John Anderson - Down In Tennessee Lyrics
I talked to your sister last night on the telephone
You know she always thought pretty well of me
She said that the wedding went fine
And you were up in New York on your honeymoon
Tonight I'm down, in Tennessee
I got that letter you wrote, it tore me up
But I don't have anyone to blame but me
I had it all for a while but like everything else I messed it up
And tonight I'm down, in Tennessee
It's blue tonight and gettin' bluer
But I'm in the state that I deserve to be
Without you I just can't see things ever looking up for me
I'm so down, in Tennessee
I hope he gives you that home and family
I just want to say if by chance you are ever this way, look me up
I'll be down, in Tennessee
It's blue tonight and getting bluer
I'm in the state that I deserve to be
Without you I just can't see things ever looking up for me
I'm so down, in Tennessee
I'm so down, in Tennessee
I'm gonna be down, in Tennessee

John Anderson Down In Tennessee Comments
Tennessee, God's country,@ he sings it like it is.
So GOOD
One of his best for sure.
You've not messed it up. Still love you and always will too. You are all I want!!!! Great song.
This is perfect for my 20 year marriage ending. “Hope you’re happy with him”. Then he left 6 months later.. Good riddance Christine.
I like both versions, Johns and Mark's
Steve Wariner has a good version of this song, as well.
4 years later; I’m still having to get my John Anderson fix... lol
Steve Wariner does this song better.
But John rocks it too
Another real heartbreaker.
Wow. Another super charged song by john. Im speechless. First time hearing this. Better late than never.

1 of johns greatest songs,a very sad song, but sounds wonderful
They call todays country music country. That John Anderson song was then and still now what a song should sound and have the meaning to it . Todays country artist and producers dont have a clue.
Nothing like home! ;) Tennessee will always be my home! ;)
Alexis Jenkins u damn rite
I opened up for this Guy. Unbelievable, unique and super nice!

Tonight Im down ;/
I'm so down in Soddy-
this music is in my soul and will always be a part of me
John has had a lot of great songs but none better than this one, to me.
I love this one also but, my favorite of his is Till I get used to the pain.
Man if I had all the beer and gas money I SPENT while listening to this damn song I could build a new house. Great drinking song!
I just got through traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee on the way back to North Carolina yesterday. I heard some John Anderson on the radio while passing through and I immediately thought when I got home to find his stuff on youtube. Glad I did and thanks country radio for still playing him once in a blue moon to remind me how great all his music is and was. Absolutely the best.
I think this is my all time John Anderson favorite.
A perfect song.
That is shit
Gosto muito dele, é ótimo.
John hit #12 in Billboard, 2-15-86. God bless you, Steve, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!
This is the guy that called out iggy
one of the best voices that ever sang... right up there with vern gosdin
Best voices ever don't forget George jones
@Darryl Pursley You got that right!
+Leah Duke I'd throw Gene Watson in there with them, especially live.
Amen to that, brother! He was always way under-rated. I wonder what ever happened to Earl Thomas Conley... He's another great voice.
This man is in my opinion underated. He ranks right up there with Vern Gosdin, and Waylon Jennings
really theirs 3 idiots out there that don't like this song. Go back to rap and leave us alone
Time is such a sweet thing Jim. I feel your pain and happiness at the same time!
Im down in alabama I hope soon for both of us
Way too bad country don't sound like this anymore....Blake Shelton don't rate a pimple on John Anderson's ass..
Rodney Wilkerson You speak the truth sir!!!!
John is one of the purist vocalists in country music history in my opinion. I love his inflection.
dang i love this song, it wasnt on that purple cassette was it? lol man when i was 12 this guys songs were the soundtrack of my life, sure i was jammin clay walker, rick trevino, alan jackson, clint black, travis tritt, rhett atkins mark chesnutt, david lee murphy billy dean, tracy byrd, strait, wade hayes, and those other guys but at that specific time in the early 90's he was the master! (the early 90's was a great time for music in all genres especially country music
@rdjones92 I am 45 my friend. These were some of the earler songs that brought me to country music in the first place.
@weslyjames Wesly, I remember the same thing. We may be around the same age with some of the same experiences. The exact same thing that this song speaks about happened to me. Although not in Tennessee.
just discovered this song by John Anderson.....every song I find by him is better than the last!
Takes me back to cutting the grass when I was a teenager listing to this tape in my walkman. Now tonight i just smile as I drift back in time thinking about all the life I have lived between that time and now.
I dont ever remember liking an artist so much his voice and yes this song I caught every dxouble meaning !
The pride of apopka,florida
I'll never forget you, One day we'll meet in Tennessee. Still love you after all these years even though your so far away.
I can remember like it was yesterday, carrying this cassette into my best friends house (Where my new bride and I went for dinner) and saying..."Hey man, have you heard John's new record"...that's what we called him..."John". Well, he IS from Florida! And so are we! We sat in my friends house and listened to this as intently as we ever listened to any album we ever listened to (Yes, including Hank Jr)
"I got that letter you wrote...it tore me up! But, I don't have anyone to blame but me!
"like everything else, I messed it up"
from a songwriters point of view, its the greatest. I love the double meanings. Down in Tenn, as in down in the dumps, and down as in south of her in New York. In the state that I deserve to be, state of mind, and state of Tenn. Other doubles, listen for them, enjoy,
Mine too, I don't know why they havn't release it again, I think it is his best album.
My fav John Anderson album. Cassete is long gone (
