John Prine - Mexican Home Lyrics

It got so hot, last night, I swear
You couldn't hardly breathe
Heat lightning burnt the sky like alcohol
I sat on the porch without my shoes
And I watched the cars roll by
As the headlights raced
To the corner of the kitchen wall.

[Chorus:]
Mama dear
Your boy is here
Far across the sea
Waiting for
That sacred core
That burns inside of me
And I feel a storm
All wet and warm
Not ten miles away
Approaching
My Mexican home.

My God! I cried, it's so hot inside
You could die in the living room
Take the fan from the window
Prop the door back with a broom
The cuckoo clock has died of shock
And the windows feel no pane
The air's as still
As the throttle on a funeral train.

[Chorus]

My father died on the porch outside
On an August afternoon
I sipped bourbon and cried
With a friend by the light of the moon
So its hurry! hurry! Step right up
It's a matter of life or death
The sun is going down
And the moon is just holding its breath.

[Chorus]

God bless John Prine forever...a master wordsmith.

Can make you laugh and cry within the same song, how many can do that?

Oh yeah...even though the music tends to take a backseat to the lyrics in his songs, it's still top notch and skillful.

JP is right up there with the best there ever was.

Well the coo coo clock has died of shock and the windows feel no pain (pane).

Sweet Revenge is a great record. JP is an amazing writer. Check out the lyrics to "A Good Time." None better.

Amazing song! He writes like no other

this song reminds me of growing up in the 60's and 70's when we had no air conditioning.
I also like to play it now when the sun's going down and the moon's just holding its breath.
A day just like today in Milwaukee, WI. A real scorcher out there.

He rocked this in 78 at tampa theater. 3rd row. Girl friend hated his music til saw him live. His humor won her over.

Dated a girl in my late 20's who was very much into country, which I wasn't, and still aren't...not that I think it's all lame mind you.

Anyway...I figured maybe she'd appreciate JP, not country, but still a folksy and unique genius...imo.

Nope...first words out of his mouth and she called him a no talent hick, without even listening to the lyrics or the music.

It'll suffice to say that our relationship pretty much ended right then and there.

Anyone who doesn't get who John Prine is, is not someone I will waste time on...

Life is to short to suffer fools.
