Johnny Mathis - Hallelujah Lyrics

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You know I've been here before
I've seen this room
And I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
The love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did - well, really - what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah...

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

To GC, who cares about awards, any intelligent person knows Johnny Mathis is deserving of a Kennedy center award. It is all for show and the insecure person might be bothered by not getting awards but l don't think Johnny Mathis is. His gift to the world to see him still performing at 83 and doing it well is more valuable than a colored ribbon around his neck and fake people in the room.clapping for him. How many of the people who have received this award can share the gift they have at 83. Think about it. Johnny Mathis is a legend and my musical hero.

Have had the good fortune of hearing Johnny Mathis in concert on three occasions : 1978, 1981, and 2012. His voice was still as strong as ever over those years. On the strength of his vocals and for such a longevity of career, he deserves every music lifetime achievement award possible. Hopefully all those associations have already done so. Please come back to Ontario soon.

When I was in high school, my boyfriend and I snuck (sp) into the Greek Theater to watch a Johnny Mathis concert. We ended up sitting on a tree outside of the theater, along with others around us. The folks near our area kept yelling..."queer, freak, homo, freak", etc. I was disgusted !! And Johnny sang right thru it all.....a performer thru and thru.

  18. Claudette Williams

    Well done

  19. Cocoa Femme

I prefer Andre Rieu's version of this. This rendition's tempo is too slow for my liking.

  30. M M

If dear Johnny only knew what he was actually saying! Hallelujah means "Praise be to Jehovah"! This name, Jah, is a shortened form of the Creator's name, Jehovah, and Jah is still written in the KJV of the Bible. The Creator's full name, Jehovah, is still in the original scrolls (kept under lock and key in Jerusalem) over 4 thousand times written in the tetragrammaton (meaning "four letters"), YHWH. There are many other places ancient scrolls show the full name, Jehovah, the personal name of our divine creator of life. King James had the Creator's full name removed all but 5 times in his original popularized version (one place the full name, Jehovah, was still found was in Psalms 83:18 but the divine name is now fully removed from the KJV except for the shortened form, "Jah"). This is all according to divine (from God) prophecy. His full name is now being restored upon the entire inhabited earth by Jehovah's Witnesses, hence, their name! In using Hallelujah, Johnny is helping replace God's name in people's minds. There is much more that needs be said to open-hearted people, ones sighing and crying and grieving over this system of things and Jehovah is using all kinds of means to have the good news about the kingdom that is so near at hand to be heard. This is giving as many people as possible the chance to hear and choose for themselves what action they want to take while there is still time! "" can explain more or write me! [email protected]

    Ann Walsh

I am so sorry for your loss! NanaAnn976

    Tony Barber

hello nana2banana I too lost my son! 7years ago, it doesant go away: but hearing Johnny sing this song somehow gives me peace *

    M M

    Tony Barber
Hi Tony. Having your son taken from you by means of death is a terrible loss. Did you know that the song Johnny Mathis sings, "Hallelujah", actually means "Praise be to Jah"? Jah is the shortened name for Jehovah, which means "He who causes to become". Yes, it is the actual name of the Creator of all in this entire Universe. Jehovah did not originally create the first man and woman to die. The initial intent was that they become fruitful and fill the entire earth, starting in a park like garden. Jah created man with the ability to choose what he would do, just as He did the Angelic beings whose home is in heaven. Jehovah created man to be the head of his wife and children, with the wife being in subjection to her husband and the children to have respect for their parents. It is a wonderful way for humans to interact, the husband being filled with love for his family and a deep passion for his wife, wanting to please her and work for their union to be always growing in ways of respect and joy for one another, the wife always working to support her husband in his decisions for his family, being joyous with him when his decisions would meet with his approval and being as sad as he when his plans might not turn out as he had thought they would. All these are explained to people in our letter we have that God had 60 different people write during different generations, called the Bible. This was done by means of Jehovah's Holy Spirit or "activating force" - what He had used to create with. This activating force Jehovah placed into the minds and hearts of these certain people so they felt compelled to write as they did, being directed by Jah in their expressions. We can know this to be true as the entire Bible "goes together" even tho many of these people did not live in the same time period. There is one author of the Bible and that is Jehovah God. He used people to write what He wanted mankind to know and fully understand so they could actually live in peace forever. Your precious son is now asleep in death but he will be resurrected to learn about the true God and choose for himself if he wants to continue living forever upon an earth transformed into a glorious new system of things, having all eternity to live in a youthful, healthy body. No divisions among people, no wars, no poor vs rich, no hospitals, no prisons. If these words appeal to you click on or write me! [email protected]
You are receiving this cuz I CARE. I'm an old hippie, one of the ones who seriously meditated with others on bringing good energy to this earth. After quite awhile of doing this, I realized that it would take a LOT more than what we were doing to help this seriously sick planet and since I had given up on religions a long time ago, didn't know where to turn. A woman came to my door with a question: "If God is a God of love, why does He permit all this pain and suffering in the world?" Shocked, I said, "That's MY question!!" Anyway, know this is sent to you with honorable love. Martha

  62. Anita Schon

Omg, I am in tears again, soulfull, so divine, so heavenly, Johnny Is still the best.

  63. Kathy Menard

Absolutely sends chills down my spine. I truly adore this wonderful, gifted entertainer, gentleman and more. The world was truly gifted the day this man was born ❤️

    maria dean

You took the words right out of my mouth, Kathy! He is truly a gift and I am thankful to be alive to experience this
    his beautiful voice.

