Johnny Winter - Raised On Rock Lyrics

I remember as a child I used to hear
Music that they played with a feel
Some call it folk, some call it soul
People, let me tell you it was rock and roll

I was raised on rock, got that rhythm in my soul
Every day when I get home I turn on my radio

And listen to the music that my idols made
I knew every single record the DJ's played
The 'Honky Tonk', 'Hound Dog', 'Johnny B. Goode'
'The Chain Gang', 'Love Is Strange', 'Knock On Wood'

I was raised on rock, got that rhythm in my soul
I was born to love the beat of that thing called rock and roll, yeah

They thought it was a fad, thought that it would pass
But the younger generation they knew it would last
Time gone by, the beat goes on
And every time I hear it, it takes me home

I was raised on rock, got that rhythm in my soul
Every day when I get home I turn on my radio

Mama played recordings of Beethoven's Fifth
Moonlight Sonata down the classical Liszt
Daddy loved to listen to his country songs
I was in the back room diggin' the Stones

I was raised on rock, got that rhythm in my soul
I was born to love the beat of that thing called rock and roll
I was raised on rock, got that rhythm in my soul
Every day when I get home I turn on my radio, radio

Yeeeaaaaahhh! F-ing Johnny, the man was awesome. All I ever wanted to do as a kid was get a guitar and become Johnny Winter. Got the guitars but never had that kind of talent in my fingers or more importantly in my soul. RIP Johnny, you will always be the man and always loved.

De gitaarsolo is misschien zijn beste ooit, maar ja voor mijn gevoel  de beste solo ooit. De hele plaat draai ik sowieso grijs. Klasse!!!

Originally recorded and released as a single by Elvis Presley: I think this Johnny Winter version is great. Rocks excellently. But, even this proves why Elvis Presley was Elvis and no one else was or ever will be. Winter plays it straight -- blistering rock guitar, standard fiery rock vocal. But Elvis, he seduces you with his voice. The drums on Elvis' version are thunderous. I like both versions. But that special magic is instilled in Elvis' recording. I like that Johnny Winter found this Mark James song interesting enough to cover. As far each song's fire is concerned: let's face it Johnny Winter was known for his lead guitar & succeeds here. Elvis was famous for his voice and Johnny wouldn't challenge Elvis in that area. This is the defining difference and both artists work their respective side of the sidewalk successfully.

No disrespect meant but ... JDW's version is pure balls out rock.
JDW III has 3 of the badass tracks I've ever heard - in 50+ years of listening to music. Raised on Rock, Self Destructive Blues, & Rock & Roll People. And Stranger one of the most beautiful ballads too.

    @JustAintThatWay for sure.

So fucking good! It's unbelievable that this song (with its out of this world guitar) should only be available on compilations.

A lost anthem if ever there was one.

    t.... ....

It's on John Dawson Winter III

    RIP Johnny.

I wore some deep grooves in this album back in the day.  Been a fan of Johnny since day one.  I've seen him live many times, in big halls and small, intimate clubs and he always made it look so damn easy.  His eyes half-closed and that little smile on his face that said he was doing what he loved.
Thanks, man, you are so missed.  RIP, Johnny.

  19. E.... ....

Forever master of the masters(with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix).
thanks God for having Johnny among us.
    RIP.

johnny was and is not interested in being a commercial success- he has a big following and plays what he likes- i have seen him a number of times...he is as smooth as they come- looks like he isn't even trying- was into this one back in the 70's and it still rocks-

    g.... ....

"Raised On Rock" would've been his breakthrough hit had he allowed Gene Simmons to sing lead on the song. Gene was invited to play bass on the song but declined the offer for whatever reason. When they first came out KISS was billed as an opening act for Johnny Winter but then a year or so later Johnny was opening for KISS. Too bad KISS never covered this. It would be interesting to see what it sounded like with Gene singing the lyrics. Johnny's version of Elvis's song kicks ass no matter who's singing on it.

    g.... ....

@bucky468  personally not a kiss fan, but obviously they were commercial rock and you are correct in that gene singing vocals would have "sold" the song-

    g.... ....

@gumbyonacid Still, "John Dawson Winter III" was an instant Top 100 album (just missed the Top 70) that went gold. Johnny had a lot of albums that hit the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, and quite a few of them reached the Top 100. He may have not wanted to be a commercial success but he actually did sell albums just like his brother did throughout the 70's.

  21. M.... ....

Elvis' RAISED ON ROCK brought me here. I like both versions, but this is much more hard rock compared to Elvis'.

  22. t.... ....

I don't know a single person who has even heard of this song.
Personally, I discovered by accident on a cheap, shitty compilation CD back in the 90's.

And it seems you can only find it on those cheap, shitty compilation albums.

    WHY???

This should be a staple of FM Rock, just as much as Stairway, Hotel California and all the rest!

  23. b.... ....

Sounds like the lost KISS track. The singer sounds somewhat like Gene Simmons. Very good slice of classic hard rock here. Very Robin Trower.

    b.... ....

listen to your history to find out where the previous gen got there stuff from -
kiss were still in short pants when jw set the guitar world on fire. RIP Johnny

  24. m.... g....

My word what a guitar solo..he is so great..very underrated just like Buck Dharma and Randy California

  25. T.... M....

How about some live video , , John Dawson just rocks it here

  26. M.... ....

    pretty f'n good

  27. s.... d....

there is some kind of an element of mystique to this album. almost like a haunting feeling buried deep within the layers of the songs.

  28. L.... ....

Got the rythm in my soul....

  29. r.... m....

@FLR58 Yes, another great song.I think that Johnny dawson winterIII is simply the best studio album of Johnny.....

  30. r.... m....

dirty, wild version of the song!what a energy"

  31. F.... ....

He's the best there is. I get some Motown-vibes out of this tune. So fucking good.

  32. J.... T....

This is a song that Winter was doing in 73actually Elvis was doing it back in the 60's so only JW and HIs band knows how long He was playing it out live on the tours He was doing back in those days . It sure sounds like Freebird type ending .

  33. 1.... ....

I don't think Lynyrd Skynyrd ripped off JW, they released Freebird in 1973. Raised on Rock was released on JW's 1974 album John Dawson Winter III.

  34. J.... F....

    You got that right!
Cheap tequila has a very neat solo as well, but it's too short.
"Stranger" IS very awesome song with lots of solos. No strangers blues but only Stranger from the John Dawson 4th winter 3d.

  35. f.... ....

hehe, this song is the BOMB!

  36. J.... B....

I've noticed that Skynyrd's guitarists def use a lot of Johnny's riffs. SRV sounds the most like him though. Still, JW got a lot of his stuff from others too.

  37. J.... T....

This song is freebird , we'll the ending is ! Skynrd ripped it off from winter it's as plain as day ! Listen to the outtro ! Ha !

  38. J.... F....

The guitar solo in this song is sick. Starts at 02:43, 2 minutes and 5 seconds long!

    J.... F....

He never ran out of riffs. Played them forward and backwards and every way in between.

  39. F.... ....

Thats a great photo collection thanks! Lee.

  40. M.... c....

Great slideshow and song! Thanks for posting!
