Johnny Mathis - What Will My Mary Say Lyrics
I must be going (Don't go)
My heart is showing (Don't go)
I better hurry away
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say?
Your lips are thrilling
My arms are willing
I know that I shouldn't stay
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say?
What would I do if she should need me
And find me kissing you?
She's always trusted me completely
Her poor heart would break in two
I must be going (Don't go)
My heart is showing (Don't go)
I better hurry away
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say?
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say?
(Don't go)
(Don't go)

Johnny Mathis What Will My Mary Say Comments
What a glorious voice. I wonder if he thought about men when he sang.
This is the first time I've heard this version. It's good, but Jay and the Americans' is much better.

A great talent..love his mellow velvet voice.
ive always been a player, but i was in a serious relationship with a girl named marylou and when i heard this song i couldnt cheat on her. if it wasnt for this song i probably would have.
Heard this the first time late at at night on a station out of Del Rio, TX, and it's still great.
So So So beautiful to listening to and I love
it.
Marty Robbins' DEVIL
WOMAN was also a smash hit during this great era of recording, and also concerns a gal named Mary who is
involved with a guy with "wandering eyes."
Milton Moore
Woke yesterday hearing this song in my mind.
Did I just die and go to heaven, so beautiful!!!
Heard all the others but this is the best version
All the others? Besides Jay Black, who else recorded this song?
With a Friday night date!!!!!!
who was the back ground singer on What will my Mary say??
A time and a place for us 60's people.
Beautiful.
Johnny Mathis'
splendid, rhapsodic, ethereal, enthralling voice was the best friend an echo chamber ever had!
It kept many a songwriter in shoes also!
You said it best, Milton. Thank you.
With gratitude for the compliment!
(Google Charley Pride on YOU'LL
STILL BE THE ONE
on Augustus66FUL
ch. Another of his recordings which
could easily be decreed as his
best ever if there
were not so many
others just as great. A nice
problem to have!)
ALWAYS GREAT ...
Love how Johnny switches so effortlessly from baritone to falsetto. Great voice control.
Johnny Mathis is a tenor who could sing in a lower key,
but he does have
the deep tone of
a baritone when
doing so.
Also, he never used falsetto in
this recording. He
just pitched his
natural voice into
a higher key at times.
Oui,for my lovely wife Mary.xx.Oui.
Beautiful song ,,,, what a voice.
THE FIRST RECORD OF HIS THAT I GAVE MYSELF! MY MAMA WAS APPALLED!
Just an amazing singer... each song is better than the last... we've been so lucky to enjoy him
What will Mary say about the 32 viewers who had turned thumbs down? :D
Certainly one of
his most enchanting songs.
Marty Robbins had a hit song around this time
that also dealt
with a straying
partner looking
elsewhere, and
the object of his misplaced affection was named Mary. The
song is titled DEVIL WOMAN.
Such a beautiful voice, singing such a touching song! The song warns the singer to leave so he will not hurt his "Mary," but the desire to stay is so strong! What will he do; stay or leave?
Still LUV this song!!
great tune ,reminds me of a cemetery scene.
its aholes like u that ruin the comments !!!
For Buddy Fafard:
Congratulations on selecting the
WRONG PERSON
to refer to as an
asshole, not once,
but in a second comment. You
don't go on a public channel and make offensive remarks
about people's
favorite songs
without expecting some STRONG
pushback, you
ill-willed illiterate dingbat. Back in
Texas we refer to jackasses like you as suffering from
diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain. Come back and refer to
me as an asshole
a THIRD time, and
see what happens!
I was in San Fran (his home town) when this song came out.. Al
One of my all time Favorites too.Great song,Great Artist.
A beautiful song that brings back memories in my younger days.Love it.
Beautiful song written by Eddie Snyder and Paul Vance.
Happy Father's Day in Heaven, Dad. I love you. Your "Mary"
The only man with a liquid voice. Such talent!!
