Johnny Mathis - Isn't It Romantic Lyrics

I've never met you, yet never doubt dear
I can't forget you, I've thought you out, dear
I know your profile and I know the way you kiss
Just the thing I miss on a night like this

Isn't it romantic?
Music in the night, a dream that can be heard
Isn't it romantic?
Moving shadows write the oldest magic word

I hear the breezes playing in the trees above
While all the world is saying you were meant for love

Isn't it romantic?
Merely to be young on such a night as this?
Isn't it romantic?
Every note that's sung is like a lover's kiss

Sweet symbols in the moonlight
Do you mean that I will fall in love per chance?
Isn't it romance?

Sweet symbols in the moonlight
Do you mean that I will fall in love per chance?
Isn't it romance?

Johnny Mathis Isn't It Romantic Comments
  1. t.... m....

This is what popular music used to be - elegant, sophisticated, aimed at adults, and with great singers like Mathis.  Compare that with what there is now:  rap crap, and bubble gum music aimed at 12 year olds.

  2. M.... T....

I see my brother right next to the Great Johnny Mathis come back charleston blue Peter Deanda. He reminds me of Johnny in some pictures but my oldest brother Lucky they called him really looks a lot like Johnny in the face. Isnt that nice I just had to say it. MARIA.

  3. S.... ....

My favorite song of all time (I heard it first in "Sabrina" back in ''54 when I was 11 years old) and my favorite male singer of all time, but this excellent version is not my favorite. The most beautiful of all is in the soundtrack of "The Day of the Locust", a sparkling fox-trot version sung by Michael Dees which, alas, only lasts 1:45 minutes.

  4. C.... M....

I first heard it on ALLY MCBEAL where she's trying to get a kiss from LARRY PAUL....

if you happen to like classic movies- you'll hear it in the background of many. I tried to make a list once!

    Just the thing I miss
    On a night like this
If dreams are made of imagination
I'm not afraid of my own creation
With all my heart my heart is here for you to take
    Why should I quake
    I'm not awake

I listen to Johnny Mathis every day, since I heard his voice for the first time,so many years ago.He is like food to me,I don't need to listen any thing else.I'm a flute player in a symphony orchestra in Rio de Janeiro, my students listen to him as a home work,so that they can learn what expressivity is all about.

My prayer is that Johnny will sing to us in heaven! John 3:16 say, "For God so loved the world that who so ever believe in him will not perish but have everlasting life." Sing on Johnny, sing on!!

    S.... F....

My prayer is that the music of beauty will continue here, on the lips of a new generation. JM is the greatest, but, you've gotta go sometime, unfortunately.

  10. S.... G....

Well, like EVERYTHING Mathis does....EXQUISITE!   Right up there with the Top 2 (the other one being Englebert's "I'll Be Seeing You".....also Off The Charts.......

Thank you Lord for the gift of Johnny Mathis.  He means so much to us music lovers. He has this mystical voice, romantic and bedroom voice.

  13. D.... S....

Images of audrey hepburn float in my head every time I hear this song

    D.... S....

I often watch Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn on my Tivo just to enjoy this wonderful song!

  14. K.... M....

An orchestral version of the oh so romantic song was used for a series of programmes on Radio Luxembourg (a station that used to transmit English programmes for UK listeners). It was 'The Voice of Romance the glance that follows down the street, the sun that caresses your face on waking etc' The lush orchestral sounds would swell and then ...

Johnny...Johnny...What can we say? He's magic; He's wonderful; SO special

    j.... r....

So true, James- . He is all of those things- and some that words alone do not express.-. Enjoy.

    j.... r....

+lenoremewton  Thank you for sharing us Johnny Mathis. He is incredible, never get tired of listening to him and watching him live is a wonderful feeling. What can you suggest so I could have a picture with him on March 18? Shall I write him a little note and give it to his crew? That is my one wish on my 78th birthday, and probably just a little kiss.

so true, Artie. Next best thing- we  get to 'bask' in the enjoyment of this magical  master. Enjoy.

  18. A.... B....

The most romantic song in the world. I love it!

    A.... B....

Isn't it romantic?

  19. m.... ....

Thank you for another of many favorites from Johnny. Made my day!!

  20. P.... D....

Real nice that you sang to your bride on your wedding day.
In my courting days I used to sing to my pretty little redhead girlfriend. This would be followed by a little kiss then she would say, 'You're a bit of an eejit aren't you'. Anyway, we got married and have been together now for 47 years. I'm still singing to her and she's still telling me that I'm a bit of an eejit.

  21. l.... ....

Kevin- how interesting that you'd post on this particular video from my channel tonight. I JUST finished watching Sabrina for the upteenth time-- dreaming of all that romance and this gorgeous song. I just love the way Johnny sings it- as i said above- it 'sends me'. How lovely that you sang this to your bride- how lucky is she- as are you. thanks for sharing your sweet moment. Enjoy.

