Jethro Tull - Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day Lyrics

Meanwhile back in the year One --- when you belonged to no-one ---
you didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
`Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society ---
one day you'll wake up in the Present Day ---
a million generations removed from expectations
of being who you really want to be.

Skating away ---
skating away ---
skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

So as you push off from the shore,
won't you turn your head once more --- and make your peace with everyone?
For those who choose to stay,
will live just one more day ---
to do the things they should have done.
And as you cross the wilderness, spinning in your emptiness:
you feel you have to pray.
Looking for a sign
that the Universal Mind (!) has written you into the Passion Play.

Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

And as you cross the circle line, the ice-wall creaks behind ---
you're a rabbit on the run.
And the silver splinters fly in the corner of your eye ---
shining in the setting sun.
Well, do you ever get the feeling that the story's
too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage, and it seems like
you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

  8. n.... r....

I saw them in the late 60's. I was tripping and during the show Ian seemed to bounce back and forth from looking like Jesus to an evil spirit. Regardless it was a great concert.

  9. G.... T....

This was my favorite song when I was 13. I thought Jethro Tull was speaking directly to me. I still love this song.

  10. j.... ....

Madonna making it into the Rock n Roll hall of shame and not Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull is all you need to know about that sham of an organization...

  11. B.... K....

Great song but it's time to go skating away on the thin ice of a new day

  12. k.... ....

When all singers courted kings with songs and those that weren't to become a minstrel became skaliwags, pirates and poets
That made their way by jumping out of alleyways and reciting a verse for a flicked farthling or a swig of rum or a they became babbling idiot that could rhyme but not make sense
And all those ramblings and recitings and poems were lost to society and humanity except through words versus set through ages every gathered and formed into the songs of the day
Sang by scalawags pirates and blabbering idiots reformed called The King's Lost songs

  13. k.... ....

He cut that song short to make people go around the rest the day thinking about it
I think he stole a warlocks spell book

    k.... ....

    he *wrote* that book.

  14. J.... K....

Meanwhile back in the year one Los Angeles is still full of punkers.
Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedies. Sure we skate like this.

  15. D.... M....

    A true genius, Ian Anderson

  16. C.... 1....

Oh wow , instant flashback to my college days 😝😜 - Lawrence KS - yess!

Jethro Tull needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who's with me!

    T.... B....

I agree totally.i have loved Jethro till for years.his music sends me to another time.

    T.... B....

Nominate them and get back to me...you know the moody blues didn't get in until 2017 or 2018...some of the greatest seem to have slipped through the cracks.

    T.... B....

    Donna Summer and not Tull?

  19. D.... Z....

The greatest storyteller of the 20th century.

  20. m.... t....

Crys-Cast. So throw your contentment of stones...at the eater's edge, skipping rocks

  21. T.... J....

I want to skate away on the fragile paper thin ice of a new day but it is so dangerous I may crack it and fall through into perdition but it calls me like the sun on a beautiful spring day. I want to step out and on it and onward go to a newness

  22. C.... E....

So great to drive up into the mountains of Colorado as a teen listening to this, racing. Dodging my mortality. Exploring all the beautiful teenage girls growing up in those mountains. Alas, it was never forever BUT this song rewards me the memories earned back then. Cheers!

  23. D.... D....

Many years ago I listened to Ian and Tull in concert when Skating Away was just out. Ian hushed the audience, "save your cheers for later". This is complicated and we need to concentrate on the timing. What happened next was MAGICAL. I agree. Layer after layer of instrument voices. Count them.

    D.... D....

Saw it live also, was the highlight of the show.

  24. a.... ....

One of the best songs ever.♥ Skating away...

  25. k.... ....

Lyrics Below: "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day"

Meanwhile back in the year One --- when you belonged to no-one ---
you didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
`Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society ---

    Skating away ---
    skating away ---
skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.

    G.... N....

I believe it's "suspending in your emptiness..." Suspend- to hang by attachment to something above. The old Universal Mind??

  28. M.... S....

I swear Ian channeled some kind of portal in this song. Achingly beautiful and haunting.

  29. S.... S....

Twice blessed witness!!! Live does it!!!

  30. B.... ....

As song titles go this takes a bit of beating. Of course the song itself is top notch too.

  31. d.... c....

