John Mark McMillan - Death In His Grave Lyrics

Though the Earth Cried out for blood
Satisfied her hunger was
Her billows calmed on raging seas
Though the Earth Cried out for blood
Satisfied her hunger was
Her billows calmed on raging seas
For the souls on men she craved

Sun and moon from balcony
Turned their head in disbelief
Their precious Love would taste the sting
Disfigured and disdained

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke with keys
Of Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

So three days in darkness slept
The Morning Sun of righteousness
But rose to shame the throes of death
And over turn his rule

Now daughters and the sons of men
Would pay not their dues again
The debt of blood they owed was rent
When the day rolled a new

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke holding keys
To Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

On Friday a thief
On Sunday a King
Laid down in grief
But awoke with keys
Of Hell on that day
The first born of the slain
The Man Jesus Christ
Laid death in his grave

He has cheated
Hell and seated
Us above the fall
In desperate places
He paid our wages
One time once and for all

This song is the epitome of good, creative worship music. Since we Christians believe in a God that is full of goodness and creativity, all Christian music should be this creative and good.

I love this band and music, but am a little iffy on the symbols played in the background. What is their true meaning?

    Jacob Perez

+Daniel Johnson Thank you that makes sense.

  20. chanceysplace

I think JMM looks totally cool a true worshiper and artist. I loved it!

    Lisa Melisa

I met him in person and yes, he glowed with the Holy Spirit. I was blessed for days after a hug from him.   He honestly talks about his struggles with his own emotions or "demons," how hard it can be to live in this earthly world and still  maintain a daily personal connection with God. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have the Spirit within him, like many of us.

    agavegrove

We're all worshippers and all have the same Holy Spirit within us!

  21. Matt10L

That part at 2:41 is so great - just love it.

  22. Jean Bowser

Some of the comments, really? He was hung with theives, he became our sin. You complain about cheated versus defeated. this is awesome music. don't be a Pharisee.

@John S Jesus is King of all!! Marriage is a gift, life is sustained, Miracles are his to give, grace is his sons, Mercy is deserved by none but still given. Thank you Jesus Louie and Fern

  23. ASL

I also have a problem with "Friday a thief." Jesus was not a thief, nor was he accused of being a thief. Pilate said "I find no fault with this man." He hung with two thieves.

    Max Funk

Stole all my sin, what a thief.

    Elton Runesu

thats not the context. he described it how people saw him. on friday people saw him as a thief. he wasnt tho

    Sam Donovan

    Elton Runesu exactly.

    SnowbordrWRX

    yes...but it's a metaphor.

    Tyler Raabe

@agavegrove How about you quit reading too far into songs? The rest of us understand what he means when he says that, so quit making a big deal of it if you are incapable of deciphering his true worship message.

  24. Sebastian Altimira

Really Amazing!!!!... Lyrics are so powerfull!!! SDG

I really love this song, but I'm a little iffy on the lyrical wording "He has cheated hell" - Jesus didn't cheat anything, He defeated it. He won fair and square, He didn't barely wing it- He overwhelmed the enemy. I think cheating hell makes it sound more like He escaped. Death, sin and hell are enemies and Jesus triumphed over these things.

    J Dickson

Personally I see this as the best line of the song. Because I see it as hell is owed us for our sin. But Jesus cheated hell out of what technically rightfully belongs to it. As sinners hell deserves us, but Jesus took that away from it and gave us a way to him.
May not be right, just my humble opinion

    SnowbordrWRX

I agree...although I don't find issue with that lyric...I think from the devil's point of view, he might consider that Christ cheated him...but then again the devil tried to steal what wasn't his to begin with.

    Jeremy Gonzalez

Revisiting this comment after a couple years from my original post. Here are my thoughts now:
    1. I still love this song, I get what the meaning is conveying and I'm moved in worship.
    2. JMM is an incredible songwriter, however, some of his illustrations are mixed with figures of speech that can cause a little bit of confusion.

    3. HOWEVER, If you look up the definition of "cheated" - the two most common meanings are: *to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage* as well as *avoiding something undesirable by luck or skill*

None of the definitions attributed to the word "cheat(ed)" should be used to describe the personhood of Jesus Christ.

    Justin Bailey

    @J Dickson ... someone gets it :)

    noah dansby

Bryce O'Connor just wanted to say that in Pilots journal, he mentioned that Jesus died abnormally fast. People would hang up on the cross for days before bleeding out. When Jesus said “it is finished” he gave his own life. He fulfilled the ultimate sacrifice and had finished what he came to do. Dont have the exact sources but have been listening to John MacArthur sermons. He’s a doctrinal pastor that uses other sources to prove the Bible’s truths. If u made it this far thank you God bless ya❤️
