I heard this version first but I prefer hearing Lucinda Williams singing and playing the song. I can't separate John Anderson from that damned Swingin' song. In Swingin' there is that girl named Charlotte. This was 1982 and my parents had divorced and into my LIFE came this woman named Charlotte. She became my dad's fourth and final wife. I just hated that woman, her and my older brother. That divorce tore my family to pieces. My dad's side of the family disowned me and suddenly I had no relationship with my dad and my older brother would be his favorite until we died since we had different mothers. So Charlotte on the swing just a swingin' had a very painful connection to it. It was a very painful time for me for about a decade. I really wasn't released from my dad's emotional grip until he died suddenly in 1999. For me it was a relief. I never looked back. My father just became a real bastard to me. Sides were chosen and none of us could feel any other way about it. My older brother stood to inherit dad's business and he was the first born. All of this is connected to Swingin' and freaking John Anderson. Jeez. It's like hearing a song you used to like when you liked a girl who broke your heart. Some songs just remind us of painful times.
