John Denver - Wild Flowers In A Mason Jar Lyrics

January, back in '55, we rode a Greyhound bus through the Georgia midnight.
Grandpa was sleeping and the winter sky was clear.
We hit a bump and his head jerked back a little and he mumbled something,
he woke up smiling, but his eyes were bright with tears.
He said, "I dreamed I was back on the farm,
20 years have passed, boy, the memory still warms me. Wildflowers in a mason jar"

He told me those old stories 'bout that one-room cabin in Kentucky.
The smell of the rain and the warm earth in his hands.
He slowly turned and stared outside, his face was mirrored in the window,
and his reflection flew across the moonlit land.
And he dreamed he was back on the farm.
Tilts his head and listens to the early sound of morning, wildflowers in a mason jar.

An old man and an eight-year-old boy rolling down that midnight highway,
Kentucky memories from a winter Georgia night.
I started drifting off and Grandpa tucked his coat around me,
I think I tried to smile as I slowly closed my eyes.
And I dreamed I was with him on the farm.
Grandpa, I can hear the evening wind out in the corn, wildflowers in a mason jar,
wildflowers in a mason jar, wildflowers in a mason jar, and the bus rolled through the night.

I love this song. Nearly makes me cry every time I hear it. But whomever put the slideshow together for the music has clearly never been to Kentucky. The song and slides are disconnected. Find slides or go to Kentucky and take pics to match the song.

I grew up in Huron, South Dakota and we had flowers in a mason jar because we had no vases. Good times in the country.  From one fellow S.D. to another. Thank you.

  28. R.... ....

I took a listen to him. He has a wonderful voice! Thanks for sharing.

  29. H.... ....

Larry Jon Wilson also did a respectable job with this song (it's on YouTube as well). However, I don't know if the writer (Dennis Lind) ever recorded it, or if it was a "work for hire". It's still a great song, though.

  30. R.... ....

I agree with you! Thanks for stopping by.

  31. R.... ....

I did go take a listen. Mel McDaniel had such a soothing, pure voice. He did a great job singing this song. Thanks for sharing that with me. Have a wonderful day and keep cool...I am guessing it's hot where you are as well.

  36. R.... ....

my apologies for being slow to respond. They had a dairy farm in Winner, SD. It was so much fun to get up and watch my uncle milk the cows by hand. We took baths in a tub on the back porch and slept 3 to a bed. It was a wonderful time. You can imagine our excitement when he got the electric milkers in the mid-70's. Such good memories.

  37. R.... ....

Thanks for your kind words. God bless your Grandpa. I have no doubt of the hard working man he must have been. It is the kind of song that just warms your heart. I hope you get back to Kentucky. I drove through the state last year...absolutely beautiful!!

You're vwelcome...thanks for commenting. I feel the same way and wonder about the songs that could have been.

  55. R.... ....

Thanks so much for your kind comments. The song sure takes you back in time, doesn't it?

  56. R.... ....

Thanks for the comment. I had fun making it and finding just the right pictures to use. I bought the "Some Days are Diamonds" album when it came out on vinyl in 1981. There are some really great songs on there that never made it as singles. I have all of his albums on CD now, but I still hang on to my vinyl albums....nostalgia, I guess. Take care.

  57. R.... ....

It's always fun to hear from other people who love his music as much as I do. Thanks for commenting. ;-)
