Johnny Rivers - Sidewalk Song (27Th Street) Lyrics

Forty-seven cracks in the sidewalk that leads
From my house to yours
How do I know
I count them everyday
While following you
From my house to yours

And though you don't know
I'm with you all the way
Wishing I could say
Stop! I love you, darlin' won't you stay

But I always hang my head
And count all the cracks in the sidewalk
Instead.

Seventeen streetlights stand in between
My house and yours
How do I know
I count them every night
While tracing my steps
From my house to yours

To the golden glow
Of your window light
Wish somehow you knew
How long I've been in love with you
And wishin' I were dead

I count all the cracks in the sidewalk
On my way home
To bed.

Read the comments & tried to find the meaning that freaked people out. Ok it is 2015 as I write this & U guys see a peeping Tom? I see a YOUNG man walking past a YOUNG. Girls house whom he has not the nerve to tell his feelings. He wrote this in a more innocent time . We need to remember that & try to get some of it back.

I'm sure Mr. Webb never envisioned the way his lyrics would be interpreted in the 21st century.  We've sure come a long way....

  6. B.... M....

just another in a long line of great tunes written by Jimmy Webb and performed by a terrific performer.

I was fortunate to see JR and Jimmy together are a live concert earlier this year. They are both great.

I'm glad that you got this info. There was an article in the LA Times about Jimmy Webb Saturday. I will try to send it to you, B.

  10. m.... ....

Well, Jimmy was TALKING about his feelings about Susan Ronstadt...yes Linda's cousin. This is the Susan that he is referring to in many of his late sixties songs ("Where's The Playground, Suzie")

  11. c.... ....

I'd like to know what Jimmy Webb was thinking when he wrote this.

  12. I.... M....

I had Rewind and always liked this song. Listening to it now, though, it's a pretty creepy lyric. That poor girl...

  13. c.... ....

You're welcome, Rebecca. I'm glad that you found it.

Yes, it sounds like he was obsessed with someone, but never made an actual connection.
