Jethro Tull - Up The 'Pool Lyrics

I'm going up the `pool from down the smoke below
to taste my mum's jam sarnies and see our Aunty Flo.
The candyfloss salesman watches ladies in the sand
down for a freaky weekend in the hope that they'll be meeting
Mister Universe.

The iron tower smiles down upon the silver sea
and along the golden mile they'll be swigging mugs of tea.
The politicians there who've come to take the air
while posing for the daily press
will look around and blame the mess
on Edward Bear.

There'll be bucket, spades and bingo, cockles, mussels, rainy days,
seaweed and sand castles, icy waves.
Deck chairs, rubber dinghies, old vests, braces dangling down,
sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze.

We're going up the `pool from down the smoke below
to taste my mum's jam sarnies and see our Aunty Flo.
The candy floss salesman watches ladies in the sand
down for a freaky weekend in the hope that they'll be meeting
Mister Universe.

There'll be buckets, spades and bingo, cockles, mussels, rainy days,
seaweed and sand castles, icy waves,
Deck chairs, rubber dinghies, old vests, braces dangling down,
sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze.

Oh Blackpool,
oh Blackpool.

The iron tower smiles down on the silver sea.

Up the pool dall'album del 72 doppio che possiedo anch io in vinile acquistato a Firenze negli anni 70 cioè Living in the past che era praticamente una raccolta dei 45 giri della band dal 68 ai primi dei 70 up the pool era uno di quei brani inseriti su quell album raccolta Piacevole pezzo dal chiaro sapore folk rock un po' agreste come spesso Jan amava comporre ma penso che alcune di quel tipo le componga ancora perché Jan Anderson pur essendo un innovatore nel suo animo e nella sua musica mantiene care le radici della tradizione folk anglosassone ed in special modo quelle medievali e barocche non a caso il nome Jethro Tull era quello di un agronomo scozzese del periodo barocco inventore della inseminatrice artificiale che pose le basi per la moderna agricoltura

    Genious

  16. J.... S....

    so beautiful!

  17. B.... A....

    Who is Edward Pier?

    B.... A....

I think it's Edward Bear, which was a Canadian pop band of the time, or the "real" name of Winnie the Pooh.

    B.... A....

Edward Bear would most likely refer to the then prime minister Ted Heath.

  18. S.... T....

One of the best bands ever..... stunning entertainment on stage ......... brilliant and could only be British with their sense of humour and word play.

  19. f.... ....

Roy Harper does a good cover of this.

  20. r.... b....

    Very enjoyable.

  21. W.... b....

I have this on vinyl. blast from the past

  22. J.... M....

My sister bought the single, man we played it to death! There was Docter Brokenbroom and Jesus I can,t remember what else.

    J.... M....

5 songs on a single. I don't think it was released outside the UK though, hence they all appear on Living in the Past.

    J.... M....

    Never a single

    J.... M....

  23. T.... ....

    Perfection

  24. D.... D....

"There'll be buckets, spades and bingo, cockles, mussels, rainy days, seaweed and sand castles, icy waves. Deck chairs rubber dingies, old vests, braces dangling down, sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze."

    D.... D....

    What a great lyric

    D.... D....

I always thought it was "...a seaweed dance, sand castles, icy waves." Ian Anderson is a musical conjurer.

    D.... D....

    dinghies

    D.... D....

    It's from Hindi

    D.... D....

The lad had a way with words all right.

  25. j.... a....

this album and song are perfection.i still play it weekly.

  26. C.... F....

Anderson in his prime was the best and most animated performer to ever hit the stage. He was incredible in his movement and musicianship...a concert that will forever be etched upon my mind.

    C.... F....

    Exactly

  27. j.... m....

JETHRO TULL & YES both !!!!! Notwithstanding in the phukin Rock and Roll HALL OF FAME NOW !!!!.......................... its a travesty I tell ya b4 the Trumpeteers tear down that city with righteous anger !!!

  28. j.... m....

look around and blame the mess on "WILSON GOODE!!!" move debacle May 13,th 1985 from the Quaker City Gulag !!!

    j.... m....

joe mer I remember graffiti under the South St. bridge over the Schukyll River... "Goode is no good."

    j.... m....

    Obuttboy !!!

  29. B.... L....

skating away on the thin ice of the new day

  30. G.... D....

    What a great song.

  31. j.... s....

    Oyston Out

  32. S.... F....

Written about the town he lived in- Blackpool.

  33. G.... N....

...The poliicians there who've come to take the air while posing for the daily press,
will look around and blame the mess on TONY BLAIR!

    G.... N....

The line- blame the mess on Edward Bear. Edward Bear was Winnie Poo's name before he was renamed. The name Winnie came later, from a brown bear that young Christopher Robin Milne visited in the London Zoo.