  22. K.... G....

Lenore, I sang this to my Bride on our Wedding Day. She had tears in her eyes and her reaction made me tear up too

  23. l.... ....

i am 'with' you on all those dreams! Seen Sabrina so many times know most of the lines by heart. This is a beautiful song- and- Johnny's voice is dreamy- . enjoy!

  24. l.... ....

so glad you like it Maureen - it really is one of my favorites too. Enjoy enjoy:)!

  25. m.... ....

THANK YOU for posting this awesome number, one of my big Johnny Mathis favourite amongst so many of his magical songs. He is so romantic.....!!!!!

  26. N.... H....

Google "ballads" and see what videos come up.

  27. l.... ....

The instrumental of this song has played in many movies over the years. It is a beautiful song- i love it. The composers were Rogers and Hart (1932) - among one of the best of composing partners- . I don't know of a song 'like' this- but you can look up the composers- beautiful pieces. I love the way Johnny sings this- he 'owns' it. enjoy

  28. A.... X....

Does anybody knows similar songs to this one?? I very knew in this gender and I would like to hear a lot more from it. Beautiful.

Try "I Know Why" by Glenn Miller on you tube

    I am with you-!! enjoy

  30. S.... ....

One of my million favorite songs sung by my favorite singerl.

  31. l.... ....

yes- you know the song IS in Sabrina- (the one she and William Holden dance to when she returns from Paris)-- she has long been a favorite of mine- i admired her generosity, beauty and love for her sons.

    l.... ....

They never got to dance to it because of the broken champagne glasses. It was his brother played by Humphrey Bogart who got the honor.

  32. l.... ....

this continues to be my number one favorite song- funny b/c it's a later one- but it has special meaning to me- so glad you liked it:) i recently redid it w/o the photos of Audrey- but she is wonderful to look at- . enjoy

  33. l.... ....

@solitario24061960 - Obrigado. Então, muito se perde na tradução. Por favor, aproveite.

  34. l.... ....

@solitario24061960 -Bonita, sim. Eu não entendo a maravilhosa em 'infernal, como eu não acho que a essência de Johnny nunca vai acabar por ali perto, ele é angelical e sempre será. Desfrutar.

  35. l.... ....

@BuckieBear - you're welcome Sherrie! i found that fact when i created the second version of the song a while back. (like it so much I did it twice) - thank you though _ i know you love music history. As it turns out there are many films in which the song has been performed- if you're not aware of some check the notes on the recent video. Thank you - glad you are enjoying them.

  36. B.... ....

Thank you, Lenore, for this and all your Mathis videos!
It turns out that Jeannette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier actually premiered this song in 1932 in the movie "Love Me Tonight," singing lyrics not included in the published version of the song. Certainly a timeless song, like the current singer of it!

  37. J.... E....

THE VERY BEST VOICE...JACK R. ENGLISH ........WEST HOLLYWOOD

  38. l.... ....

@Avianette - I'm glad you enjoy it so. It is such a beautiful song- and those images pair very nicely. Thank you. Enjoy.

  39. l.... ....

@deaddirtycarnie - interesting way of expressing it- but i agree- it's other worldly- really one of my favorites of all. Enjoy.

  40. J.... ....

It's amazing how a song like this can take people farther than a fleet of planes.

  41. l.... ....

@ArthurKaletzky - is a beautiful line- quite intoxicating. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy.

  42. A.... K....

"Music in the night, a dream that can be heard"

The most philosophical and elegant lyric line I know. Beautifully sums up everything that jazz means to me, and that is a great deal.

  43. l.... ....

@beweau I love this CD and this is my favorite of all songs- i don't mind repeating it- i'd love to hear him sing it in concert one day--- . Very clear to me why he was nominated for a Grammy that year for this creation. The liner notes by Jay Landers are always a treat to read- he's a wonderfully, expressive writer- who describes Johnny's gifts in such eloquent terms. Enjoy!

  44. b.... ....

Sabrina is a lovely movie, an oldfasion one. It makes me see that the world has changet. Johnny sings all moviemusic in a terrific way. His voice on these new
ds sounds more "grown up" in a way. I can almost always hear in what 10-year
the recordings were made. But, he sounds exellent as always on this cd. I play it all the time. Fun also to read inside the cover, from the studio-recordings, the experience of an outsider. Berit from north.

@SadoMazoPrinceSs - Mine too- or very close- my other real favorite is also with Audrey- and features priceless Mancini music (and I've heard Johnny say it's one of HIS favorite pieces:) "Two for the Road"- both wonderful movies- and the music is heavenly. I am such a broken 'record' :) on this - BUT_ this is my a FAVORITE Johnny song- dont' know why - it just gets me everytime:) enjoy.

@Siciliana101 - sounds wonderful! remember 'Audrey's tiara! (Breakfast at Tiffany's) Enjoy.

  49. S.... ....

@lenoremewton hearing this song makes me want to return to piano-playing so i can surprise my husband some evening....i'll be wearing an elegant "little black dress" and candles will be lit...

