John Martyn - Excuse Me Mister Lyrics

Excuse me mister, do you have the time?
Or are you so important that it stands still for you
Excuse me mister, lend me your ear
Are you not only blind but are you scared to hear?

Excuse me mister, is that oil in the sea
Pollution in the air, mister what could that be
Excuse me mister, I'm a mister too
There's misters like you, giving me a bad name

I'm taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you that put the rest of us to shame
I'm taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, that give me a bad name
Giving me a bad name... sweet love

Excuse me mister, can't you see the children dying
You say that you can help them; you're not even trying
Excuse me mister, take a look around
Mister just look up, and you will see what's coming down

Oh, taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, that give me a bad name
Yes I'm taking the mister right out of your name
Misters like you that put the rest of us to shame
I'm taking the mister out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, giving misters like me, a bad name
You're giving me, a bad name

Mister, mister, when you're rattling on heaven's gate
Let me tell you mister, then it's going to be too late
Oh mister, mister, when you get there
They don't care how much you saved
They want to know how much you gave away

Excuse me mister, I'm a mister too
You're giving me a bad name
A mister like you, you fool

Taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, that give me a bad name
Come on, taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, give me a bad name
Taking the mister right out of your name
Cos it's misters like you, that keep giving me a bad name

Excuse me mister
Please excuse me mister
Excuse me mister, do you have the time
Or are you so important that it stands still for you
Excuse me mister lend me your ear

Should I ever find myself at these so called ‘Pearly Gates’, and asked if I had any regrets, it would be that I hadn’t seen John Martyn live in concert. My younger brother ‘checked out’ too early in similar circumstances to JM and they really are kindred spirits. Watching his wonderful clips is a great comfort. Also, I remember the first time I heard Solid Air, mamma mia!!!

    Hell John
Yesterday I saw Ben Harper played his song in the Jazz Festival Of Vienne... one another way to play this song. Honestly I prefer your version. I miss you.Your Voice and much more. Every day. God will be so pleased to sing with you... see you next time John.

I keep thinking; that whole man was a single musical instrument, with ability to sound like a whole orchestra sometimes.

A comment on the state of the world and the Corporate Arseholes who are fucking us all over for their own greed and self interest. I also cite a wonderful vid by Sting and Robert Downey Jr, on the same theme. ( Driven to Tears). Wake up people!

Les stroud has just redid this song and its awsome. If you google Les Stroud Bittern Lake you can view samples of the music on that cd. I prefer Les Strouds version but this version is way better than the orriginal

always LOVED THIS. Feel fortunate to have see John perform on several occasions. Both solo and with his band. I always enjoyed it more when he was surrounded by fellow musicians, as I think he did too.

  26. H.... H....

I am a huge Ben Harper fan, but John Martyn's cover of this song far surpasses Ben's original.

  27. D.... F....

Not enough people know about John Martyn

  29. s.... ....

Another great cover from John Martyn proving once again that slowing down a good original seems to almost always works to give a nice new perspective.

JM. One of the all-time greatest musicians. Everything about this song (lyrics, vocals and guitar work) is amazing. I could/will listen to this version very often for the rest of my life, God willing. One of my biggest regrets is that I never had the privilege of seeing him live. Thank God for the vast body of work he has gifted to humanity. RIP John and thank you.

  51. p.... ....

I miss him so much - that sound will haunt me forever

    p.... ....

Its not such small world. I was raised not far from him in Glasgow

  52. j.... c....

I first heard of john martyn about 1 month ago on johny walker sunday show.[ may you never. ] awsome. ,and have listened to his music since. I love music but had never heard of him.{Why} I feel gutted. PS. I am 67 years old.

    j.... c....

He was a great maverick and flew low under the radar. He was also a hard man to like personally and did a lot of damage to himself and others. His music though from 1969 - early 1980s is sublime and capable of making people cry. I didn't hear him until I was 30 he died 7 years later, my ice would of been very different if id heard him earlier.

    j.... c....

@SuperBlackted ive met people in my life who had been around him and the stories would put you off him but his music is so fucking beautiful its hard not to love it

    j.... c....

john callaghan I'm sure now you've heard the man himself there is no turning back!!! He's given me so much audio pleasure over the years that have contributed to the fulfilment of my very soul...A true legend indeed 👌🏻🎸

    j.... c....

He's just one of these superb musicians who remained under the radar of most people. I know it wasn't lack of exposure by the BBC because I have a DVD - John Martyn At The BBC and they had him in regular in the 1970s for sessions and filmed a lot of his concerts.

    j.... c....

sometimes.... the older we get.. the more we pay attention closer than before... same goes for certain genre and artists.. I too am guilty of discovering him too late.. but am appreciating his legacy nonetheless!!!

  53. A.... d....

This is awesome: John Martin, "Excuse me, Mister..."

  54. B.... B....

RIP John. Thanks so much for so much great music... Sing on....

  55. S.... G....

Fuck me, that *is* Paul Brady, isn't it?

  56. s.... ....

Spellbinding...easily one of the best songs/videos I've seen all year. The singing, the musicianship...this ensemble is superb.

