Johnny Mathis - Wild Is The Wind Lyrics

Love me, love me; say you do.
Let me fly away with you.
For my love is like the wind
And wild is the wind.
Give me more than one caress;
Satisfy this hungriness.
Let the wind blow through your heart,
For wild is the wind.

You touch me;
I hear the sound of mandolins.
You kiss me,
And, with the kiss, the world begins.
You're spring to me, all things to me;
You're life itself!
Like a leaf clings to a tree,
Oh my darling, cling to me,
For we're creatures of the wind,
And wild is the wind, the wind.
Wild is my love for you.

You touch me;
I hear the sound of mandolins.
You kiss me,
And, with the kiss, the world begins.
You're spring to me, all things to me;
You're life itself!
Like a leaf clings to a tree,
Oh my darling, cling to me,
For we're creatures of the wind,
And wild is the wind, the wind.
Wild is my love for you.

Johnny Mathis Wild Is The Wind Comments
  1. R.... A....

Love love love say you do! Bowie! Forever! happy Birthday 2020

  2. R.... R....

I love the lyrics it's touching to the core of my existence,, love conquers fears,, strong and wild as the wind

  3. C.... M....

    Pure schlager.

  4. O.... v....

This version is alright, but it cannot touch the fragile tenderness and desperation in the voice of Nina Simone. I like her version better.

  5. G.... K....

Google is pure Evil. This pure Goodness.

  6. E.... S....

The ONLY good thing about new movie "The Widows" ....this song begins the story.....so I went looking for it here. Thank you YouTube. I just listened to David Bowie and Nina Simone 's performances of this song, and remembered where I heard it first.....from Johnny Mathis, when I was in my early teens...it made me realize that love is no joke - take it seriously when it finds you.

  7. P.... J....

Johnny may have had the best chorus in the background, ever.

  8. m.... M....

Closing your eyes and listen to this, suddenly you will see the panoramic view of the whole blue earth from the outer space, isolated in the eternal nothingness. Such is the mysterious audio-visual effect of this one of the most beautiful piece by Dimitri Tiomkin/Johny Mathis. You will never come across this level of music any longer in the 21st century earth. Thanks for uploading this, as I did not know it featured a film staring Anna Magnani.

  9. J.... Z....

    A great great ....song...under appreciated.
by far johnnys finest recording ever!

  10. N.... D....

I've seen Johnny Mathis in concert twice and believe me he is just as good in person as he sounds on these records - he is a genius and didn't need any electronic help to reach the high notes or sustain them like he does.

  11. T.... B....

One of the best songs that I've ever heard. 144 seconds of top talent. Amazing!!!!

  12. c.... ....

This song owns itself! Any great singer can sing it because of the sheer brilliance of the hauntingly beautiful melody and achingly profound words. Mathis, Simone, Bowie, George Michael; all are elevated to the top of their game simply by paying homage to this timeless masterpiece. The song owns itself!

  13. C.... M....

Love me, love me, say you do...let me fly away with you. The aching heart, the object of desire. Holy ****!

  14. C.... d....

Beautiful recording. And 3 great nominees for Best Song that year: Tammy, All the Way, and Wild Is the Wind. Very close call, but Frank probably sold the song in the movie. Also it played a major role in the movie, unlike the other 2, though Debbie does sing Tammy.

  15. m.... M....

With the passing of Scott Walker I can hear him give this song flight also.nice version by Johnny..!!!!!

  16. T.... ....

everyone plz go check out my a capella cover i did of this song and tell me what you think plz.:)

  17. M.... R....

A mi juicio es la mejor versión de está canción es demasiado bella la voz😘😘😘😘

  18. A.... W....

David Bowie took this great song next level. Legend

  19. R.... H....

how many kids were conceived with this song...one for sure.

  20. M.... M....

Loved this song for so many years. Listen to that harmonica, very rare till we found Stevie Wonder.. the classical playing and the bass all of it and Johnny..

  21. H.... S....

    Sigh..................

  22. B.... S....

Great version - Nina took it a step further with a live recording - still amazing singing from Mathis

  23. B.... F....

    Nina's is far better....

