John Martyn - All For The Love Of You Lyrics

I've been learning my lines
I've been chasing my time
I've been changing my mind for a while

I've been boring my friends
I've been burning both ends
I've been rounding the bend for a while

Well is it for fame and fortune
Or is it for a better place
Is it for peace and plenty
Or is it for the sacred face
It's all for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you

I've been been rolling so high
I've been meaning to try
I've been waving the lie for a while

I've been three four parts stoned
I've been out on my own
I've been wooing alone for a while

Is it for fame and fortune
And is it for a better place
Is it for peace and plenty
Or is it for the sacred face
It's all for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you

I've been learning my lines
I've been changing my mind
I've been chasing my time for a while

I've been boring my friends
I've been burning both ends
I've been rounding the bend for a while

Well is it the fame and fortune
And is it for a better place
Is it for peace and plenty
Or is it the sacred face
Is it all for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you
All for the love of you

This would sit nicely on solid air or bless the weather. So frickin good. Just goes to show how good this man was that he deemed this not to be good enough for an album. Most artists would love to write something this accomplished

My friend Mary Lee Scott has just used this song for inspiration for a love scene in her new book, 'Journey to your Love: A Story to Awaken All the Senses'. Check it out on https://www.amazon.co.uk/Journey-your-Love-Awaken-Senses-ebook/dp/B01L2G3F5W/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1473480906&sr=1-1&keywords=journey+to+your+love - I think it works rather well! Thank you, John x

What a beauty! The unreleased tracks from the 70s are some of the best in my opinion. If you haven't heard them yet, check out 'In The Evening' and 'When it's Dark' from the deluxe version of Solid Air, they don't disappoint. This man speaks to my soul in ways I don't think I'll ever understand. Rip John. X

I hear that. Been with me a long time. Whether it be Bless The Weather or Sweet Little Mystery, etc. Talks to me as well. Still a relatively unknown name in worldwide music. It's a wonder to me that his folksy stuff never became more popular. If millions could just hear his version of Singin' In The Rain, I think they'd love it. Still, such is life. Glad I grew up in England and was introduced to his beautiful music (-:

P.S. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of In The Evening. Wow! Just gorgeous!

  20. C.... F....

Something kind of unreachable in this song, difficult to explain, but still a beauty

  21. c.... r....

    no words...

  22. K.... S....

This song has a similar groove to Big Star's "Kanga Roo". Both were written/recorded around the same time.

    K.... S....

    You're right.

  23. J.... B....

    a beautiful heartache........sweet dreams

  24. D.... D....

    Awesome!!!!

  25. J.... H....

There is no other that has the charisma and great voice to portray such beautiful music as JM god bless you brother

  26. M.... ....

How this never made it onto a record is beyond me. Another achingly beautiful piece of art by John Martyn

    M.... ....

He and Bev and Nick Drake were friends. Never be another. See you on the other side. I'll just follow the music home. Tears now, so many memories. Steve Monk Moncure

Prob shite management under BA Robertson. Chris Blackwell @ Island would have pushed this one.

    M.... ....

Is that a (sarcastic) snore towards the end? Maybe he himself didn't think it was good enough - I sincerely believe it was and I agree: 'achingly beautiful' is an apt way to describe such a poignant song.

  27. A.... L....

My husband introduced me to John....I love him so much, and John! X

just beautiful :)) Love yah John.x

@johnmartyntribute Yes, I knew it mentioned 1976. That's very significant to me..guitar wise..I believe he started using the sus9 tuning then, & for *all* the songs on One World -I dont believe he used it before on any recorded song, nor used it in playing live pior to 76. But in 76 he def' was using this tuning. I think you're right, 'feel' of this-for 1 world, though it would have fitted well on Sundays Child in many ways, look at 'Lay it All Down'..a classic acoustic number and pure JM.-Ian

  37. j.... ....

@ianmcgeachy : The "Big Muff Page" say:
This song was recorded November 1976 as a home demo and released as late as September 2008, on the Ain't No Saint boxed set. One can only guess why it wasn't included on an album. My guess is that it would not have fitted well on One World, as it has a Bless The Weather/ Solid Air atmosphere.

  38. j.... ....

And a second nice upload, today seems to be a good day! ;-)

  39. i.... ....

Many thanks for this. When this came out on the boxed set it was a true undiscovered gem of JMs- a brilliant atmospheric acoustic piece by him- supposedly home recorded?..I did *not* know this was an out-take from One World. But that would make sense..I thought this was about 76/77 and also it points to the (as a guitarist) the tuning he was using- confirms for me the one he used on all of 'one world' . How did you know this was one world by the way? maybe I missed something in the boxset notes.
