John Martyn - Small Hours Lyrics

Going to get on up and fly away
Go on out for another way
And a new day's dawn
Going to carry on

Keep on loving while your love is strong
Keep on loving 'til your love is gone away

Well you're very lovely, going to take you home
They say you'll be my ruin
Cos I love you so
I just love you so

Keep on loving 'til your love is gone
Keep on loving while your love is strong
All the way

I just absolutely LOVE this - it's so, so sad - conjuring up thoughts of all the atrocities and passings away of loved ones and others all over the world too. Utterly thought-provoking GENIUS - I was lucky enough to see John LIVE twice, at two gigs... RIP maestro! A man of immense musical talent and depth xxx love you, man! <3

I'd listened to this song for 30 years before I found out about the dang geese! Then I listened more closely and there they were, along with the lapping and dripping water. Didn't think this song could get any more beautiful, but it did. Geese on, John!

    M.... S....

Hahaha. I was living in the countryside when I was introduced to this album and took me a good few listens before I realised the quacking(honking?) Wasn't coming from outside :)

  23. p.... ....

and thus was chill-out music invented

I think Pink Floyd takes that credit. Have you heard their "Meddle" album? (1971) There's also "Grantchester Meadows" from Umma Gumma, and "Cirrus Minor" from More (both 1969).
But I do really love this. Didn't hear it until 1989.

  24. A.... E....

    This is incredible.

  25. R.... B....

    Absolute class music

  26. M.... ....

It’s 5am and you’ve just woken up from the night before - some house party at some friend of a friend’s. Your head feels a little delicate . The house is a mess. Everyone else is asleep. The sun is coming through. You can hear animals outside. You mull over the silence and your thoughts and you feel like you’re the only human on earth at the moment. This piece somehow makes me think of those moments.

Great description of that in-between, twilight space, and yes...this music is the perfect interlude for then.

  31. m.... a....

Sublime. This song takes you to another place entirely. It is art of a completely different order. The music business is comprised of artists and performers and the lucky few are talented enough to be both but some are merely performers. This is art from the very top drawer. If you're looking for a final song for your desert island discs selection or the music your family could play when sending you off on a burning boat to Valhalla then this is it.

    m.... a....

    Non verbal poetry...

    m.... a....

    Absolute genius.

Don't miss the moog from Steve Winwood, and the Canada Geese across the lake!
This song was later adapted and re-recorded by Martyn as "Anna" for the weird n wonderful1978 Australian feature film 'In Search of Anna'.

  34. C.... P....

    I love this human being.

  35. G.... D....

desert island disk if i could go to one

  36. P.... H....

Sounds like a beautiful grizzly bear dying with quiet dignity.

  37. G.... D....

a lot of pain is associated with this wonderful song k remember this

  38. m.... ....

love this, but grace and danger is my fave

Engineer Phill Brown, on the recording of this album:

"Chris Blackwell has this house in England that's surrounded by this big gravel pit out west of London and we did the John Martyn album out there in '76. He has these converted stables which are little flats. We set John Martyn up in one of these with his guitar pedals and amps and everything with splits all the way through there after every gadget and the guitar. We had seven or eight feeds of choice of his guitar. We then got a large PA system and we pumped the guitar out across this lake, this old gravel pit, and then mic'd up the lake basically...I've always described it as coming from another universe. This was 4 o'clock in the morning and the lake would go almost silent. We got birds and lapping water. One of the tracks, "Small Hours," is just one guitar with a few lines of vocals but it's such a full sound."

Love the background rhythmic heart beat n' gurgling air bubble sounds rising and breaking free to breath into spaces above surface waters. Paired with the music lake setting and cover image of fish flyin', the one, who got away to fly free, to see the light of a new dawn n' day..a whole new world "In another way" again. Sublime, like seed reed feather down soft notes being breathed floating and landing on still waters moving. Thank you Chris for caring to share the memory "full of inspiring sound" it's tenderness moving and merging magically so beautifully . The Air doesn't seem so Solid in the Small Hours surrendered at the new day of dawning here some how now........

  40. J.... d....

    This song is my painkiller...

  41. G.... D....

1977 they dont have the talent anymore to do this stuff

    G.... D....

    or the imagination.....

    G.... D....

George Douglas some do, but no one has the guts to put out such sparse and beautifully raw “soundscapes”.
What could they market it as??!!
