Joan Baez - Fennario Lyrics

As we marched down to Fennario,
As we marched down to Fennario,
Our captain fell in love with a lady like a dove.
They call her by name pretty Peggy-o.

What will your mother think pretty Peggy-o?
What will your mother think pretty Peggy-o?
What will your mother think when she hears the guineas clink,
The soldiers all marchin' before you-o?

In a carriage you will ride, pretty Peggy-o.
In a carriage you will ride, pretty Peggy-o.
In a carriage you will ride with your true love by your side,
As fair as any maiden in the are-o.

Come skippin' down the stair, pretty Peggy-o.
Come skippin' down the stair, pretty Peggy-o.
Come skippin' down the stair combin' back your yellow hair,
And bid farewell to sweet William-o.

Sweet William is dead, pretty Peggy-o.
Sweet William is dead, pretty Peggy-o.
Sweet William is dead, and he died for a maid,
The fairest maid in the are-o.

If ever I return, pretty Peggy-o.
If ever I return, pretty Peggy-o.
If ever I return all your cities I will burn,
Destroying all the ladies in the are-o.
Destroying all the ladies in the are-o.

    What a beautiful song

  11. A.... M....

I’ve been all over this country, and I’ve never seen a place called Fennario.

  12. G.... L....

Great song. Started out as an old British marching song about a British soldier and his girlfriend Peggy, near the Scottish town of Fyvie. Song got to America and was transformed into FENNARIO, sung by Dylan, Baez, the Dead and countless others over the generations. Just like an old British drinking song which became our" Star Spangled Banner".

  13. t.... w....

A friend of mine told me about this song.   He said that it was Pretty Peggy-O.   I looked it up and it came to Fennario.   Bob Dylan did a song Pretty Peggy-O.   This is such a great song.   I may have heard it just once a long time ago.   Now I feel like I missed hearing a good song.   Well, I'll just have to hear some more!

  14. G.... L....

Fennario=Fyvie , a small town in Scotland its original setting +best guess of musicologists

  15. P.... ....

I was stationed in Thailand, 1974-1975 and this was in the base library. I liked it and got it on a low quality cassette but have not heard it in probably 40 years or more. So nice to find it here and such good, clear quality. Thank you for putting it there.

  16. F.... Y....

the Grateful Dead do a shit version of this song (sorry dead-heads)

  17. P.... T....

This song is called Pretty Peggy O.

  18. R.... H....

Decent. I love the Dead's version, especially https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6kT4pItzj0&index=151&list=LLtIr4PEJOalZiNygqxoZnfg

  19. M.... ....

Notice: Every American folk song will be found somewhere in some Scotch, Irish, or English ballad.

    M.... ....

What about the ones of African origin?

    M.... ....

not so much folk, more blues and jazz

    M.... ....

You mean Scottish. Scotch is a drink!

  20. D.... A....

The voice so pure and rich, I saw her many times --------also she could sing at a Peace Rally and she did not need to be mike.
    Bless you Miss Joannie

  21. L.... P....

Did Joan change the chronology of the verses?

  22. J.... M....

Yeah whoever said this was written by bob Dylan needs to do some research, thanks to whoever provided the details below obvious a very old Scottish or scots Irish ballad. And it's not about credit or money, it is about preserving the material in one format or another as an important cultural legacy.

    J.... M....

It's a Scottish ballad about the thwarted love between a soldier and a girl, also known by the names Bonnie Lass O' Fyvie or The Maid of Fife.

    J.... M....

Many people unfamiliar with Joan Baez and her music assume, wrongly, that she became famous as an interpreter of Dylan. In fact, she was already a folk legend from her interpretation of old songs before she covered many tunes of the great ones, Ochs and Dylan, and in addition, wrote a good many great ones herself.

    J.... M....

This song was popular among the soldiers during The War Between the States.

    J.... M....

I went to a Baez concert back in the day and she had a surprise guest singer, Bob Dylan. In those days they had a receiving line, when people weren't crazy, and I got to meet both of them. What a joy.

  23. J.... M....

Pretty sure somewhere in Ireland - this is a scots Irish or old Country song hundreds of years old which were preserved in Appalachia and 1060s folk helped make these songs widely heard and recorded. Thanks Joan for your service to the people of the hills

  24. e.... s....

    where's fannerio

  25. M.... L....

Linda voz! straightforward precise Folkpicking guitar too!

  26. B.... L....

I love this.  I had this record back in l969  Gorgeous guitar playing, and I learned to play it on my guitar.  At that time, I was in love with William iVEY lONG, who was a friend of mine at the College of William and Mary in Virginia   I adapted the words to include "William Ivey O."  I rewrote the whole song and made it about William Ivey Long, yes, the same man who is the famous designer on Broadway now.

