I am 50 and when I was younger than 2yrs old, I can remember standing on the front bench seat of the car (Yes Standing) pacing like it was my stage and belting this out at the top of my little lungs. I played it 10x in a row and rocked it like I was 1 again :)

My folks square and round danced MANY decades, and this song was a round dance they did at one time. So many memories.

15 years still listening all because of my mom

My mother used to sing this to us when the family would go see relatives. this was in the late 70's. my mother had such a beautiful voice back then. Unfortunately age is catching up to her now. I love this song and her very much.

Funny how it goes. The last time I heard this song I was maybe 5 years old but I was driving and started singing it out of the blue. I had to find it and play it.

My father used to have an 8 track player in his pickup truck that we took camping when I was little. I remember my mom playing this song and singing along to it as we were headed out to the lake to go camping.

Say, I don't quite understand ; why did Billy - when a pretty girl walked through his front gate - have to marry because he neither stood there nor ran?  What did he do instead?

And then . . . . and then . . .  and then . . . ?

he got her pregnant, it's called entrapment lol. something fathers should warn there sons against.

moral of the story. you can be a mighty big man, but if you don't learn to say no to a woman you'll find trouble quickly.

Love this sing. It brings back summer memories even if it came out before I was born. My parents listened to it.

My late grandma loved Jim Reeves music and whenever I hear his music I am can smell freshly made cakes and scones and knowing I am not allowed in the kitchen because I'll eat all the cake! My grandma was going deaf so the whole street could hear his music.

This is great.  I've only been familiar with the Roger Miller version, who of course wrote it (that is until now, and since 'youtube' came along!).  Thanks to whomever who posted.  (Though, I am still partial to Roger's...) ~ ;-)

Used to sit cross legged on the floor with my little record player.  This was one of my 45's that I dearly loved and would play often.  Much to the chagrin of one of my family members who remains unknown...found my Billy Bayou record in the back window of our car completely warped by the sun....I cried...