  24. T.... P....

    I prefer Nina Simone’s version.

  25. n.... ....

Sorry. David Bowie's version is the best.

  26. l.... J....

Two American singers give each other unparalleled performance to no other singer alive in comparison ...Mr. Johnny Mathis and the extraordinary Barbara Streisand.

  27. K.... J....

    Love this could listen endlessly

  28. t.... ....

If Johnny had not infused this song with his magic, the others would not have covered it.

  29. S.... G....

I've been singing this song on a constant loop since the wild winds blew through the east coast recently.
Nor'easter? You'd better believe it! Wild was that wind! WHEW!!!

  30. M.... W....

I wonder of voices are even capable of doing this anymore?
Pure beauty seems to be gone from music.

  31. J.... Z....

johnnys greatest recording by far...and one of all times greatest recordings

  32. N.... D....

My mother used to put on all of her Johnny Mathis albums when she was ironing - Oh how I miss her and miss hearing these songs on their hi fi record player.

  33. V.... J....

l was a talent. agent for years and met alot of very gifted musicians.l l did not find any who can sing as good as Johnny Mathis. l do love Boz scaggs , Michael McDonald, Englebert, Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash, Glenn Campbell from that time period. l think Sinatra is overrated but my Dad absolutely loved him ! l am not much for Tom Jones except for his hit it's not unusual...l would love to hear Johnny sing that song.

  34. M.... R....

I love this Music, forever, Is The Better. Johnny thanks for interpretation.

  35. D.... M....

Great Song, but Bowie's version is better.

  36. M.... R....

Que hermosa canción y la voz aún más está es lejos la versión más bella 😍

  37. M.... j....

"NOONE" sings this particular song, better than Johnny Mathis! "NOBODY"!!💖💖💖💖💖💖

  38. d.... o....

    so beautiful

  39. h.... ....

George Michaels is the BEST :-) R.I.P.

  40. J.... B....

Give Mary Fahl's version a try. Won't be disappointed.

  41. A.... T....

This is such a beautiful song and every artist that I heard sing it bring their special interpretation to it. Shirley Horn also does a beautiful rendition.

  42. D.... W....

his incredible voice is wonderful on this great tune...how could it be any better?

  43. R.... B....

Other greats have sung it but NONE can come close to the great Johnny Mathis! Ray Ellis at his best on arrangements!

  44. S.... P....

Great to be danced face to face with the loved one.

  45. W.... ....

Johnny's version--produced by the great Ray Ellis--- is THE finest version of them all. --------WolfSky9

  46. Z.... b....

Gostos a parte. Eu prefiro o clássico com Mathis: arranjo magistral, Mathis com sua voz afinadissima e agudos poderosíssimos. Celestial!

  47. b.... s....

Now that is a Love Song!  I think this is my favorite Johnny Mathis song. With A Time For Us a close second. Thanks.

  48. s.... p....

    Very beautiful love song..........

  49. S.... M....

I prefer Bowie, he sounds like a gipsy....

  50. E.... A....

" Salvaje es el viento "

    Ámame, ámame, ámame
    Di que haces
    Déjame volar contigo
Porque mi amor es como el viento
    Y salvaje es el viento
    Salvaje es el viento.

    Dame más de una caricia
    Para satisfacer este ansiedad
Deja que el viento sople a través de tu corazón
Porque salvaje es el viento, salvaje es el viento.

    [CORO]

    Me tocaste,
Oigo el sonido de las mandolinas
    Me besas
Con tu beso comienza mi vida
    Eres primavera para mi
    Eres todo para mí
    No lo sabes?
    Tú eres la vida misma.

Como la hoja se aferra al árbol,
Oh, querida mía, aferrada a mí
Porque somos como criaturas del viento,
    Y salvaje es el viento
    Salvaje es el viento.

    [CORO]

    Me tocaste,
Oigo el sonido de las mandolinas
    Me besas
Con tu beso comienza mi vida
    Eres primavera para mi
    Eres todo para mí
    No lo sabes?
    Tú eres la vida misma.

