Jim Reeves - Old Tige Lyrics

(Tige you were faithful, faithful to the end)
(Tige how I miss you, you were my best friend)

Three years of Army Service done and I was headin' home at last
I got to thinking 'bout my dog and things long gone past
How old Tige pulled me from a creek when I had no pulse or breath
How he saved me from the changin' bull that gored my Dad to death.

As a kid I'd dream of bears and tremble to my toes
Till old Tige come up to my bed and nudge me with his nose
Then my fears would melt away and Tige would go lie down
I'd drift on back to sleep without another sound.

The big bus stopped and I got off it was awful dark and thick with fog
Then something gently nuzzled me and there stood Tige my dog
I wondered if my faithful dog had met the bus each day
And all the dreary winter nights since I'd been away.

Have Tige meet me here like this I was I was really glad
'Cause I hadn't needed Tige so much since the day they've burried Dad
Too long miles still lay ahead but what I didn't know
A giant Dam was being built where the old road used to go.

I think the Lord was sending Tige and I followed where he led
Knowing well without his help that I'd be good as dead
Tige inched along this way and that going rough and slow
And I could hear the water a lappin' at the ledges far below.

Then through the mist I saw a light and mother in her chair
And I reached down to pet old Tige but he wasn't there
I'm thankful Mom you had old Tige these three lonely years
I owe my life to him tonight I couldn't help my tears.

You say you wrote me bout the Dam well God was sure with us
I didn't get your letter Mom but old Tige met the bus
I hate to tell you son she said but now you've got to know
When you left it broke his heart Tige died three years ago.

(You were my best friend.)...

OMG I thought Elvis and Old shep was the ultimate dog weeping song, but this is something else. What beautiful words and story. Jim Reeves, you must have broke a million hearts of every dog lover who has loved and lost his best four legged friend.

Gosh, that makes me cry. My sweet dogs are kept warm and safe. I never leave them. FFs, holidays? No thanks. Not unless they can come! I would rather stay right here with them. When the local morons were setting off fireworks last weekend, I was under a quilt with my baby girls. They snuggled into me and we covered up. Thay stopped shaking and stayed close to me.

When I was 10 my mare was born. I carried her out of the field in my arms when she was born. We were best friends for 9 years. Because of the Vietnam war I had to go away overseas. I flew home just to ride my beloved Heidi. I walked the fields looking for her. When my mother got home from work she told me that she had sold her for $50 to a slaughter house. NO SHE WAS NOT SICK! MY MOTHER WAS PISSED BECAUSE I WAS FORCED TO LEAVE HOME BY THE DRAFT BOARD!! She looked at me like "What are you going to do about it?" My mother recently died and I refused to attend her funeral which was just 5 miles away. I hope she is in hell.

My ole Dad loved Jim Reeves and still have his old vinyl lp's .First time i've heard this beautiful track in decades and come the end of the song my eyes were welling up. Distant Drums was the other track dad loved and i have to admit now i'm older i appreciate the older music more now than ever.

It amazes and disturbs me that
    songwriters are largely ignored by
the channel operators who refrain from providing this vital
    information in the
    description of their videos, which
    is an affront to the
    men and women
    who give us so
much pleasure from the fruits of
their labor and inspiration. And one RARELY leaves a thank you to the songwriters
on a comment page, probably because they are
    unaware of who
    they are. This
    remarkable song
was written by Ross and Mildred
Burke. It was based on an actual incident
    that occured in
    1955 when Jim
    Reeves was traveling by auto
    during a thunderstorm and
    he jammed on his
    brakes to avoid
hitting someone on foot in the road. He thought he might even have hit the person, so he proceeded slowly
down the road looking for a possible person, but could find nothing. But he
suddenly came upon a bridge that
    was washed out
that he would very likely not have seen if he had been traveling at
    a normal rate of
    speed. The songwriters were
impressed by this story told to them
by Jim, and altered it to become a story
    about a dog they
    created out of
    their own minds.
    This song ranks
    in my mind as a
dead heat photo finish for first place with Walter
Brennan's "Old Rivers" for the best narrated song of
all-time. Of course I am most grateful for the channel operator for making this song
    so readily available for an
    international audience.

This song goes with me a lot. I hate a cat, he was an orange cat, so a tiger... he died 2 and a half years ago now. I left him in the country and 2 week later he died of unknown reasons... my mom was the one to call me and tell me. I cried so much and I still am not over it. Wish I didn't leave him but there's nothing I can do now but hope in the great beyond, I'll see him again.

  55. L.... M....

  81. J.... H....

There is another comment I'd like to make on the subject. Dog's have proved time and time and time again that they are man's best friend have they not? Well then as that's the case then why are we not theirs? Stop being cruel to them all they want is love & affection. It's not too much to ask is it?

What year was this song recorded?

    m.... ....

madcapper6 It was the B side to Distant Drums.

  89. D.... ....

I first heard this song when I was just 17 and my dog Lucky got killed by some dogs down the street. I carried him into the house and he died in my arms around 4 in the morning. You talk about a tear jerker, I'm 65 years old now and I still cry when I hear this song. There isn't anyone that can sing this like Jim Reeves.

    D.... ....

God bless you and your poor dog X

  90. J.... B....

I learn this song off by heart when I was 10 when my dad used to play it to me on a 7 inch record. I still know every word and that's 28 years ago. It's so nice to hear it again. Jim reeves had such a great voice and he died way to young. We all miss out on such a great voice.

  91. A.... B....

Love this song my dad played all the time when I was a small child. Never thought I would fine it on here x

  92. M.... F....

such a great song from a great singer R.I.P JIM

  94. D.... s....

Haven't heard this song for about 20 years, and amazingly remembered every word!

  95. a.... m....

This  song  makes  me  cry  ,  lost  two  dogs  this  year   one   died  aged  14   his  back  legs  went  other  di
ed  at  15  of  cancer  ,  had  to  play  this  to  let  tears  out

  96. h.... ....

    Did Jim write this?

  97. T.... D....

i would rather have my two borders than humans any time loyal trusting and unconditional love from them and constant friends to watch them play and enjoy life takes me back to when my children were small and nothing to worry about why do we get older and more synical about life ....

  98. S.... M....

This is one of Jim Reeves' best numbers of all time but not widely acknowledged as such. I view it as a  tribute to how much unconditional love dogs give but  many times they get so little in return. Only the hardhearted are unaffected by this song.

    S.... M....

for all those listeners i believe its on a 45 rpm but it was a b-side find wishing by jim
and you will find old tige--still availiable on the 45

    S.... M....

@stanley tomlinson I have it on the B side of Distant Drums

  99. b.... ....
