John Denver - Bread And Roses Lyrics

As we go marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
a million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray
are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses.
For the people hear us singing, bread and roses, bread and roses.

As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men.
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweetened from birth until life closes.
Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses.

As we go marching, marching, we bring the greater days
for the rising of the women means the rising of the race .
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
but the sharing of life's glories, bread and roses, bread and roses.

John Denver Bread And Roses Comments
  1. T.... ....

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill-lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing, "Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses."
As we come marching, marching, we battle, too, for men--
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes--
Hearts starve as well as bodies: Give us Bread, but give us Roses!
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
    Go crying through our singing their ancient song of Bread;
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew--
Yes, bread we fight for--but we fight for Roses, too.
As we come marching, marching, we bring the Greater Days --
The rising of the women means the rising of the race --
No more the drudge and idler ten that toil where one reposes
But sharing of life's glories: Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses!

This history and meaning behind this song is a really fascinating read. :3

Agreed. Much to the dismay of conservatives, America has a long history of socialist activism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_Roses

It's an Irish uillean pipe, not one of those horrible Scottish things!

  11. J.... G....

as I've mentioned when you Google search for the song and the credits for the song it's says uileann pipes. if you say that it's highland bagpipes maybe it's the case. anyway it's a trivial matter there are better things in life to worry about, it's a good song let's move on we've all expressed an opinion or two had a bit of fun. good evening to one and all.

    J.... G....

+Jason Gibson I'm not saying it was the Highland Bagpipes. I agree with you that it is the Uilleann Pipes. I was only trying to clarify what was being said by you. The Uilleann Pipes are one type of bagpipes so to refer to them as bagpipes is not incorrect. There are hundreds of types of bagpipes from all over the world. When you said it wasn't the bagpipes what you should have said is that it wasn't the Highland Bagpipes. I hope this makes sense, but you are right, it is trivial.

  12. J.... G....

well I'm only going on what's actually in the credits of the song and it actually mentions uileann pipes as I said look it up and you'll see that it's the uileann pipes not bagpipes.

    J.... G....

+Jason Gibson I think what you mean is that it is not the "Highland Bagpipes"

    J.... G....

    Could be Northumbrian small pipes?

  13. J.... G....

To the people who have made the comments about that it's bagpipes in the song you are wrong. it's actually uileann pipes a much better sounding instrument & harder to play than bagpipes. How do I know just Google and you'll see that it's the uileann pipes & they are played by a woman on this track.

    J.... G....

+Jason Gibson "Bagpipes" is a general term as there are hundreds of types of bagpipes from around the world. But thank you for clearing up what kind of bagpipes are being played.

the very good singer is Cassandra who was then his wife

  15. L.... M....

oh my god...is that him playing the bagpipes :D if so...thats amazing!!!

    L.... M....

+Ouatfan Chelsea I could be wrong but I don't think that's him playing the pipes.

I like the bagpipes in this cover version, I haven't found a studio version by songwriter Mimi Farina on YT, but I did find a live duet with her sister, and a great version by Judy Collins. I put all 3 and this one in my Denver playlist. Thanks for the upload!

    t.... ....

Actually, I would suggest that JD's version is ~NOT~a cover version, since he created a whole new melody for it -- listen to his version just before or just after listening to the more common Mimi Farina / Joan Baez / Judy Collins / (etc.) version and you'll see that it has a totally different tune. [I guess, in a sense, for lyrics, it is a "cover version" of the original James Oppenheim poem from 1911, of which John used verses 1, 2, and 4.]

    t.... ....

Actually its not bagpipes but 'uilleann pipes'. beautiful version of a beautiful song.