Como la hoja se aferra al árbol,
Oh, querida mía, aferrada a mí
Porque somos como criaturas en el viento,
    Y salvaje es el viento
    Salvaje es el viento.

  51. T.... L....

Don't miss giving a listen to Billy Mackenzie's (of the Associates fame) version.

  52. S.... M....

The real wind is wearing my nerves very thin. The music helps some to soothe them.

  53. M.... M....

    For me, every movie
    theme song Johnny
Mathis sung was greater than the film
itself. (thanks for giving the song writing credits in the
    description; I wish every
    channel was this
    considerate and atten
tive to important details. The poor song writers who are
    the God-inspired founts that make
    all this possible are
    so often overlooked.)

  54. F.... ....

I think this is the best version of the song! Johnny Mathis is great!

  55. Y.... S....

    Amor.....

  56. F.... M....

I made love to many girls with that song

  57. C.... C....

    My SONG!

  58. C.... L....

    Bowie rules this song...

    C.... L....

    totally!

    C.... L....

Math is forever Bowie never!... he's not even in the same class as Johnny Mathis!

    C.... L....

If you mean as a singer, I guess that is a matter of taste. If you mean as an artist, it is just ridiculous. Like saying Andrew Lloyd Webber is not in the same class as Beethoven.

    C.... L....

jjs490 Oh per-lease. Love Johnny's version, but Mr Jones definitely has the drama and passion in his version that can't be touched.

  59. R.... W....

    What a voice!

  60. S.... R....

One of the most hauntingly, beautiful songs ever recorded.

    S.... R....

He's wonderful, but I just listened to Nina Simone's rendition and wanted to go back to Nina's -- hers has a more haunting feeling

    S.... R....

@Saffron's World I looked it up just now. This is a gag, right?

    S.... R....

@oj shilinski Nina 's is earthy, but John's is so very romantic and smooth!

    S.... R....

@Jessica Stanley - guess I was feeling more earthy than romantic - I've always both singers - thanks for the feedback. . . .

    S.... R....

Sandra, you have one of the most hauntingly "," terrible uses of a comma ever typed on YouTube.

  61. J.... J....

Only Johnny....and David. What a Gorgeous Song!

  62. D.... O....

bad version, not his genre. Like J. Mathis singing suffergette city.

  63. h.... C....

I heard Jonny sing this live in concert in the spring of 2015. Near age 90 he still has his amazing gift. And this song, Wild is the Wind, was done perfectly, I'd say nearly 60 years after this remarkable recording.

    h.... C....

Johnny turned 80 this year...lol...don't age this wonderful artist--we want him around for at least another decade or two!

  64. l.... ....

    I prefer Randy Crawford's rendition.

  65. R.... M....

I have never heard so many singers destroy this beautiful song, and I have listened to many big names on YouTube, this song belongs to the great Johnny Mathis he sings it beautifully, a joy to listen to when he is singing.

    R.... M....

Raina Mace I like his version but Nina sings it best

    R.... M....

I still have the 78 single I totally agree with you

    R.... M....

The Bowie version *sucks.* He wasn't fit to lick the soles of the shoes of Mathis and Simone.

    R.... M....

The Bowie version *sucks.* As a singer, he wasn't fit to lick the soles of the shoes of Mathis and Simone.

    R.... M....

I like both Mr Mathis and Mr Bowie's renditions, I don't like Ms Simone's version. My favorite is George Michael's.

  66. f.... ....

I always knew that Bowie's version was a cover, though I didn't realize it went back this far. I think it was cahnged pretty radically though--lyrics and music. This doesn't sound much at all like the version on Station To Station.

  67. K.... O....

    Such a great movie.

  68. k.... ....

"Perception is reality", so I've been told. I'd only ever known this song as sung by Johnny Mathis and later, Nina Simone. As for David Bowie, I didn't have a clue. Hearing his version, I'm totally unimpressed and even more amazed that some actually favor it. Different strokes for different folks as they say.

    k.... ....

kweju3 David Bowie rules this tune. But having said that it's my least favourite tune on "Station To Station" (that's the Bowie LP this tune is on!).

  69. b.... l....