Bill blandford That is a great way of describing his voice.
THIS is my all-time favorite song from the Velvet Voice! Wow could this guy sing!
Even after he achieved great success, he continued vocal lessons. Johnny was a star athlete in high school in SF. Nice guy.
Bob, this is my all-time favorite by Johnny as well.
Johnny can still sing well.
It's good to hear that he's still with us!!! I've been a fan since the late fifties!!! Very talented singer!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting (May 14 , 2017 ).Pat Boone,by the way, is 84,and still in very good health!!!(Fan Also )
Love Johnny Mathis. Pat Boone not so much. In fact, not at all.
An angel's voice.
One of our greatest national and global treasures. Thank you, God.
my wife and I would love sitting in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine listening to him
Beautiful song....the dark haired girl with red lipstick looks like Winona Ryder!!!
One of the most distinctive voices in music recording history...
Unrequited lust? Or lust that was fulfilled? I think the latter is the answer.
I think the words leave one wondering........... ;-)
@Phaedrax2 You're probably correct. Love the song.
Think! Respect and Cherish, your partner!
Beautiful.😃.
superb song performed brilliantly by an extraordinary talent....Johnny Mathis .
I must be going (don't go)
My heart is showing (don't go)
I better hurry away
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say
Your lips are thrilling
My arms are willing
I know that I shouldn't stay
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say
What would I do if she should meet me
And find me kissing you
She's always trusted me completely
Her poor heart would break in two
I must…be going,
My heart is stalling
I better hurry away
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say
If I don't leave I'll be sorry
What will my Mary say...
My favorite Johnny Mathis recording.
Mine too. Take a listen to the version done by Jay Black of Jay and the Americans. Excellent cover.
Beautiful!
Thanks for posting this, lovely song, and a beautiful video!
he-may-a-homo-but-what-a-terrific-voice
@Phaedrax2 There are many performers in the arts that are gay and there always has been. In the modern era it is more acceptable and that's as it should be. I agree with your post. Johnny mathis has a great gift and I am glad he has shared it with the world and the fact he is gay is only subtext; the man is a genuinely nice individual.
+James Dunn, well said 😊
john borucki This has to be one of the cruelest things to say to another human. Especially when you don’t show your cowardly face. What a jerk.
You may be a moron, but you know how to post a comnent on YouTube.
A terrific song by one of the best singers ever!
Who is the woman repeating "don't go?"
Tom M I would like to see what she looks like.
This is a nice version but I like Jay Black's version the best.
my wife mmm I'm bugggereerd
My wife ? well she took of to find the stars, I have never been happier...

LOVE IT
I just love listening to Johnny Mathis songs
Lovely Johnny ,my pleasure to have seen you live in Glasgow Scotland!!!

my father would alway play this song when i was a kid...and i love listening to it..because my mother name was Mary....and my father name was John....my father always seem to smile while this song was playing....Johnny Mathis was a wonderful singer...i loved all his songs
so sweet.
even though I never married this is my favorite song by johnny mathis .....love the beaconing call of...don't go
Nice Song!!Jan.10,2016
Just saw him in concert this past Friday night. EXCELLENT Still going strong at 80
I saw him in 1984- one of my all-time favorite concerts. In 2017, he's still going strong at 81.
Jim H 82 this September 30th.
Excellent!
@Roberto COSTA FERREIRA 15 June 2019. Wolf Trap, Virginia.
Amazing singer. Amazing.
buriedinvinyl perfect song
I think all us ladies called Mary love this song.....
Mary will get mad, no doubt (LAUGH). Thanks much for posting!!
Probably my favorite Johnny Mathis song, from several very good ones.
He was a hell of a crooner, gay or not.
+Rda Abbe That's for sure.
What does that have anything to do with anything?
For sonny: Look.
The guy made an innocuous statement, and
you just had to
make an issue out
of it. You need to
take the burr out
of your ass and get a life!😠
@Milton Moore Still a stupid statement. Kinda like, great singer left-handed or not.
