John Denver - We Don't Live Here No More Lyrics

Make believe you're on a boat without water around.
Picture yourself at a circus without any clowns.
Pretend that you're on a highway without any end.
Then empty the ashtray, sweep up the floor, put a lock on your door.
If somebody calls in the morning, just say we don't live here no more.

Draw me a picture of an island without any seas.
Show me a map of the whole world without boundaries.
Build me a home without windows or doors to go in.
Then empty the ashtray, sweep up the floor, put a lock on your door.
If somebody calls in the morning, just say we don't live here no more.

Dream of the time when the tides ebbing now rise again.
Then you will know that to die is not really to end.
Living and dying are both your most intimate friends.
So empty the ashtray, sweep up the floor, put a lock on your door.
If somebody calls in the morning, just say we don't live here no more.
If somebody calls in the morning, just say we don't live here no more.

John Denver We Don't Live Here No More Comments
  1. R.... D....

John was a huge part of my life when I lived in Colorado in the 70s. He was there in my triumphs and my tragedies. His voice takes me back to those warm halcyon days of youth. RIP my friend.

John was a big beatles (and indeed Lennon fan), i really would've liked to have seen this song hit the popularity of Imagine. The two songs are strikingly similar

Actually, i would've also liked to hear him cover imagine.

I am, in general, more of a rock / heavier music fan. But John Denver is one of my unabashed favourites. Incredible music

So true...our time here is fleeting. Saw JD at an outdoor concert in the 70' s and he performed many of these songs. A great memory.

Sweet sadness has its own beauty. John carries the feelings in the clarity of his voice.

Written by Bill Danoff.  John heard it and recorded it.
For those who were the same age as John, we went through those times together.
Found love, lost love.  Love forever, even if no longer together.

    T.... T....

Yes... where have they all gone... those we loved and were loved by...

    T.... T....

Away.....that's all there is to say...

My favorite John Denver song. The reality of life and the facades that face us each day. Wake up to the spiritual aspect in the world and stop getting caught up in the media and celebrity fantasy world.

That may be a reflection of your own personal depression. The first two verses demonstrate the emptiness of life without the converse ie; a boat without water, an island without sea, a home without windows or doors etc: The tides ebbing out rise again ergo; to die is not really the end but a new beginning as life and death are one as when a flower dies a new flower is born. In death we transcend the mundane and the banal - moving on to whatever chance has to offer beyond this life experience. The point is we don't live here no more because we have moved on through the life and death portal. I don't find it depressing at all and most likely find it to be another aspect of life that most people don't see - most are too busy gadding about trying to get rich and betting all their chips on this earth plane. Perhaps the musical score which contains many minor chords relays a sense of melancholy and this is what you are focusing on. Maybe you would be less depressed listening to Barry Manolo. Personally I'd rather be deaf. The song is for the most part off the beaten path and not giddy like Thank God I'm a Country Boy or Country Road. Denver had a keen sense of the spiritual side of life and to deny that facet of life will only lead one to the delusions and illusions of grandeur this plastic world has to offer. Hope you feel better.

    @parinellotf  Well put.

Excellent viewpoint on the song. I agree this song is not a happy one, yet I find it so beautiful. It's strange how some people only hear the sadness, but not the peace and the beauty of the song. John Denver was able to see and project ALL or the emotions of this life. Not just the happy ones. Because that is not reality; that is not how life really is. Yes, there is extreme joy to be had in this life. But there is also extreme grief and sadness. It makes no sense to deny the feelings of hurt and loss do not exist. Of course it makes no sense to wallow in pity either. But we should acknowledge that there is sadness and learn to embrace those feelings because they WILL come as surely as death itself will come. Again, you expressed your thoughts so perfectly. Just wanted to say I enjoyed reading them and to say....thank you.