    B.... L....

    +Buck Lilli
    Great story.

    B.... L....

    Hah nice L in l969
reminds me of learning to type of my dads old typewriter

    B.... L....

Maybe my fav. Joan song...close to it anyway....and, Joan, I forgive you for nearly running me down on your Harley, in the snow, outside the Woodstock Diner in late De. 1963.

    B.... L....

Which album is this from? Do you remember?

  27. z.... ....

and you are right tierney. he did not record "scarborough fair" he just ripped off the tune and used it in "Girl from the north country". the patriot game text was written by dominic behan. brendan behans brother. the tune is much older and is called "The merry month of May". google "the Patriot game", and read the wikipedia on the song

  28. z.... ....

so tierney you wanna fight!! "God on your side" was originally and still is an irish poem/com rebel song named "The patriot game". it is ok to borrow a tune, but NOT to claim credit for it, and rake in the money involved.

  29. b.... ....

the voice and the fingerpicking always convince me that this is my fave of any I have heard.

    b.... ....

    I absolutely agree. So soothing!!

    b.... ....

Me too! Great voice & nice fingerpicking!

  30. z.... ....

sentryasspy where is your head?? it is a scottish folk-song with several versions and tunes. bob dylan has nothing to do with it!! He ripped off and scrounged every song he could get his hands on. "god on your side" and "scarborough fair" are prime excambles of that. I wrote on my guitarcase many years ago "Dylan is a ......." and I will stand by that!!

  31. B.... ....

Also recommend a listen to Muckram Wakes, "Peg of Derby" and Old Blind Dogs, "Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie"

  32. m.... f....

This song is called Pretty Peggy-O and it was written by Bob Dylan. :/

    m.... f....

Fennario/Peggy-O/The Maid of Fife is a traditional Scottish song

    m.... f....

its a traditional scottish song called "Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie" that was covered under different names by hundreds of people most popular names-Fennario, Peggy-O, etc.
I suppose most popular covers are the ones by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkle

    m.... f....

You mean he actually recorded a REAL folk song??

    m.... f....

@HotVoodooWitch no he just raked in the money claiming that he wrote the tune his own self. on my guitar case it says "Dylan is a s...." and to this day I will stand by it. Nobel prize or not!

  33. D.... D....

    Haunting then and haunting now.

  34. f.... ....

Have always loved Joan's version of this beautiful song!  Unfortunately there are some pretty bad covers of this song on YouTube.  (accept for Judy Collins and a good version by Simon & Garfunkel)

    f.... ....

They aren't "bad" covers they are despicable, atrocious, sacrilegious and disgusting versions of this song. This is the only version that truly represents the song in any respectful manner worthy of its greatness as a folk song.

  35. z.... ....

superb fingerpicking. I've been trying to master this song since 1970, and I aint been able to yet! for a chilling version try the dubliners version

  36. c.... ....

beautiful!!!!Judy Colins version is awesome too.Two very talented ladies....

  37. J.... L....

More beautiful than words can describe: like a songbird reborn in human form to bring us faith in life again.

  38. F.... C....

my mom´s reflection of music. she taught me about Joan, and i´ll teach my children. She´s worth it. Thanks for sharing.

  40. D.... D....

Too touching, too beautiful to be true.

  41. G.... F....

she's great to learn a song from so clear.

  42. C.... S....

I love hers and Judy Collins versions, such a beautiful song, thanks for sharing...

  43. p.... ....

This is perfection! And what a voice, especially in the end!

  44. T.... H....

This is good. Love her able to touch!

  45. E.... D....

Always touches my heart. Joan made these songs come to life in a way that spoke to me then, and now. Tragically beautiful...

  46. C.... ....

1 week and sore fingers later - cappo 4 - chords with C notes on 1st and 6th strings plus three notes of the C-shape. Either needs left thumb to get bottom C (not Joan) or swapping of 4th and 5th fingers around at the right time. For high D in middle of verse - catch top two strings, with pinky up on D on 1st string and index back on first fret 2nd string (ie F), then pick open C third string, then catch top strings again with middle on 3rd fret and 2nd string open, then C on bottom string.....

  47. b.... ....

  48. b.... ....

    AWESOME!!!

  49. z.... ....

yeah, wish that there was a version where you could see her left hand work. have been wrestling with this for more than 2o years

    z.... ....

it sounded like she might have had a back up player in parts.

  50. U.... S....

Such a pleasure to hear Joan's ctystal-clear voice with her straightforward precise Folkpicking guitar. Sooo well-doing!!!

  51. J.... ....

What a clear beautiful voice she had.

    J.... ....

JDibden “has” - she’s still singin’.
