Joel, Billy - The Ballad Of Billy The Kid Lyrics

From a town known as Wheeling, West Virginia
Rode a boy with a six-gun in his hand
And his daring life of crime
Made him a legend in his time
East and west of the Rio Grande

Well, he started with a bank in Colorado
In the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid
And his age and his size
Took the teller by surprise
And the word spread of Billy the Kid

Well, he never traveled heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put many older guns to shame
And he never had a sweetheart
And he never had a home
But the cowboy and the rancher knew his name

Well, he robbed his way from Utah to Oklahoma
And the law just could not seem to track him down
And it served his legend well
For the folks, they'd love to tell
'Bout when Billy the Kid came to town

Well, one cold day a posse captured Billy
And the judge said, "String 'im up for what he did!"
And the cowboys and their kin
Like the sea came pourin' in
To watch the hangin' of Billy the Kid

Well, he never traveled heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put many older guns to shame
And he never had a sweetheart
But he finally found a home
Underneath the boothill grave that bears his name

From a town known as Oyster Bay, Long Island
Rode a boy with a six-pack in his hand
And his daring life of crime
Made him a legend in his time
East and west of the Rio Grande

  54. D.... ....

I think this may have been my first CD. I got it free with a shirt and a oldies compilation CD when I bought a small wooden CD holder.

  55. N.... H....

"He never had a sweetheart, but he finally found a home, underneath the boot hill grave that bore his name" is one of the sadder lines in a song that I've heard. I know the real Billy was much different than this romanticized version, but the idea of a lonely kid who never had a home until he died is quite sad.

  56. R.... R....

I wore this album out...and a few needles.

  57. F.... H....

Thanks to my parents for owning every single Billy Joel album

  58. A.... C....

  63. H.... H....

Not for nothing did a young Billy Joel attend Julliard School of Music.

  64. C.... t....

is it weird that this just made me write a western song lol

  65. c.... s....

  66. T.... A....

Great song....his history is a little off, Billy was not hung, he was killed by Pag Garrett. That aside, good stuff.

  67. J.... E....

  86. D.... B....

    FAMILY GUY

  87. J.... L....

As a New Mexican this song offends me! Not bad tho

  88. S.... ....

It makes sense that this isn't historically accurate. People forget that this is a song about the _legend_ of Billy the Kid, not the person.

  89. s.... ....

Great sounding song but complete bullshit lyrics. Why do we rewrite history and glorify thugs and murderers in song ?. How would adolf the kid sound ?.

  90. W.... ....

Great song, great album, but the artwork leaves a lot to be desired. :\

  91. s.... ....

Has anyone invented an orchestra machine yet ?. Might be just the thing to liven up my karaoke.

  95. K.... V....

OK a huge family guy fan.. and if that's how you came here, so be it, but explore yourself some joel.... brilliant artist!

  96. J.... W....

I’m here because i’m preparing my mind body and spirit for Red Dead Redemption 2.

  97. A.... H....

Did Billy Joel actually read a single fact about Billy the Kid, he wasn't from West Virginia, he was the son of a New York Irish Immigrant Prostitute and moved to New Mexico.
He also never robbed a bank

    A.... H....

Billy Joel even states that it wasn't historical accurate. I guess he just thought the song would be better that way.