  64. Laura Costa

Foi muito bom recordar essa voz maravilhosa de Johnny, gosto muito de suas músicas. Eles me transportam para outro mundo

  65. grooverunner

Waiting for his Columbia/Sony retrospective of all his albums, I believe at end of 2017.

    G C Renoir

$500 most places, but it is a limited edition, and many of the songs have been remastered, so it's well worth the money. Well, anything John puts out is worth it.

And this box set includes his collaboration with Chic, "I Love My Lady" produced by Nile Rodgers. FINALLY, it only took, 37 years, more or less.

  66. Cultural Marxist Watch

Peerless Johnny Mathis. 62 years of professional vocal excellence. An American treasure.

  67. Rico Tadashi

    Love it love it

  68. G C Renoir

Beautiful! John just gets better and better and better in every way. Love this song! My favorite on the CD! I do wish he would have slowed the pace a bit, but that's just personal preference. John sings perfectly, as always.

  69. Patrick Swan

Absolutely brilliant ! Please cover some more of Leonard's work Johnny

  70. Anita Schon

I listen to this over and over again, everyday, especially before going to sleep. So beautiful.

  71. Jack Archer

Gee, he still sounds very good, and this is a Wonderful, Wonderful! (so to speak) treatment of this classic Cohen song.

  72. Joyce Spark

If he doesn't win a Grammy for this one, there's something WRONG!

The Grammy's are a political organization, first and foremost.

    Joyce Spark

Maybe Clive Davis can have some political influence this year. John has never won a Grammy.....and what about The Kennedy Center Awards?!!! What a joke they have become.

    Joyce Spark

With the people that The Kennedy Center is now honoring, I consider Dr. John Mathis too far above that kind of talent to even be in that category any longer.

    G C Renoir

So sad it didn't even receive a nomination!

    Joyce Spark

I only hope that he realizes how many people in this world truly honor him for the person that he is and his magnificent vocalizations.

  73. Mark Dorais

Such an ageless, Beautiful voice. Gorgeous song by Leonard Cohen

  74. Luiz Carlos de Faria

  77. Luc Legaux

    Magnifique. From Belgium. Lucet Mp

  78. tmndayscarlet

Again Johnny brings his maturity and inner soul to this music. He is just not singing words, this is a very soulful song sung by John like nobody else can do.Bravo to you. Thanks for the new album I have on order .You have made yet another fantastic album. Your voice and spirit transcends the ages. Beautiful man, beautiful music. Love Love Happy Birthday!

  79. Carol Consolo

I attended my first Mathis Concert at Cane Park Theater in Cleveland in Summer of 1959, then stood almost next to him that year as he hit the switch to turn the Christmas lights on in Cleveland's Public Square. I have probably attended every Cleveland concert since that time. That velvet voice only gets better! We're both older Johnny but you sure handle it well! The music, and the choices for each album just keep getting better! I just received my albums and the disc from the PBS concert and now I have to go out to buy this one! Just warms my heart!

  80. Dan Brenner

    Fantastic..he still has it..

  81. Aggronn

    I <3 you Johnny

  82. MrDLOC11

How blessed of this song to have Johnny's gorgeous, timeless vocals added to the illustrious list!!

  85. raymond power

Johnny Mathis. Amazing. One of the true greats of popular music if not the very best. I love him.

  86. CG Valladares

A beautiful song sung for a beautiful world.

  87. Saleemabukhader

Johnny's voice revives what's dying inside of me. His singing fills my heart and soul with joy. Thank the Lord for Johnny Mathis.

    Joyce Spark

Your words hit the spot and describe what his singing does to me when I want to give up in the face of medical issues. Makes me want to live so that I can still hear the magic in his voice and recordings.

  88. Ron Scroggin

One great song, with one of the Best singers. Johnny Mathis knocks me over once again.

  89. Kevin Knighton

  90. Ana Lorena Herrera Mora

    Sublime, Johnny forever!

  91. Elizabeth Barbosa

Funny, whenever I heard this song in the voice of other singers, I thought of Johnny Mathis, and now he recorded this beautiful song, Very Good.

  92. Anita Schon

OMG, goose bump, thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us.

  93. Simon Galloway

His vocal is simply brilliant. Deeply moving and emotional, Johnny always had the ability to make you feel the emotion in the songs he sings. He's timeless and brilliant.

    Frank Furfaro

Simon Galloway wow he is singing high

  94. Lindy Asimus

Would be decent of you to mention this is a cover of a Leonard Cohen original.

    Charles Conaway

No one has to mention that....not a question of decency at all. Any music lover knows who brought this song to fame. JM just kills it...none better!

    Chris Evans

This guy just never disappoints utterly superb as all his music.Never retire.

    Lana Nieves

Johnny always sings other people's compositions. Anyone who knows his work knows he's a singer, not a somgwriter. Not to mention that this particular song has become a standard.

    G C Renoir

Most every music lover knows it's a Leonard Cohen song, and Johnny Mathis fans know he never writes his own music or lyrics.

  95. Mmagic37

    This is superb!!!

    Joe Martin

    So lovely

  96. Richard Shaw

This is a deeply moving song and sung in the best vocal quality of his classic songs of the 1960's. this song also reminds of his spiritual album Good Night, Dear Lord. Johnny Mathis is in his 80's and sings with the power of someone in his 40's. Bless you, Johnny Mathis. This album should appeal to everyone.

  97. Richard Shaw

This is the new album by Johnny Mathis. Richard Shaw is the author of Music Education In The Schools. Audible.Com
