Joe Jackson - Happy Loving Couples Lyrics
I've just been to see my best friend
He's found another girl
Says she's just about the best thing
In the whole damn world
What the little lady's done for me?"
Says it like he thinks I'm blind
But the things that you see
Ain't necessarily the things you can find
Happy loving couples make it look so easy
Happy loving couples always talk so kind
'Til the time that I can do my dancing with a partner
Those happy couples ain't no friends of mine
When it comes to girls
Happy couples say
I must live in a lonely world
Wanna be, wanna really be
What my friends pretend to be
Be it in my own good time
Being kind to myself
'Til I become one of two of a kind
But those happy loving couples make it look so easy
Happy loving couples always talk so kind
'Til the time that I can do my dancing with a partner
Those happy couples ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You know what I mean
Happy loving couples
In matching lamb turtle-neck sweaters
Reading Ideal Homes magazine
Yeah!
Wanna be, wanna really be
What my friends pretend to be
Be it in my own good time
Being kind to myself
'Til I become one of two of a kind
But those happy loving couples make it look so easy
Happy loving couples always talk so kind
'Til the time that I can do my dancing with a partner
Those happy couples ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
You ain't no friends of mine
Right, that's enough

A song for us singles. I'm about it!
Go Joe! Bring it bro!
"...right, that's enough."
When I first heard this today on the radio, I thought it was Elvis Costello. I love this style. Unabashedly pop, but with an edge and intelligence.
3 people are fucking happy loving couples
always loved those great up front baselines ...
I don't know how many times I referenced this damn song to my friends who are in relationships that somehow have lost all ability to think and act as an independent beings. Thanks Joe for putting some much needed spotlight on the issue.
olDirtyPastor old is nothing but a perspective, so maybe clean up your pastoral act and love a bit more? 😏 nothing but love and respect to you (and yours, now?) 💌

Eternal Perspective thanks for being you
One of the great things about this album is that most of the songs are textbook examples of timelessness (with humorously dated exceptions like 'Sunday Papers'). The lyrics pertain to the common man (and I stress 'man'), while the ubiquitous four-part rock ensemble provides the music. It's not my favorite style, but the execution of Joe's vision is golden, and he has all my respect for it (and I quite enjoy it, too).
