

    Fluor66:

Methane doesn't have a smell. It's the sulfur compounds in gas that make it smell.

  53. C.... H....

@tripleps07 I wholeheartedly agree my friend!

  54. t.... ....

I concur that that was the BEST live band Joni ever had the privilege of playing with, especially now that Brecker and Pastorius have passed. I remember going to the P.N.E. in Vancouver BC in 1980 and paying 10 bucks to see Alias, Brecker, Metheny, Mitchell, Mays, Pastorius and the Persuasions....a very memorable 3 hr. concert !!!

  55. f.... ....

    More like all year

  56. f.... ....

    OB8 maybe?

  57. S.... C....

And let me guess, you're the spokesperson for the morons who rail against things they can even fathom let alone come close to emulating and don't know their asses from holes in the ground let alone brilliant guitar playing when they see it?

  58. E.... V....

actually thats the funniest comment i've heard in a long while. I love pat metheny's playing, but also his euphoria is pretty noticeable.

  59. m.... ....

I could listen to Pat & Lyle all day

  60. G.... ....

Whatever turns your crank Pat! LOL

  61. D.... K....

    is this emo?

  62. B.... M....

Nice solo Pat ... nice ass Joni ... both good.

  63. b.... ....

watch?v=N6d2RG2Rl64 there's Amelia, which led into this solo

  64. f.... ....

Oneheart75...you don't know where he's coming from? Well that's obvious.

  65. H.... G....

This is a weird performance--starts with Joni's song "Amelia" and turns into one of Pat's songs, the name of which I can't remember. Would have preferred to hear "Amelia".

  66. D.... D....

    Pat Metheny gitaristo virtuoso!!!

  67. m.... b....

The other guitar player's tone is a bit crunchy. don't like it.

  68. B.... C....

Sublime, beautiful. Plays his heart out...

  69. D.... D....

    Pat Metheny solo relax...

  70. J.... H....

then what;s the hole near the bottom horn?

  71. M.... ....

No switch dude. Only a neck pick up. I thought the tape was covering the bridge pick up spot, but pay attention on the volume and trebble pots. there are only 2 instead of 4 on a usual ES 175. No pick guard either. But you are right an ES 175 has usually the selector on the upper part (I have one:))

  72. M.... ....

Metheny thinks all his notes. Especially during this period, i am sure the solo was prepared. too perfect to be a one shot fully improvised piece.
It is nevertheless an incredible solo from my favorite guitar player. To me the best ever full stop.

  73. D.... T....

Ehh Joni.. problems choosing the right clothes?

  74. k.... ....

What a amazing melody of guiter.
    I love Pat Metheny.......

  75. L.... D....

Pat Metheny is fantastic. But I like the sound of Joni Mitchell's guitar here. Does anyone know how to get this sound on the guitar?

  76. F.... C....

Look His face...Half of him is making love with the guitar, the other half is fighting with her...

  77. D.... D....

Pat solo +1000 by Daivis Dvareckas
    guitaristtttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt jazz

  78. H.... ....

This looks like the Mingus tour -- gosh it's been a long time. I saw her on this tour in Philadelphia at the Mann. Jaco and Michael Brecker were also on board. I think this was the end of her peak musically. Just my opinion, o'course.

  79. b.... c....

wow, this is the frst time i really heard this guy's playing. what are some good albums by him?

  80. J.... H....

are you sure? i've never seen an ES-175 with the selector switch on the lower horn (you can see the hole left by the removal).

  81. n.... ....

    What year is this?

  82. P.... ....

No words to express how this makes me feel. Been a fan of Joni's since Woodstock and Pat's since "Missouri Sky". OMG.

  83. M.... R....

    O Principe dos Reis!

  84. M.... ....

Correct ES 175. Strings 11-49. Note the missing bridge pick up covered with Panzer band?. Anyway great sound, two delays 13ms and 26 ms if i can recall well. Nevertheless the fingers of Mr Metheny are making the sound not the guitar!

  85. P.... ....

    Creazy little thing called Metheny!

  86. C.... T....

once upon a time pat metheny was a little boy.

  87. D.... D....

Petras metinis gerai groja ir dar jaunas!!!!!!

  88. M.... ....

they are planet waves with his name on them. the thickness is curiously not written. I play 1,14, i would say it is close to 0,50, very thin indeed. He bends it and uses the in fact the round side of the pick. very effective when you master the angle to get a warm deep sound. I got this from one of his concert in Burlington. happy to share, for me, he is the greatest

  89. D.... F....

sorry, i have no idea. i just know he uses 3 fingers to hold the pick and bends it when he wants harder attack.

  90. L.... C....

I always see him with these red pics. any idea what they are?

  91. e.... ....

    LOL at madxx's response.

  92. v.... ....

I'd say start with his first album; Bright Size Life under ECM. With Moses (drums) and Pastorius (Bass).
    Enjoy!

  93. v.... ....

    The fickly notes never stumble.
    Pure genius.
    A guitar god.

  94. K.... ....

LOL, I thought that was Mike Stern at first :D

  95. D.... F....

he uses really thin picks. for harder articulations he bends the pick. uses thumb, index and possibly middle i believe.

  96. P.... ....

yes that really pat when was young

  97. G.... S....

    MERAVIGLIOSO!!!!

  98. S.... M....

    The master of musical wallpaper.

  99. L.... B....

THIS is 3 minutes of magic!
what he does here is amazing...