  50. l.... ....

@ceichler64 - so glad- that's lovely that it reminds of that very special someone in your life. Enjoy.

  51. l.... ....

@mooseydeucy - if I was your penpal i'd be pretty glad to receive it- it is one of my very favorite songs sung by Johnny. I listen to it endlessly. Hope she enjoys!

Jag älskar Johnny Mathis sjunga denna vackra sång. Tack.

  55. l.... ....

@damone77 - I love it as well. Wonderful, timeless song- . You're very welcome!

  56. l.... ....

@arandomperson240 - I don't know about the Glenn Miller connection- it was played in the movie Sabrina (as shown here)- .All the best in you search! Wonderful wedding song! Thanks for stopping by.

  57. l.... ....

@rickw1100 - Ditto. This is my favorite CD and my favorite song- and unabashed, I listen to it almost every night. This video was fun- as I'm a very big Audrey fan- they both have something in common in addition to talent- they are both simple, humble people-. Nice- maybe that's why their work is so 'sweet'. Glad you enjoy it- and many thanks for you lovely comments!!

  58. r.... ....

I absolutely love this C.D. The orchestration here accompanying his smooooooth vocals, make this "other wordly". Fan-tas-tic!! Thank you beautiful Lenore!

  59. l.... ....

@irishbelle65 - Well, ,.. (ha, ha), i've never had a bad night's sleep yet! It's really a heavenly song to me. You're welcome!

  60. l.... ....

@irishbelle65 - You are so very welcome. I am becoming a 'broken record' (pardon the pun)- but I love this CD and this song is my favorite of all. It puts me to sleep most nights:) Enjoy.- well worth buying either the mp3 or really the whole CD is fabulous .I wish Johnny had won the Grammy for it that year he was nominated- he deserved it.

  61. l.... ....

While I can't translate fully- I understand! Thank you!

  62. l.... ....

I love it as well - i listen to it OFTEN!! I dont' have the instrumental- only what you can hear on the film clip of that dance scene in Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. That would be worth searching for! So glad you like it.

  63. l.... ....

THIS IS IT!!! The song played- and the one that David Larrabee (Holden) used to 'swoon' the ladies, with champagne, was "Isn't It Romantic". (the movie was 1954- i think you just transposed those numbers). In addition to Johnny's wonderful, romantic expression of this song, Audrey Hepburn was the epitome of class and much more. Thus the pairing of these photos with the song. Enjoy! (I don't know if you can find it on a soundtrack--)

  64. l.... ....

they are beautiful lyrics- I love how Johnny sings the phrases before the main melody- they set the stage for the whole story of the song. This is one of my favorites. Glad you enjoy it .

  65. m.... ....

    BEAUTIFUL....Thanks for posting...!!!

  66. l.... ....

I agree -wonderful arrangement and piano by Jorge Calandrelli- i had not heard of him before but am now noticing him on several recordings elsewhere (recently on a YoYoMa CD crossing over his music with brazilian music...-- ) so glad you like it ~

  67. p.... ....

Yeah, Johnny M is great, and he brings a tear to my eye here. Great orchestration and piano by Jorge Calandrelli too!

  68. l.... ....

thanks- i've said this many times- this is one of my favorite Mathis songs- the whole combination of the song and his beautiful voice--- heaven

  69. l.... ....

    Hi Jayne
sorry I didn't see this until today- thank you. I do love Ella's voice- such beautiful 'instruments' and like Johnny, a classic that can never be duplicated. Glad you enjoyed it- i really love this song and whole CD. Well worth buying.

  70. j.... ....

Yes...he's wonderful!!!. Bet you love Ella Fitzgerald too...she has quite a good set of pipes too!.
    Kindness
    Jayne

  71. l.... ....

i could almost say 'ditto, ditto, ditto' to much of what you say- but I don't recognize 'old'! (i have a lively 99 year old mother--her attitude about life has kept her 'young'). Glad you like this one- Johnny has helped many people more than he could possibly ever know. What a gift! thanks.

  72. m.... ....

I was born singing and loving music, and I am old now, and he still excells anything these ears have heard....My personal favorite song he does is Deep Purple, and it sort of went unnoticed.!!Would love to hear it on youtube. In the ups and downs of my lifetime Johnny has always made the ups a little brighter. He truly has a gift that he has shared with so many. love you Johnny!!!

  73. l.... ....

I'm pretty sure the song was all instrumental in the original movie. I don't know about the remake. There is a song sung by Sting in the newer version- but a different song.

  74. l.... ....

He must have sung it in the newer version of Sabrina with Harrison Ford- the original - with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden was in 1954- a few years before Johnny started singing. That would have been a great combination!

  75. l.... ....

I agree! I definitely think is was an error to give the Grammy to Michael Buble that year (tough choices- johnny and tony bennet)- Michael is a good singer - I enjoy him- but he does not have the passion or the individuality of either Johnny or Tony. This song was the winner - and it is a great cd!
