Jim Reeves - Billy Bayou Lyrics

Back about eighteen hundred some
A Louisian couple hade
A redheaded son no name suited him the Jim Jack or Joe
They just called him Billy Bayou.

[Chorus]
Billy Billy Bayou watch where you go your walking on quicksand walk slow.
Billy Billy Bayou what what you say
A pretty girl will get you one of these days.

Bill was big for his size
red hair and freckles and big blue eyes
thirteen years form the day he was born
he fought the battle of the little big horn

[Chorus]

One sad day billy sad cried ho! ho!
I can whip the fathers of Geronmino
He got smart the cheif got mad
this nearly ended our Louisiana lad

[Chorus]

one day in eighteen-sevenyeight
A pretty girl'll walked up to Bill's front
He didn't know whether to stand or run
he wound up marred cause he did eather one

[Chorus]

Pretty girl'll will get you one of these days

I am 50 and when I was younger than 2yrs old, I can remember standing on the front bench seat of the car (Yes Standing) pacing like it was my stage and belting this out at the top of my little lungs. I played it 10x in a row and rocked it like I was 1 again :)

  5. B.... N....

My folks square and round danced MANY decades, and this song was a round dance they did at one time. So many memories.

    B.... J....

Did Jim, Jack, or Joe not suit?

  27. A.... H....

15 years still listening all because of my mom

  28. D.... O....

My mother used to sing this to us when the family would go see relatives. this was in the late 70's. my mother had such a beautiful voice back then. Unfortunately age is catching up to her now. I love this song and her very much.

  29. j.... s....

soes anyone know who played the opening guitar riff. still to this day it is one of my top 5 fav Jim tunes. still have my old 45

  30. T.... B....

Sweet tune thanks for the post

  31. L.... C....

Funny how it goes. The last time I heard this song I was maybe 5 years old but I was driving and started singing it out of the blue. I had to find it and play it.

My father used to have an 8 track player in his pickup truck that we took camping when I was little. I remember my mom playing this song and singing along to it as we were headed out to the lake to go camping.

  32. M.... h....

Say, I don't quite understand ; why did Billy - when a pretty girl walked through his front gate - have to marry because he neither stood there nor ran?  What did he do instead?

    M.... h....

    And then . . . . and then . . .  and then . . . ?

    M.... h....

he got her pregnant, it's called entrapment lol. something fathers should warn there sons against.

    M.... h....

moral of the story. you can be a mighty big man, but if you don't learn to say no to a woman you'll find trouble quickly.

  33. S.... C....

    I adore that guitar solo ☺ :)

    S.... C....

Chet Atkins finest..he also produced it.

  34. c.... w....

Jim reeves had such a great voice. like so many other greats, he left way to soon

  35. C.... M....

Makes me think of a bayou tour I did about a year ago! Love Louisiana  :)

  38. P.... ....

My late grandma loved Jim Reeves music and whenever I hear his music I am can smell freshly made cakes and scones and knowing I am not allowed in the kitchen because I'll eat all the cake! My grandma was going deaf so the whole street could hear his music.

  39. D.... ....

This is great.  I've only been familiar with the Roger Miller version, who of course wrote it (that is until now, and since 'youtube' came along!).  Thanks to whomever who posted.  (Though, I am still partial to Roger's...) ~ ;-)

    D.... ....

I like this but, like you, prefer Roger Miller's version.

Dear +walter gutierrez -- Well first of all, the word is 'written' not 'wrote', 'your' not 'ur' (..punctuation?..), etc... :
From Wikipedia: '"Billy Bayou" is a 1958 single by Jim Reeves written by Roger Miller.[1] Billy Bayou spent a total of twenty-five weeks on the country chart and was Jim Reeves fourth release to reach number one, where it stayed for five weeks.[2] There is a song on the B-side of "Billy Bayou" titled "I'd Like to Be", which peaked at number eighteen on the country charts. The song has been covered by other artists, including Burl Ives and Doug Kershaw.'
