Jimmy Dean - P. T. 109 Lyrics

In '43 they put to sea thirteen men and Kennedy
Aboard the PT 109 to fight the brazen enemy
And off the isle of Olasana in the straight beyond Naru
A Jap destroyer in the night cut the 109 in two
Smoke and fire upon the sea everywhere they looked was the enemy
The heathen gods of old Japan yeah they thought had the best of a mighty good man

And on the coast of Kolombangara looking through this telescope
Australian Evans saw the battle for the crew had little hope
Two were dead and some were wounded all were clinging to the bow
Fightin' fire and flightin' water trying to save themselves somehow
Smoke and fire upon the sea...

McMahon the Irishman was burned so badly he couldn't swim
Leave me here go on he said cause if you don't we'll all be dead
The PT skipper couldn't leave him a man to die alone at sea
And with a strap between his teeth he towed the Irishman through the sea
Smoke and fire upon the sea...

He led his men through waters dark rocky reefs and hungry sharks
He braved the enemy's bayonets a thirty eight hung round his neck
Four more days and four more nights a rescue boat pulled into sight
The PT 109 was gone but Kennedy and his crew lived on
Now who could guess who could possibly know that same man named Kennedy
Would be the leader of the nation be the one to take command
The PT 109 was gone but Kennedy lived to fight again
Smoke and fire upon the sea everywhere they looked was the enemy
But JFK and his crew lived on
Which proves it's hard to get the best of a man named John
(Big John Big John Big John Big John Big John Big John)

Kirk Davis - he was killed by cowards. I used to be proud to be an American in the 60's & 70's. Today I watch my back and over my shoulder. Sad is this country today. I am ashamed of what we have become today. Really sad. He would turn over in his grave if he saw what this country has become today.

"And it's one two three, what are we fighting for, I dont know, I dont give a damn, next stop is Vietnam . . ."  Country Joe lifted that riff from the chorus here !  =)   No offense meant, Im a huge fan of Kennedy.  Best thing ever happened to this country, so of course he had to go, as well as his brother Bobby and the great Martin Luther King.  Dont want any of those anti Wall St, anti Fed types who care more about the people, ruining the game for the big boys who own the country.  Imagine if the three of them had survived, what a great place this would have been. It was great for a little while though and we shared big dreams. Thats why we look back on that period with such affection. RIP my good friends John, Bobby and Martin. God bless you.

How does a destroyer run over your PT boat? More to the point was Kennedy sleeping or drunk? Whatever it was dereliction of duty in the worst way. Yet with every song and story JFK was made a hero. He should have been court marshaled.

    Jfk murdered by mossad

The pt boat was probably the biggest piece of we ever had. Wooden for starters. But in the early years of the war we didn't have much.

    G.... D....

It was extremely dark at the time they were hit. PT 109 had no radar though at least one other PT in the vicinity did. The destroyer came upon them very rapidly at 30+ knots. It is doubtful even if they had heard it coming if they would have been able to determine in time that it was on a collision course and take evasive action. Stationed where they were, you would have to admit that the chances of a close encounter with enemy vessels, let alone a direct collision, were pretty low.

JFK should have been given the Medal of Honor!!

Kennedy was the last American president to have ever seen combat with his own eyes. Maybe Carter but he was safely on a boat miles from any trouble.

SneakieFox Kennedy was running three engines. He should have been running all four engines as required. That would have given him the power to avoid collision. McCarther said he should have been court martialed for failure to follow orders and losing a PT boat.

Sad today American History is no longer taught in our schools. Every kid in America should know this story -----

    L.... ....

LEONIDAS when I was in my teen, I checked out the book the story of PT-109 many times, I read that book and it’s a very good book. In my Junior year of high school, we had as our history class requirement to read 2 books on World War II, we had to tell of it. I tried to focus on the Pacific & Far East side of World War II. My uncle was a Gunners Mate Gunnery aboard the USS Southerland DD-743, he was a plank owner on that ship, he was in the Battle for Leyte Gulf, my late father in law was in the Army during World War II, so were 2 of my second cousins who were Marines, both were on Guadalcanal.

    L.... ....

LEONIDAS for every million girly boys today there are 5 real men.

    L.... ....
