Jethro Tull - Velvet Green Lyrics

Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care: with your legs in the air, loving.
Walking on velvet green.
Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands.
Go down on velvet green, with a country man.
Who's a young girls fancy and an old maid's dream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
And the long grass blows in the evening cool.
And August's rare delight may be April's fool.
But think not of that, my love,
I'm tight against the seam.
And I'm growing up to meet you down on velvet green.
Now I may tell you that it's love and not just lust.
And if we live the lie, let's lie in trust.
On golden daffodils, to catch the silver stream
that washes out the wild oat seed on velvet green.
We'll dream as lovers under the stars ---
of civilizations raging afar.
And the ragged dawn breaks on your battle scars.
As you walk home cold and alone upon velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care: with your legs in the air, loving.
Walking on velvet green.

  14. S.... H....

Songs in the woods forever. May the Djinn go weak kneed.

  15. r.... m....

After all these years I have still to firmly define this genre. All I know is that it precious and rare. It's not folk, strictly speaking and of course Jazz influenced, classical and rock elements, Elizabethan elements....Strawbs did something in the same general area, but this is unique. This is a rare treasure, never to be found again.

  16. G.... S....

I love this wonderful simfo rock

  17. r.... p....

The only real time machine is music!

  18. S.... P....

I was born 1971 and hear it 2019😁

  19. M.... F....

Jethro Tull is basically Elizabethan/Shakespearean rock.

  20. J.... ....

I love how this piece gains momentum the returns to the original refrain.

  21. E.... L....

    ˚仌.◔◔'˚仌.'

  22. S.... B....

I actually play at ren fairs. This song has inspired me for years. Tull in all excess has inspired me. Thank you guys. Really.

  23. S.... J....

Maybe some day we all can understand, that we are part of the exceptional life given to us, rather than enforcing those slaves that know nothing. Or being enslaved by those that think they know.

  24. B.... ....

    best song ever made.

  25. N.... W....

….as you walk home cold and alone on velvet green.

  26. N.... W....

  28. R.... S....

    Sheer masterpiece

  29. P.... W....

if neighbors told me to turn this down I would just ignore them and turn the music up louder because I'll listen to these songs always no matter wehat others would say or do they can't stop the power of all this here and now it never ends.

  30. c.... m....

Great. Thank you for the poetry and the beautiful songs. You are fabulous. Pena Gil

  31. C.... M....

It's so hard to say that this is Tull's best album so I'll say it's my personal favorite though I love em all

  32. M.... G....

Love love love this song. Love anything Elizabethan like dressing up in clothes from that period at the festivals and words of advice by Shakespeare like "To mourn a mischief that is past and gone, is the next way to draw new mischief on, the robbed that smiles steals something from the thief, he robs himself that spends a bootless grief". Wise advice I always follow.

  44. C.... B....

Ian Anderson is a genius. I have loved Jethro Tull since 1969. This song is enchanting and timeless.

    C.... B....

Hi..i have rock channel music page..

  45. P.... S....

A very very clever man is our Ian..I've only recently found out that he also wrote a lot of steel eye spans songs

    P.... S....

You sure? He produced some of their albums, played a little bit on the odd song maybe, but I don't think he wrote many, if any, of them

  46. S.... E....

Me n the lads going to slay alduin

  47. b.... w....

    Κομμάταρα ρε τζιμακο

  48. M.... G....

  50. G.... L....

I always read about the greast genius of Ian, and...yes! right; but few of people say that He has always had very great musicians wit him

  51. I.... C....

    Brilliant album

  52. S.... M....

    The Best 💖

  53. O.... K....

Ian Anderson's tunes are a style and brillant music which may be recognized at first notch

  54. B.... H....

THIS HAS TO BE MY FAVORITE JETHRO TULL SONG.

  55. R.... R....

This song just made my life.

  56. b.... b....

In a growing world of madness and PC rubbish etc, ....listening to Tull is a lovely bit of respite and happiness......do it often !

  57. F.... N....

JT at work, at driving, smoking with Jack in The Green...

  58. M.... G....

Sorry to keep commenting but this song is my favorite Jethro Tull song of all time and I love all of their songs (this includes the genius musicianship in the band).

  59. g.... ....

This harks back to medieval music and I love it.   I can see this being played in a banquet hall in King Henry VIII day... Ian as the Court Jester playing his tunes to the applaud of Henry VIII and his courtiers.

  60. M.... G....

Is there any such thing as a bad Jethro Tull song? NO. PERIOD.

    M.... G....

I'm kind of with you - but I don't think that '17' (B side of 'Sweet Dream') is their finest hour :-)

  61. O.... ....

Did you add that extra reverb?

  62. R.... ....

I’m sure Game of Thrones fans will appreciate some of this.

    R.... ....

    Myself, longtime Tull fan.

  63. J.... R....

The best álbum song. Ian anderson is a wonderful composer all times.

  64. M.... G....

The man is a f_cking genius.

  65. M.... K....

I was lucky enough to have as a best friend a guy that spent every spare dime he made on Tull concert tickets,I saw them 28 times twice in Vegas and once in The Northwestern University gymnasium about 15 feet away from Ian's crazy eyes.No matter where you saw them you know you were in for a show.

  66. M.... N....

perfect musicianship, this got to be the best band in the world, in the same league as Pink Floyd and Wishbone Ash. Sir Ian Anderson, thank you for your music and art, pure genius and creativity.

    M.... N....

I like Wishbone Ash a lot too - but, no, Tull and Ash are not in the same league. I really think Tull are in a league of their own. I don't mean that they are better than everyone else (even if they are the band that I personally find the most enjoyable to listen to), but that their music is totally unique, uncategorisable except as "Jethro Tull music", nobody else sounds like them and they don't sound like anybody else.

  67. r.... ....

Goose bumps, for cripes sake!!! I have probably listened to this over one hundred times and I STILL get goose bumps....

  68. p.... s....

There was bootleg and limited release 8 track jethro tull albums in the 70s and early 80s amazing gems...headphone music.

  69. y.... h....

    Jethro tull blows

    In a flute.

  70. G.... G....

I want to remind people that there is nobody named Jethro Tull in the band.

  71. M.... W....

1 of his best albums in my world!!!!!!!!!

  72. M.... W....

FUCKIN TULL IAN 1 OF THE BEST CAN'T BELIEVE SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THIS MUSIC GUESS THEY DIDINT LIVE IN MEDIEVIL TIMES IN THEIR LIVES

  73. A.... G....

I wonder how would Mozart react to this tune ? Would he come out with something like "saw you standing there" or would he just see it as something "barbarian?"
Only music like this brings you to such kind of thoughts!.....don't think..don't think...watch tv

  74. M.... G....

Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands
Go down on velvet green, with a country man

  85. A.... B....

I was a big fan of Jethro Tull and the moody blues. In the mid 70's

  86. M.... M....

I was 17. It changed my life both morally and sexually: I learned how to be a moral animal with this song (and others) to guide me.

  87. g.... f....

Gill Davies, That is awesome! I'm a Tull fan big time! When my kids were young, the whole family went on a camping trip. The kids did not know Supertramp and I had a captive audience, so I played the breakfast in America album the whole way there. The kids are now true fans, LOL.

  88. C.... B....

GENIUS! When I listen its like I go to the place he is singing about. Some of my favorites I cant even listen to if I am sad or whatever. He takes me to magical places and soothes my soul. I would love to meet others who feel the same way.