This song always makes me think of my parents John & Mary. Who were most faithful. good teachers
The best version ever.
Knowing years later Johnny publicly came out gay, interesting he was weak fending off women wanting to give him love
Weak???? He had the strength to come out as gay in a world with people like you! That took a whole lot more STRENGTH that you will ever have, buddy! The only thing weak and limited that I see is your mind!
For Kurtsupreme:
Stevie wonder expressed his opinion, which was
totally innocuous
and inoffensive,
and like an infernal, ill-willed,
uncivilized jerk, you lashed out at him in a demeaning
personal attack,
both on his strength and his mind, knowing nothing about this person
and making nasty
put-downs about
what you have purely projected out of your own shallow and negatively biased mind. People like you
are the
obtuse, hate mongering, aggressive, Nazi
mentalitied banes
of you tube comment pages,
who cannot bear
to have anyone engage their God-given right to express an opinion or offer any insight if it is
not directly in line
with your own. I
thank God every day that oppressive, midget-minded,
mind-control
dingbats like you
are not in charge of things.
Milton Moore: I stand by my comment...........it's 2018, not 1963! The world has become enlightened on such sexual issues! Once the light has been provided and some individuals choose to stay on the dark side of history, those individuals are no longer expressing a valid opinion; but rather, they are subversive to social progress and evolution. Again, I stand by my statement. There was nothing weak about Johnny fending off women who wanted to give him love any more than it would be weak for a heterosexual male fending off men who wanted to give him love! People all have their unique sexual preferences! What part of it don't you get? He should be happy that Johnny can express his sexuality in 2018.........he couldn't have in 1963. I believe that Steviewonder still lives in 1963. Perhaps, YOU do as well! Steviewonder made a very anachronistic statement that betrays his age and his heteronormative, heterosexist, intolerance of sexual diversity. In a more modern world where heteronormative and heterosexist statements are no longer valued, Steviewonder needed a gentle reminder.........that is all that I gave him. By the way, you called me a Nazi! Didn't the Nazi's send gay people to the concentration camps? I rest my case!
A fair number of show biz folks are gay. I never cared whether they were or not. Johnny is a blessing.
@James Dunn Johnny Mathis was a world-class athlete in his youth.
+Gil Chimes...Thank-you for posting this wonderful story about YOUR DAD playing the "harmonica" on this song. The 2 things that always STOOD OUT (to me) in this song was the HARMONICA and the girl saying "DON'T GO".
Heres a beautiful song
My parents used to have his all time greatest hits lip and this song is on there. Now I have the same album thanks to me finding it at a goodwill store. My favorite part is where the woman on there says don't go. Thanks for posting
I don't think anything surpasses what Mr. Mathis produced in his early years. His tone was unique, his phrasing has never been duplicated.
Give a listen to one of his earlier works, the CD " Heavenly", backed by an orchestra. Superb.
Great song. Great singer.
Johnny Mathis<<>>What Will My Mary Say<<>>
I do not know but the gal he's with says, "Don't go."
Beautiful song by a truly great singer. This song and its softly melodic beauty bring back fond memories of an entirely different era. An era which, personally, was much happier. But an era in which, unfortunately, Mr. Mathis had to keep secrets which have been hinted at by one poster here.
I had the honor to meet Johnny, at the Lake Sherwood Country Club. I think for the first time in my life I was speechless!!!! The man has aged so gracefully, it's amazing. What really threw me, was how he was so kind, and friendly. It's something to know for all the years I was in the business, before, or after, I never heard a bad word spoken about him.
A MAGNIFICENT PERSON...IF YOU HAVE NEVER MET HIM, YOU HAVE LOST SOMETHING GREAT!!!!!
I really want to but I'm way out in the Philippines. Hope he can come here.
Just brilliant song and voice.
This song brings back such wonderful teenage memories.