So, that is kind of clever. You blame the mess on Winnie the Poo.

    G.... N....

    Wilson GOOOODDDEEEE !!!!

  34. d.... ....

    yes!  yes!  yeeeeeeeaaaaas!

  35. B.... W....

    This just makes me smile.

  36. A.... G....

I very much enjoy that tune.

  37. R.... P....

Iconic bright and cheerful Tull. Say no more.

  38. R.... M....

not in the Hall of Fame is beyond belief and sanity.

    R.... M....

Would the music be any better, were they in the Hall of Fame? Tulls music is as good as it ever was, Hall of Fame or no Hall of Fame...

    R.... M....

Jethro Tull/ Ian Anderson music is a bit off the beaten track which is part of what makes it so great. I had a lady tell me once 'we don't like Jethro Tull'. I had 'Nothing To Say'.

    R.... M....

Exactly why I don't give the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame any credibility.

    R.... M....

RRHOF is not really a hall of fame.
It is a attaboy from a no longer relevant publication. Rolling Stone controls it and no one can name one good reason why...

    R.... M....

    screw the hall of fame!

  39. O.... K....

This was from an ep in the year 1971, just after Aqualung, and before thick as a brick. A bit later they released it in Living ... Introducing Barry Barlow on drums. I bought it with Aualung in a market around 1991. Must have been 15-16 year old. New world. Still in love with it. No doubt best epoch Jethro. The genious of Ian at his best.

    O.... K....

tull goes thru stages which I think is why fans differ on favs ...wood/horses a fav too.....tull forever!!!!

    O.... K....

@fluffydolly I have to admit I never heard that one. My favourites are Aqualung, Thick..., Minstrell..., Too old... and Stand up

    O.... K....

out of those all I like aqualung is least with stand up & minstrel most .....that's me though!!!!

    O.... K....

    @fluffydolly why??

    O.... K....

@Omar Kayham too popular great album but stand up was after a bluesy first lp /this was (don't have yet).lots of passion a start of a perfect signature sound yet somewhat rarer to most people. as for minstrel kool yet classic feel yet new.

  40. j.... ....

Superb. One of his finest of works(Living in the Past)!!! I so love it so!

  41. J.... R....

I have to inform you that in Lancashire we say Jam Sarnies, which means Jam Sandwich ...just so you know ...Love this song ...

    J.... R....

They're sarnies darn the Smoke too.

    J.... R....

When I were a lad a sarnie was two slices of bread, and a butty was one slice folded over.

    J.... R....

what no peanut butter on it??!

    J.... R....

do you 1 better 2 slices of "American" bread with a piece of fried chicken in betwixt LOL HAHAHAHAH !!!!!!

    J.... R....

WE say it darn sahf too lol.

  42. f.... ....

    early tull rocks!!!!!

  43. J.... L....

Makes me wanna try jam sardis.  then i realize... it's sardines....with jam.  Bllluueeeghhhhhhh

    J.... L....

I was about to inform you of such when I read what you said.

    J.... L....

Jam is Sweet fruit Jam or Jello, Sarnies is a short slang  word for Sandwich in the U.K. it has nothing to do with Sardines, just to let you know, cheers.

  44. N.... N....

    Great song.

  45. b.... ....

love love love this song , always makes me smile no matter how bad the day gets .

  46. D.... ....

My favorite Tull song at the moment. It makes me soooo happy everytime :)

  47. G.... S....

    Just sublime.

  48. F.... G....

These pictures show the actual band called Jethro Tull, and not future incarnations which tend to be the Ian Anderson Band.  here you Anderson, Barre, Bunker, Cornick, and Evan.

    F.... G....

    Can't leave out Jeffrey...

    F.... G....

Only that it has always been the Ian Anderson Band, with varying degrees of influence by other bend members, with the exception of two albums perhaps: This Was, which was co-written by Mick Abrahams, and Under Wraps, which was co-written by Peter-John Vettese, and which has the only Tull song where Martin Barre is listed as a co-writer.

  49. J.... G....

What a great collection of pics for this great video of one of my favourite old Tull tracks!

  50. M.... N....

One of my all time favorite "acoustic" song's by Ian Anderson. Also love "Nursie".
This song always gave me images of what Blackpool must have looked like when Ian wrote the song.

  51. W.... ....

    oh blackpool.

  52. A.... ....

    one of his best....

  53. J.... M....

"I'm going up the Pool, from down the smoke below. To taste me Mum's jam sarnies, and see our Auntie Flo. The candy-floss salesman ...watches ladies in the sand, down four freaky weekends, in the hope that they'll be meeting Mr. Universe! The iron tower smiles down, upon the silver... sea... and along the Gold Mile, they'll be swigging mugs of tea... . The politicians there, who've come to take the air, while posing for the daily Press, will look around and blame the mess on Edward Beer!"

