Joan Armatrading - My Family Lyrics

Have you met my family
Wouldn't take long to know them well
Though they number from one to a million
In this house we all dwell

Say hello to Jo, she's a goddess
And to Paul, he is a saint
And Adam, he's from the forest
And to Jane, all day she paints

You ask me how I feel now
Well I will tell you no lie
Jessie, you bring the sunshine
And you can see it in her eyes

Johnny tends the garden
And little David sows the seeds
Our manna is from heaven

He gives us all we need

He is Peter
He's a piper, yeah
And they will never grow old
So I bid you welcome
Welcome brothers, yeah
Welcome to the fold

You ask me how I feel now
Well I will tell you no lie
Jessie, you bring the sunshine
And you can see it in her eyes

Johnny tends the garden
And little David sows the seeds
Our manna is from heaven
He gives us all we need

It hurts to know how under rated Joan Armatrading is. She deserves so much more!

I've just turned 50, listening to Joan Armatrading again after such a long time, takes me back some years, bringing back grate memories of growing up. Beautiful voice.

Some of the lyrics are off, this is what I've heard:

"You ask me how I feed them
Well I will tell you no lie
Tis Ann, she brings the sunshine
And you can see it in her eyes"

And I may be off... 😊

I Hear the name as Giselle. But that's only my opinion.

Great comment John LaStrada giving Pam Nestor her due credit. Pam's lyrics on 'Could have been better' are the basis of a heart rending classic in my view.

This brings back great memories of my mum. Brilliant :)

All the songs except for three were written by the original team of Joan Armatrading & lyricist/pianist Pam Nestor. This song being one of those collaborations. I love Joan Armatrading but the original team of Gus Dudgeon and Mike Stone edged Pam Nestor out of the collaborative position, didn't add her name to the first album and slowly Pam faded from view. Typical business decision that interfered with a potentially good partnership. It's too bad because this first album had its moments of greats. "Alice" is one Joan's best songs and it was an Armatrading-Nestor song. The melodies are all Joan's and they are strong, and typical of what was to come. Lots of Elton John musicians were involved in this album. A shame Nestor was squeezed out but it's interesting to listen to the majority of these songs since they weren't all Joan's originals. Certain sparks of Joan's were evident in how great she would become. This is an under-rated album.

Never had any idea. Thanks for the history lesson!

Spot on Judith. It's Quite possibly the most powerful song i've ever heard. The whole album is remarkable.

Yes, this in my top three of Joan albums. I also think it has some of the best lyrics of Joan's career, certainly more consistently than her other albums.

  11. S.... ....

I think it's 'You ask me how I feed them'. Hence the part about tending the garden and sowing the seeds. That's how I've always heard it.

    STEVWATSON You are correct!

Her vocal timbre and phrasing are just sublime, especially on this track. I get goosebumps on the "You ask me how I feel now" part.

So good. Haven't listened to this song in over 15 years, ever since my ex-girlfriend took the vinyl with her when we broke up. I take it from the picture above that it's been remastered and re-released on CD, and I'll go get it immediately.