Very sad to discover and understand David was not its creator ...

    b.... l....

Es como si fuera de él, la versión de Bowie es genial.

    b.... l....

He gave it a new life.

    b.... l....

    +Albert L you're right.

  70. T.... F....

Interesting this first version of the song, he has a very beutiful and soulfull voice, the music arrangement with the strings is quite not my favourite though.

  71. F.... G....

    Johnny is great!

  72. s.... s....

    D-D-D-D-D-DJ SMOKEY

  73. K.... ....

    I like Bowie's version better.

    K.... ....

+Kristoffer Infante Me too... love that touch of soft jazz and more sensuality. Nina Simone's is nice too...

    K.... ....

Nina Simone's version owns this song.

  74. K.... O....

    This is a heavenly voice.

  75. h.... ....

    Beautiful song... beautiful version...

  76. S.... E....

    In honor of David Bowie.

    S.... E....

    +Susan Erickson Nice idea

    S.... E....

+Susan Erickson ......a very beautiful tribute.

    Thank you!

  77. L.... ....

Beautiful song...Nina Simone is my favorite version of this song💕. The lyrics are so beautiful.

    L.... ....

+LEDANCETHERAPY Awesome version, however I'm partial to Candy Dulfer's with vocalist Sherry Dyanne...very soulful with the sax..

    L.... ....

Mine is Cat Powers's version from movie: "Into the forest."

    L.... ....

    I'm curious and open
    minded enough to
download these other versions and judge
    for myself. But it's
going to take an Earth-shaking per-
formance to dethrone Mr. Johnny Mathis as
    King of interpreters
    of this lordly song.

    L.... ....

Don't miss giving a listen to Billy Mackenzie's (of the Associates fame) version.

    L.... ....

Billy MacKenzie's interpretation is exquisite and my favorite. Rest in peace Billy <3

  78. J.... M....

Johnny Mathis does indeed own this song!

    J.... M....

    Sorry, Bowie owns it...

    J.... M....

    Sorry, Nina Simone owns it...

    J.... M....

    sorry, Esperanza Spalding owns it...
(to be honest, all of them are beautiful renditions of this song)

    J.... M....

The song owns itself. It can be sung brilliantly by anyone because of the sheer magnificance of the hauntingly, beautiful melody and profound lyrics. Mathis, Simone, Bowie, George Michael. All are elevated to the top of their game when paying homage to this masterpiece.

  79. J.... M....

Johnny Mathis does indeed own this song - HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL!

  80. M.... B....

first heard this by David Bowie who is a legend of course... but now johnny Mathis; well, his voice is pure beautiful

  81. s.... ....

This was one of the last 78rpm records I bought. By then the sound was so good, it seemed even better than the microgroove alternative.

  82. o.... s....

This Johnny Mathis version is the very best - someone else said it first, but all I can think of is h-a-u-n-t-i-n-g fading into the dusk of evening....

    o.... s....

I just listened to a few renditions by Nina Simone and to me she is a close second...... a wonderful song...

  83. C.... B....

I first heard this sung by George Michael, and loved it. Then my bit of research brought me to Johnny Mathis, and this is different but really haunting. Now I want to see the film. Anyone know where I can download it? TIA

    C.... B....

Nina Simone does a decent job of it as well

    C.... B....

    And David Bowie!!!

    C.... B....

Bowie and Nina Simone are worth a listen

    C.... B....

+Catherine Baker Great song, great lyrics.... Nina Simone's version is beautifull and Bowie's is superb!

  84. V.... Q....

For my father who loved this singer, i remember. I love you my daddy.

  85. D.... K....

This is a decent version but Check Out George Michael's version. It's much better in my opinion.

  86. s.... ....

Here's some obscure trivia; on this day in 1962 {March 4th} Connie Stevens performed "Wild Is The Wind" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Johnny Mathis' version peaked at #22 on the national charts, while the flip-side, "No Love (But Your Love)", reached #21...
"Wild Is The Wind" was nominated* for an 1957 Academy Award for 'Best Original Song'; the winner was "All the Way" from the film 'The Joker is Wild'...
    * The other nominees were "An Affair to Remember" from 'An Affair to Remember', "April Love" from "April Love", and "Tammy" from 'Tammy and the Bachelor'; and  "April Love" and "Tammy both reached #1 on Billboard's Top 100 chart...