  54. J.... M....

Nothing rare about it. Just go and find it, it's there. But such a track is... rare.

  55. s.... z....

    I NEED A FREAKY WEEKEND !!!

  56. a.... ....

At this point the band was very current, at least in America. It's always exciting to
discover a new band, and when you find out they've made a couple of records already you
rush out and buy those as well. You feel proud: 'I found this band.' People were doing
that to us, so it seemed a good time to put all our hard-to-find tracks on an album.
    - Ian Anderson

  57. S.... ....

My goodness, haven't heard this for years! Great post! Brings back happy memories of my time at Uni ...

    S.... ....

mine too!! 69 to 72 ! What a time it was!

  58. D.... S....

thanks for sharing this...btw I heard a interview with Ian Anderson on local talk radio show in Los Angeles early this morning...the mans insight and knowledge of the world is amazing...

  59. F.... ....

its my dad fault,I was brought up on pink floyd, jethro tull, led zepplin,be bop deluxe, isnt funny now that i am in my mid forties I am listenening to what my dad used to play lol

  60. S.... M....

Jam Sarnies are a sandwich with jam in the bread. When times were tough money wise and you couldn`t afford cheese or ham ,you opened the jar of jam and spread that on your sandwich.

  61. S.... M....

And see our Auntie Flo,which is short for Florence

  62. M.... C....

thank you for the upload aqualung!

  63. m.... s....

I'd forgotten just how much I love this song! Thanks......

  64. I.... ....

The line-up for this (and Life's a Long Song, Dr. Bogenbroom and From Later) was Anderson, Barre, Evans, Hammond and Barlow. Yet, we get to see Hammond and Evans in one or two, and a seemingly endless stream of the "Stand Up" quartet with Cornik and Bunker... now, what's this, eh ;-)

  65. I.... ....

The photos accompanying the track here aren't quite appropriate.

  66. F.... G....

The 2nd to last photo in this video (I believe) has Tony Iommi.

  67. R.... L....

" . . . And see our ANTIC FLOW," goddammit!

  68. T.... ....

I, too, got LIVING IN THE PAST for Christmas 1972, and played it till the grooves were worn flat. I can't believe how fresh and .... well, timeless this song sounds 40 years later. 40 YEARS!
I love the skill of the seemingly offhand stream of consciousness lyrics.

    A beaut!

  69. b.... b....

    what a classic little ditty

  70. R.... ....

    Love this song

  71. d.... ....

    @wmacisaac

You know they refer to Jam sandwiches.

  72. F.... ....

    best feel-good song ever, awesome!

  73. d.... B....

After all these decades, Anderson's genius only becomes more and more apparent as the music stands up (sorry) to the test of time. I don't care what anyone says about the other "prog" and even pop rock greats thru time, I.A. stands - and remains - above them all.

  74. b.... ....

they should blast this out of giant speakers al the way along the sea front !

  75. t.... ....

@jrcp61 yeah very well put indeed- i agree, times were so innocent then..

  76. s.... ....

    @iluvflagunlaws edwards pier

  77. M.... ....

This song came to mind after watching Blackpool earn promotion to the Premiership yesterday in thrilling fashion. Surely the chorus is worth of a crowd singalong! I got Living in the Past for Christmas in 1972, always loved this quirky little song. Thanks for keeping it in circulation. Cheers, alan

  78. F.... K....

    @iluvflagunlaws
    On that wood Peer?

  79. F.... K....

@iluvflagunlaws : cheers, mate, send me a message when you do! :-)

  80. F.... K....

It may sound funny that I am a Jethro Tull fan in spite of the fact that I lived behind the iron curtain before 90, and it must seem odd that I know weird Jethro Tull song but this is my absolute, most favourite Jethro song. Thanks for posting it, greetings from Hungary.

    F.... K....

Why Funny ??? afterall It was a hot night in Buda-Pest !!!!

    F.... K....

    Tell Orban Viktor hello !!!!

  81. D.... C....

masterpiece...masterpiece...masterpiece..masterpiece...Ian Anderson has served his muse well..he has this ability to make to most mundane topic into the most exqiuistely ornate..case it point...this track just tickles the ears to death!

  82. R.... ....

    Ian the word smith

  83. J.... D....

Yes a great little song with a lot of feeling and nostalgia attached to it , reminding me of my stomping days. Thanks for the post.

  84. D.... ....

Brought up on Tull, in my youth , great stuff, saw them in Dundee Caird hall back in the early seventies , happy daze in deed

  85. m.... ....

"There'll be buckets, spades and bingo, cockles, mussels, rainy days, seaweed and sand castles, icy waves. Deck chairs rubber dingies, old vests, braces dangling down, sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze."
