Joan Baez - The Unquiet Grave Lyrics

Cold blows the wind to my true love,
And gently drops the rain.
I've never had but one true love,
And in green-wood he lies slain.

I'll do as much for my true love,
As any young girl may,
I'll sit and mourn all on his grave,
For twelve months and a day.

And when twelve months and a day was passed,
The ghost did rise and speak,
"Why sittest thou all on my grave
And will no let me sleep?"

"Go fetch me water from the desert,
And blood from out the stone,
Go fetch me milk from a fair maid's breast
That young man never has known."

"How oft on yonder grave, sweetheart,
Where we were want to walk,
The fairest flower that e'er I saw
Has withered to a stalk."

"A stalk has withered and dead, sweetheart,
The flower will never return,
And since I've lost my own true love,
What can I do but yearn."

"When will we meet again, sweetheart,
When will we meet again?"
"When the autumn leaves that fall from the trees
Are green and spring up again."

Joan Baez The Unquiet Grave Comments
  1. E.... ....

Joan Baez has a beautiful voice, but this folksong just doesn't fit her and vice versa

  2. D.... P....

Beatyful song in ver clear.. voice

  3. S.... ....

Horrible voice. Can't stand the constant trill a lot of female singers use to try masking their lameness. It makes it even worse. Marys.Momma in Yahoo answers said it best 9 yrs ago "An occasional use of a controlled vibrato can express emotion. Too much or too often, and the notes sound wobbly or unsupported."

    S.... ....

You know I would actually take this more serious if you didn't sound so uneducated by using descriptions like 'lameness'

  4. F.... A....

I came here because I learned about this ballad during my "introduction to english literature" class and this woman's voice is just amazing!

  5. D.... H....

    Not Brown Enough

  6. p.... b....

    may i say joan sings
this ballad first class but it not as good as luke kelly he was just first class

  7. G.... M....

Being one that was there, and can remember it! Joan still holds that magic of the "60's" we folk still hold dear- bless you Joan- better to march against war than to war!

  8. K.... P....

For some of the younger listeners, you must understand the uniqueness of Joan's voice, so pure, clear and high, she captured the essences of the early Peace movement, a singular voice standing out from so many others. While others may have sung the same song and done an excellent job she still shines brightest because of the purity of her interpretation-

  9. R.... T....

Ween did it so much better.

    R.... T....

Richard Tucker listened to ween:really horrible

    R.... T....

Richard Tucker who the fuck is ween? Some shitty millennial shit band F them

    R.... T....

RichoRosai hey guinea wop dago duechebag you can take all your shitty comments about your shirt band ween to a shitty ween page now beat it wanna be mafioso boy

    R.... T....

F er ween who they MUST SUCK EVEN MORE THAN TRAIN AEROSMITH MANSON AND BONJERKY

    R.... T....

    @RichoRosai What a stupid remark

  10. H.... ....

This performance is so beautiful. I came to know this song because it used in one of Penny Dreadful's episodes, and also in the trailer for the second season of the show, albeit with a distinctively more somber mood. D.R.

    H.... ....

@Hasfast same here. sounded so beautiful

    H.... ....

Hasfast you millennials get your music from lame millennial tv shows how boring

    H.... ....

    Hasfast me too 🖤

    H.... ....

@DealReal12 Doesn't matter where people discover good music, does it? If it opens them up to searching and finding things like this then what exactly is your problem?
The only lame thing here is you and your comment ;)

  11. F.... D....

I love Joan but Irish singers do this song justice

    F.... D....

    lol go fuck yourself

    F.... D....

@Museegirl0018 You said the f word

    F.... D....

Flip D Switch it is not an Irish song !

    F.... D....

@F er It's a song composed by someone from the UK...

  12. T.... G....

I love Joan Baez, she had and has an amazing voice, but I think she would have been an even bigger and brighter light than she was if she had cooled off on the vibrato a bit. Beautiful song this.

    T.... G....

From what I gathered over the years, the vibrato wasn't anything she really tried to produce. Voices are best when they are allowed to do what seems most natural from them.

    T.... G....

Trev Gibb I LOVE HER VIBRATO SO THERE!

  13. P.... D....

Bought the DVD 2 years ago. 1965. Such a beautiful voice, not always suited to a folk song, but this time it is!

  14. I.... Z....

I prefer the version done by Ween (retitled Cold Blows The Wind). It has such a dark tone, really suits the lyrics better

    I.... Z....

Completely disagree. The ween one is not up to standard

    I.... Z....

F er me too! Joan is the BEST!

    I.... Z....

MesaXI Mesa XI Ween freaking who? Some shithead new millennial band. F them.

    I.... Z....

    @DealReal12 You good, bro...?

  15. G.... M....

I purchased Joan's (first?) LP in the very eary 1960's.
What a voice for folk music!!

  16. A.... B....

Beautiful song that conveys such an emotions story of love loss and mourning the loss of your true love.

  17. R.... S....

I actually used to believe she used too much vibrato, but it grows on you.

    R.... S....

Then you really need to listen to more Native American's singing, that's how it's done....https://www.britannica.com/art/Native-American-music

    R.... S....

@Too Far Well......its an English (as in UK) folk song from end of the 13th century. I doubt the unknown author had native american singing in his mind when he composed this song

  18. j.... ....

2 scoops is right. The song is nice, but I cannot listen and concentrate because of the vibrato.Fans might say: that's her, but I don't like it.Her sister-in-Art (also American)Judy Collins is vocally speaking a far better example. Just imagine you have listen to 12-20 songs on LP/CD with this vibrato in every song...one song will do.

  19. 2.... S....

too much vibrato. she uses it on 90% of the notes. the short-duration steps don't need any. it sounds ridiculous haha

    2.... S....

    2 Scoops rather stupid remark

    2.... S....

    I fully agree

    2.... S....

@F er I presume the 'stupid' thing is that he as another opinion than you?

  20. B.... D....

I can only say that her voice is travelling through out our galaxie

  21. T.... M....

Birds in the sky must envy this voice, sweeter than heaven itself, pure class, she makes it all appear simple, a superstar, thumbs up cheers for this post

  22. o.... ....

    te adoro hija de puta

  23. F.... H....

    No luke Kelly but pretty

    F.... H....

Frank Healy All those stupid comparisons I like the version of Luke very much but don't show off with your limited musical taste.9

  24. J.... H....

Don't know why the rarings have been disabled but I love this video. It's a beautiful recording as only Joan can do it. Thank you.

  25. e.... ....

A lot of singers have come and gone since the sixties, but there has never been anyone who has come anywhere near her. She is unique. I love the quality of this video. The black and white makes the image look more 40s or 50s than the 60s, and makes her look native American, which I think she is (partly). The earthy browns framing the image add to this native American feeling. And there she is, singing a traditional English ballad!

  26. m.... ....

@beebscooke Check out Luke Kellys version of same

  27. r.... c....

i always come back to this when i need a FIX of perfection!!!

  28. r.... c....

    perfect

  29. L.... J....

I wish 12 months was enough.....

    @wthight123
    you are so right!
i am a classical singer and singer teacher and expose my pupils and choirs to JB, Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton! These 16 year olds are so into old vinyl now and love the protest messages behind many of the songs!
keep enjoying! look out for my videos (beebscooke( no idea quite how to share them on here!
    becca :)

  31. r.... c....

    beautiful

  32. A.... M....

    Dulce mirada y angelical voz.

  33. w.... ....

What a singular talent. This performance captures her early magic better than any other video, in my opinion. Notice her face between 0:16 and 0:20 as she physically and emotionally disappears into the song and stays there until after the end. A rare and profound artist.
