Jim Reeves - The Letter Edged In Black Lyrics

I was standin' by my window yesterday morning
Without a thought of sorrow or of care
When I saw the postman comin' up the pathway
With such a smiling face and jolly air.

He rang the bell and whistled as he waited
Then he said; "Good morning to you, Jack"
But he little knew the sorrow that he brought me
When he handed me a letter edged in black.

With trembling hands I took the letter from him
I open it and sifted what it said:
"Come home my boy, your dear old daddy wants you
Come home my boy, your dear old mother's dead."

"The last words your mother ever uttered
Tell my boy I want him to come back
My eyes are blurred, my poor old heart is breaking
As, I write to you this letter edged in black."

"Those angry words I wish I'd never spoken
You know I didn't mean them, don't you, Jack
May the angels bear me witness, I am asking
Your forgiveness in this letter edged in black."...

They used to sing this song at family gathering at my grandparents at new years back in the 1950's!

  10. M.... C....

Whether its Jim ,hank snow or slim Whitman, it's a song I first heard back in the late fifties when country music was country music, if only we could go back to that time and not have to listen to the crapp they dish up to us today and try to tell us it's country music ,they apparently haven't listened to music like this

Wow! What a song and what a rendition!!!!
Only Jim could sing this way. Wish he had lived much much longer.

I’m 54 now. My eldest brother told me today my mom used to sing 🎶 this to us. She raised eight kids and ran the household. My pops made the money and she managed it. They both passed Young in life, miss them so much. Just learning now to accept and try and look at it differently
Thank you so much for posting this! Beautiful song that has new meaning for me now. 😢