  57. l.... ....

    Perfect

  58. g.... p....

    amaaaaazing !!

  59. R.... R....

Excuse me Mister, but this is Fucking Excellent!

    R.... R....

    too true.

  60. d.... ....

    Such talent

  61. G.... G....

Wish I'd discovered this wonderful man earlier, would 100% see him live

  62. m.... ....

After hearing this first, I was rather disappointed with Harper's song. John Martyn puts an agony of feeling into this that wasn't there before.  One of those rare occasions when the cover surpasses the original... A true artist...

    m.... ....

    That was Johns Genius.

    m.... ....

Thats because Ben harper is terrible!

    m.... ....

One of those rare occasions ? All Johnny Cash covers makes you lie :)

    m.... ....

Some of the old brilliance is still there. 10 years before, that was the time he still had the chance to full recovery.

    m.... ....

Not his song? Figures, he was a bit of a Mister son of a bitch hisself, John Martyn I mean.

  63. F.... ....

These guys could have, on several occasions, gone anywhere with this. Maybe they should have. But they have kept it SO tight, focused and so chilled. Masterful.

  64. V.... D....

I now know what 'hair standing up on the back of my neck' feels like. Superb.

  65. L.... ....

far better than ben harpers version, who cares though!

  66. J.... H....

God bless the great the one and only john Martyn . Thank you john

  67. b.... ....

love this song......groove is right here !

  68. M.... ....

No, he didn't. Its Ben Harpers tune.

  69. A.... ....

    you wish :(

  70. K.... ....

THIS . . . is the original . . . he didnt cover ben harper, ben harper covered this

  71. v.... ....

I'm a big fan of Harper's music, and this is the best cover I've ever heard of this song

  72. A.... ....

    240p never sound better!

  73. S.... ....

    Agree,Brady did great,perfect.

  74. e.... j....

@lcotter73 We, at least, agree completely on those last four words. Great cover by a true Great.

  75. K.... C....

@cooltubeish Dude I think Paul did an amazing job. I don't fancy myself as someone with any real Piano knowledge but I think what Paul did was beautiful and complemented the genius that was John Martyn perfectly. The whole songs and drips off the piano with Johns Vocals and the guitar floating with ease through it all. What a beautiful track

  76. k.... ....

    Masterpiece!

  77. c.... f....

Midnight at the olympia theatre Dublin seems like yesterday. Thanks for many the good night.

  78. j.... ....

Used to see John and Beverley around the folk club circuit in the late 60's.

  79. j.... a....

J.M The Boss. Still missing yah every day. xx

  80. e.... j....

What a genius. A true artist, one of the few. RIP Bigman.
(Only thing that disappoints me on this version is Paul Brady's soulless piano)

  81. f.... ....

Ogni volta che lo ascolto cado in verticale nelle viscere mie e della terra. Grazie John ovunque tu sia.

  82. M.... ....

What an interpretation of this song...I actually like it more that the original Ben Harper version!!! wow

  83. p.... ....

@panzermort the first version I heard of this, and I assume he wrote it but I may be wrong, is by Ben Harper from a few years back. If his was a cover then I'm sure someone else on here will correct me.....

  84. G.... G....

Only got introduced to this feller last year by fellow scouser Tony Santemera whilst working in Minehead and staying in a caravan in Butlins.
Nice on Tony-- How I ever missed this performer I will never know.
    Brilliance.
Something else. This track and Solid Air are fantastic.
Sorry I wont get to see him live.

  85. f.... ....

check out paul taggart excuse me mr, does a nice version

  86. l.... ....

I had the pleasure of playing one of his songs for him in the Rotterdam Bar, Belfast back bar after one of his 3 appearances during the Save The Rotterdam Campaign year. WOW.... there were only about 20 people in that lock in that night!! and he summoned his guitar tech to get his martin for me with "hey.... get my dreadnought... i wanna hear this guy sing"!

  87. B.... ....

oh fuck john that was good

  88. Z.... ....

I like this because it puts the emphasis on Martyn's vocals, not his guitar playing. I think his vocals were not given the regard they deserved, and this shows what a fab singer he was.

  89. j.... m....

what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune ! think im gonna wear this video out !!!!!!!!

  90. j.... m....

what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune !

  91. h.... ....

I think this is great it makes me think of Bach Goldberg variations played by Glenn Gould when he was older cf when he first played them ( sorry if I sound a bit up myself but please comment if you know what I,m getting at). Guess what I am saying is that you can hear the soul of the man as he gets older.

  92. G.... S....

    beautiful

  93. j.... a....

    Still missing you Big Man.xx

  94. h.... ....

is that paul brady playing piano?,have you any more of this please?

    h.... ....

    its his mom

  95. d.... ....

    rip john
castlemilk comunity centre ,92 i think
he was on it , so was i .
best concert i seen him play .

    peace john .

  96. B.... ....

i'm a huge ben harper fan, I have all his albums, but I have to say this is incredible, I find this emotionally superior than the original...

  97. r.... ....

this recording is perfect as possible... very simple solo but so much feeling in it...

  98. m.... ....

    @benhall1234 you're obviously not a musician.
