John Hiatt - Lipstick Sunset Lyrics

There's a lipstick sunset
Smeared across the August sky
There's a bitter sweet perfume
Hanging in the fields
The creek is running high

And I left my lover waiting
In the dawn somewhere to wonder why
By the end of the day
All her sweet dreams would fade
To a lipstick sunset

Well, a radio was playing
And that ol' summer heat was on the rise
I just had to get away
Before some sad old song
Brought tears to my eyes

And Lord I couldn't tell her
That her love was only killing me
By the end of the day
All her sweet dreams would fade
To a lipstick sunset

Well it's pretty as a picture baby
Red and blushing just before the night
Maybe love's like that for me
Maybe I can only see
As you take away the light

So hold me in the darkness
We can dream about the cool twilight
'Til the dawning of the day
When I make my getaway
To a lipstick sunset

There will come another day
When I make my getaway
To a lipstick sunset

There will come another day
Then I'll make my getaway
To a lipstick sunset

I played this song and some of "Slow Turning" to my daughter, who was born in 2000, and asked her when the songs were written and performed. She couldn't date them, said they are "timeless". "Bring the Family" is a monumental achievement and "Lipstick Sunset" among the crown jewels in an album full of them.

Thank you, JH, for sharing your gift.

The truly amazing thing about this album is that John had just finished cleaning himself up from years of drug abuse and alcohol. He owed the record label another album and called these guys up they said "Sure man!" They went into a studio and cut this in a week. One week. It was recorded "direct to disc" which means they used no tape or digital recording equipment. They were plugged directly into the board which was then fed into a record cutting lathe which cut the master on a copper disc. That disc is used to make the stampers that make the vinyl record. That means NO overdubs, NO "we'll fix it in the mix", NO Pro Tools, NO AutoTune. They had one take for everybody to get it right with NO mistakes - and they did it. On a really good turntable and stereo system this record will make you stare at the speakers in disbelief. Close your eyes and you can tell precisely where each musician is standing. This is how music used to be performed and recorded. Until you hear this on an analog record - you haven't really heard it. I have played this for friends and they were speechless when it finished.

Yeah! It is a masterpiece. Isn't it wonderful to be alive during the time of John Hiatt? !!!!

Correction.."Direct to disc" means it was a digital recording.

  10. R.... L....

I love Hiatt's singing... I also like this acoustic rock style and am surprised it doesn't dominate the airwaves. Like many people I have a hard time listening to radio. If it was this type of recording I would listen again.

    R.... L....

LOFL. "Dominate the airways"......the airways are dominated by bullshit
