Jones, George - Where Grass Won't Grow Lyrics

The dirt was clay an' was the color of the blood in me.
A twelve acre farm on a ridge in south Tennessee.
We left our sweat all over that land,
Behind a mule we watched grow old,
Row after row.
Trying to grow corn an' cotton on ground so poor that grass won't grow.

There was one old store in the holler we all called town.
It belonged to a gentle old man named Henry Brown.
He gave us grits and in the winter time,
So we could live through the cold,
When the winds brought snow.
Trying to grow corn an' cotton on ground so poor that grass won't grow.

The one I loved walked through those fields with me.
A hard workin' woman, true as one could be.
But then one year, death was goin' round,
And swiftly took it's toll.
Janie had to go.
Now she lies asleep under ground so poor that grass won't grow.

As I stand here looking over this part of Tennessee,
The fields are bare as far as the eye can see.
And over the ground where Janie lies,
There's a beautiful sight to behold,
And no one knows,
Why there's flowers growin' on ground so poor that grass won't grow...

    Great Song! I also listened to Good Year for the Roses. I can't say I listen to Country a lot. But this is pure music, no genre attached. Just beautifully done.

    Yes, that's another favorite of mine (a rocker who has only made a couple country videos) and I'm working on a video for it. Thanks for the nice words and for watching.

    George Jones had me addicted to Country music from the first time I heard "He Stopped Loving Her Today at age 10. This collaborative album was finest work. Check out "A Good Year for the Roses" that he did with Alan Jackson. And when Alan stuck it to the CMA's for George the next year. He actually autographed a copy of "Who's gonna Gill Their Shoes" for me DURING his performance in Fayetteville, NC...what a thrill! Rest in Peace, Possum.

    I know all these faces, and all these places. I knew them all as friends, and family. They were yours, and they were mine. Gone now but for my memory, and images burned into indelible film. We can't stand today, or dare to stare into tomorrow, without acknowledging the hardships of those that had to survive, so we could live.             Thank You, and God Bless you, for posting this deeply moving video, Will

    I prefer George Jones' original take of this song that was in 1969. I mean the singing is terrible when it wasn't ol' George singing. Here is the link to the original version:

    @AstralBlueDreams777
    Thanks so much my friends for liking this one. It might be considered by some to be on the sappy side, but you know, it speaks such truth. I've always been drawn to stories about the true hardships our ancestors faced as they tried to provide for their families...sometimes under incredibly harsh circumstances.

    I love so much of the older country music & connect much of it to happy times with my parents.

    100% re: EmmyLou! Wow. I would love to make a vid for one of hers.

  59. M.... ....

    @cattledog1229
    Thanks so much, Jana. I would love to see that program, I'll watch for it..& did not know he had a hair salon in his house?!?! I do think he is truly one of a kind......probably tied with Lennon and Morrison as my favorite singer....just an incredibly pure and emotive voice...he could sing the phone book and it would sound beautiful.

    I'm glad you liked the effort. So many beautiful & kind people experienced such hard times and made it through with courage and love.

    Peace!
