This song was written by Steve Barri and Phil Sloan at the request of Screen Gems Producer Lou Adler. When Johnny Rivers was signed to perform the title song to a British TV show called "Danger Man" that was being brought to America as a summer replacement, the James Bond craze had just started -- so the name was changed to "Secret Agent Man." For the TV show, they wrote just one verse and the chorus. But after the show became a hit, Rivers started getting requests to perform it during his live shows, but couldn't because the song was incomplete. So Adler turned to Barry and Sloan and asked them to write a full song, which they did. When they went into the studio to record, Hal Blaine came up with all those thundering tom tom fills and cymbal crashes. As an afterthought, Adler asked everyone in the building to come into the studio to clap and yell to simulate a live recording at the Whiskey a Go Go.

if anyone interested you can find most of the TV series on You Tube - just search the term "Danger Man" for the Brit version - not sure the US version is there as haven't checked for it - used to watch it during it's original run in the 60's while working at the US Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand
