Jimmy Buffett - Pacing The Cage Lyrics

Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it's pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you've lived too long
The days drip slowly on the page
And you catch yourself
Pacing the cage

I've proved who I am so many times,
The magnetic strip's worn thin
And each time I was someone else
And everyone was taken in.
Powers chatter in high places
Stir up eddies in the dust of rage
Set me to pacing the cage.

I never knew what you all wanted
So I gave you everything.
All that I could pillage
All the spells that I could sing
It's as if the thing were written
In the constitution of the age
Sooner or later you'll wind up
Pacing the cage

Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can't see what's round the bend.
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend.
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land,
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage...

I put the Cockburn original and this cover in my Buffett playlist. Thanks for the upload -- I really like Buffett's low key vocals here.

I heard this version first and still think it's the best, though it's not a contest.

Very NICE, BRKON! You have a poetic soul, as well. Not sure when we'll be up in Maine territory, but we surely enjoyed it! We took photos and videos, but haven't gotten around to doing anything with them to show the beauty of our trip through your neighborhood...(You live up that way, right?)

  9. c.... ....

Not sure if we answered you BRKONTHRU2, but nope, the oil spill didn't affect us personally. Unfortunately, a lot of the misery for the folks who live along the coastline doesn't really get reported at great length unless it somehow affects the populous of New Orleans. Sometimes the good, hearty, hard-working people who have had to be so resiliant throughout their history, feel as though they are almost invisible, as you have rightly suggested.

  10. c.... ....

Thanks you, Netzac! Glad you liked our video/slideshow. Cappy sure does take some cool photos. It's my fun to weave them together to the words of songs.

  11. N.... T....

Are you kiddin' me man. That is awesome. Love the bow breaker shot! Peace.

  12. c.... ....

Yeah, it's been rough for the New Orleans area for the last few years, but our little town hasn't been touched by all the calamity, thank The Lord! Thanks for thinking about us! Hope all is good wherever you are.

  13. c.... ....

Aww thanks! He's so talented and we have just about every CD he's ever made.

  14. W.... S....

LOVE this...thanks. Huge Jimmy fan, and this is one of my top favorite songs. :)

  15. c.... ....

Thanks guys for your comments. Ok, Steve, will do.

As a water person, sailor, nature lover, and huge fan of Jimmy and Bruce Cockburn, this really resonated with me. Bruce's lyrics and Jimmy's styling are a perfect match. Thanks for putting it together. I put together a video for some friends of a trip we that made recently to South Padre Island, Texas. It has another one of my favorite Jimmy songs... A Pirate Looks at 40. Check it out if you wish on my channel TheSteveEL, SCAUG-South Padre Island 2012

Wow. Cannot believe had not heard this before. It brings tears to my eyes and yet I cannot stop listening to it. Thanks to Ken Hoffman for his recommendation in the Sunday paper!

  18. m.... ....

Jimmy's cover is good, but the original by Cockburn is better. Check it out.

    m.... ....

markrm16 Cockburn is ok but he lacks the depth and tone that Buffett gives the piece.

  19. d.... ....

i miss working on the water... id go back in a heartbeat but i would have to leave my wife and kids.

  20. c.... ....

Yeah, you are right about that !! Thanks for the comment :-)

  21. D.... N....

Jimmy's song take me back to the 1970's - life seemed a lot better then

  22. c.... ....

Wow, merkavamkii...you and elletsco seem to be saying the same thing which I think is great. I'd love to see other people's slideshow interpretations of this song...their lives put to this beautiful song. So with that, I will go look to see if there are others. Thanks for the comment! :-)

  23. c.... ....

I think you are right, elletsco, although I never thought about it that way. Now I'm wondering about other people's interpretations in photos...their lives. Thanks for the food for thought.

  24. c.... ....

We had a great time yesterday; the crowd for his show was...well...a sea of humanity. We took some pics and Cappy is in the process of making a little slideshow of the Jazz Fest, but I like your idea of the Shelter or Changing Channels. Will seriously look into it.Thanks for the great idea.

  25. c.... ....

Thank you for your wonderful comments, fellow parrot-head. Oh and btw, we will be "fins up!" this Saturday afternoon at the New Orleans Jazz Fest...ain't we lucky :-p

  26. c.... ....

Why thank you so much! You just made our day. (((U)))