  87. A.... D....

Equally brilliant is the David Bowie rock cover of this (y)

    A.... D....

    @Ajay D'Almeida Not

    A.... D....

    +taddyd1 I say Yes

    A.... D....

Bowie's is BETTER - love Johnny but David's version is just sublime.

  88. k.... ....

I love this song! I could listen to it all day!I I wish I had been born between 1935 and 1940

Eu amo essa música! Eu podria ouví-la o dia inteiro! Gostaria de ter nascido entre 1935 e 1940.

  89. r.... ....

Johnny's version by far the best, superb!

    r.... ....

@rm57 I JUST heard this version right now for the first time. I thought it was a Nina Simon song until read in Wiki that this is the first version recorded. I must say WOW! I do like Nina's version faaaaar more but this is very beautiful. I'm in love with it.

    r.... ....

    Jono Mcleery's version is lovely

  90. j.... ....

This is a beautiful melody composed by Dimitri Tiomkin and words by Ned Washington. And, Johnny, as usual, gives a superb performance. But, some credit is also due to the arranger...the person who writes down what instruments play what chords and notes. In this case, the arranger was Ray Ellis. This is also his orchestra and choir which he directed.

    j.... ....

So glad credit was given to Ray Ellis. To really appreciate his orchestrations, be sure to listen to Billie Holiday's album, "Lady in Satin".

  91. j.... ....

Just magical, can still turn my heart inside out and stop my breathing!!! Might sound dramatic, but this is what a song that "plays me" instead of me "playing it" can do to me!!! This version has never been equaled <3 !

    j.... ....

This whole album was playing all the time in my  living room, when i was living in Puerto Rico in the late 50's...you have to listen to the whole album, so romantic. I can still  here it playing, and where i was,  and it was in 1957 ..i'm in my 60's now,, it still affects me... the Album is "Johnie s Greatest Hits"....this one in particular really does it...

    j.... ....

@jjs490 Hi  !!     Your comments are spot on !        THIS song captures my attention like no other !!   His album of Johnnies Greatest Hits has NO equal....EXACTLY like THIS song of his !  Garry...age 68.....Australia...December 26...2014.

    j.... ....

I so agree, Garry!  No one else sings it like Johnny.

    j.... ....

    HE is my ETERNAL idol !!  ^ _ ^   !

  92. N.... U....

    heyyy man!

  93. C.... V....

Melodia maravilhosa! Voz incomparável, que venho ouvindo desde os anos 1970.

  94. J.... K....

Thank you for posting this beauty without all the added graphics junk.

  95. S.... K....

Mysterious tune. "You Kiss me, and with your kiss the world begins," Wow!!!

  96. L.... C....

This is one of the two Mathis songs that i sang to perfection when i went to an audition at The Purple Onion in 1962. I had just come to California and chose Berkeley because my brother was stationed in Oakland. After 2 days notice, in the Chronicle and Herald Examiner 400 acts showed up from all over the USA. I sang as #99 and was immediately proclaimed the winner. The other 301 were told that i could not be emulated.

Since they've reopened, i would love to film a video of that audition, i can still sing just as good. Listen to "Reach for a star" at
    https://myspace.com/doowophalloffame/mixes

    L.... C....

+toni jay I never cared who thinks what, but since you asked. Listen to "Reach for a star" https://myspace.com/doowophalloffame and go to https://www.facebook.com/doowopsvoice/?fref=nf get my phone number and call me, i will sing on the phone and you tell me if an audience will listen to me.

    L.... C....

Lonnie Cook the link for 'reach for a star is broken :<

  97. m.... ....

You kiss me, and with your kiss the world begins.  Whatever happened to romance?

  98. J.... B....

C'mon, Johnny owns this song as anyone who goes back to '57 knows.

    J.... B....

Again, listen to David Bowie's cover-it's by far the best version.
