Jones, George - Maybellene Lyrics

Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin'
The things you used to do

As I was motivatin' over the hill
I saw Maybellene in a Coupe DeVille
Cadillac rollin' on an open road
But nothin' outrun my V8 Ford
Cadillac doin' about ninety-five
Bumper to bumper, rollin' side to side

Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin'
The things you used to do

Well, the Cadillac pulled up ahead of the Ford
The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more
It done got cloudy and started to rain
I tooted my horn for the passing lane
The rainwater poured up under my motor hood
I knew that wern't doin' my motor good

Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin'
The things you used to do

Well now, the heat went down
And the motor cooled down
And that's when I heard that highway sound
Cadillac lookin' like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten, a half a mile ahead
Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill

Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin'
The things you used to do

Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true
You've started back doin'
The things you used to do

Right on Tiff, that's your dad and my friend, I got to work with Phil a lot, even he and I went with Ray Price in 1970, what a guy and what a picker.   Dale Bennett

@bumptiosly, I just listened to Nugents cover. As much as I love uncle Ted, that sucked. I would love to see what he could do with "house of the rising sun" though. Pantera would probably done the best, but unfortunately dimebag isn't really up to cutting new tracks.

What a can of worms I opened!
    A thousand pardons.
    Both guitarists were/are brilliant.

Just to clear all this up, that is Phil Baugh picking on this song, NOT JERRY. I'm Phil's daughter. My uncle Vern Stovall played with my dad 20+ years and can also recognize his pickin' anywhere and my mother also said it was my dad (she was married to him when this was recorded). I've also found credits online showing my dad was in fact the guitar player on this song.
@musiccalgary, Never EVER question a family member if they verify who's pickin'. It's in my blood. I feel it, I know it!!!

@musiccalgary What is your source that it was Jerry and not Phil?

  8. t.... ....

    @musiccalgary Phil Baugh

  9. t.... ....

@brookdalebill Phil Baugh was pickin' on this song. He played on a lot of Paycheck and Jones' albums.

  10. t.... ....

@doctorfingersii Yes, Phil Baugh was the picker on this song. I can recognize my dad's pickin' anywhere. Plus, my uncle Vern Stovall confirmed it.

  11. G.... B....

@brookdalebill It was Phil Baugh. He also played on the "He Stopped Loving Her Today Album" He was a Nashville Superpicker too!

  12. t.... ....

I've looked for this on here for a while!! That's my dad pickin' the guitar on this song. I didn't even know about this record until my uncle told me about it.

  13. b.... ....

    @musiccalgary
    Jerry Reid, I think.

  14. b.... ....

I think the guitar player is Jerry Reid.
    Not the late Jerry Reed.
I think he was/is Mel Tillis's lead player in the Statesiders.
    Great playing!

Uhhh, i dont think these ever had an "after party"...the party never stopped....hehehe

Unusual song choice by two of the best. That's some kinda crazy guitar pickin too. I bet that was a fun recording session. And the after party... forget about it!