    Stonecadle! Stonecandle 9

  32. J.... G....

Wow what a great tune, "so as you push from the shore, wont you turn your head once more, and make peace with everyone" that just about covers it all! Tull is a great group, Ian is awesome, thank you so much for your tunes!

  33. F.... F....

I can't believe this doesn't have more views.

  34. K.... K....

One of the coolest live acts of the early 70s. great songwriting too.

  35. S.... S....

Listening to Anderson since sixteen yars 'old' I fondly, having seen two of their live performances in a word exquisite.

  36. S.... S....

Surely one of the very finest Tull songs. Nothing like it!

  37. C.... M....

    I really like this song.

  38. J.... D....

My God I just love this song.....

  39. m.... ....

    Magical!

  40. k.... ....

Always hoped Toller Cranston would create a skating routine to this song. He's the only person who could have done it justice. Shame it never happened.

  41. p.... s....

My older cousins would play this on sweltering summer nights so that the whole neighborhood could enjoy it! 1970’s, we were dancing in the street.

  42. D.... P....

    Mis favoritos desde ....siempre.

    D.... P....

To hell with the rock and roll hall of fame

  43. R.... C....

The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame should be ashamed of themselves that this band isn't in there .😓

  44. K.... O....

If you don't like Tull, you don't like rock. Period

  45. A.... C....

Always will continue to listen , for ever .........

  46. M.... ....

    ian anderson is a god

  47. J.... C....

    Great !!
With some rythmic surprises on that song!👏

  48. a.... m....

Phenomenal. In tears before the first chorus. My childhood soundtrack. What a talent

  49. D.... S....

    Ian Anderson is greatness

  50. J.... P....

One of the best "ballads" ever. With amazing lyrics.

  51. P.... E....

There are no walls in the way, unless you put them there.

  52. T.... S....

did you you ever get the feeling that the stories too damn real and in the present tense or that everyone else is on the stage and it seems like your the only person sitting in the audience ?

  53. r.... ....

I'll be going up the chimney to this tune

  54. s.... s....

I heard this in concert in the mid sevenitys, a beautiful experience!

  55. s.... c....

Try Wondering aloud again.Word are amazing

  56. R.... C....

My first concert in 1973. Blew me away. This was when folks passed around weed and seeds popped in them. Burned a small hole in a new shirt. Explain that to MOM!

  57. w.... t....

first time i heard this band was on a real to real tape in the 70s

  58. W.... R....

I get to see this wonderful band in concert July 8th!!!

  59. D.... B....

And make your peace with everyone. If you can do this, you have achieved more in life than most. Keep trying, the peace you give will only reflect in yourself.

  60. R.... L....

Takes me back, such a unique sound ...I think that is what attracted me to Tull, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Floyd, Kansas and Rush. You knew what you were listening to because of there unique qualities and sound styles. Nothing quite like any of them today. Always brilliant!

  61. C.... M....

    ✨⭐🌙💫Ageless Mystical Poetry🌙⭐✨💫

  62. n.... ....

And as you cross the circle line
Well, the ice wall creaks behind
You're a rabbit on the run

  63. W.... H....

Tull is not in the RRHOF because of Jan Wenner and any crony@ Rolling Stone, who love simpler music that was "real rock & Roll".
They thought all the interesting changes that occur in Prog, were useless, awkward, ill focused, meandering, whatever.
Some of the reviews were tepid to bad. At the same time, Tull shot to one of the top 5 supergroups in the fucking world for a few years.
Realizing RS had shit on their face, like any GOP turd, they've hid under ignorance and shame for ever doubting. They've only recently let in Prog groups to surreptitiously and slowly wipe the shit from their faces.
Like many corporations, they deviate from their original Manifest. RS was originally a counter culture rag and should have embraced the uniqueness ofTull. Money morph's them into pop culture promoters, where the biggest seller wins. Quality and depth isn't what todays average joes would want.

  64. L.... K....

Saw them and they did not disappoint. Thanks for the video , brought back floods of memories

  65. h.... ....

How is it that they're not in the R and R HOF?

  66. M.... J....

    Happy Birthday David!

  67. P.... H....

The layers, and more layers, and the capture of all senses. What a master

  68. S.... ....

looking for a sign that the Universal Mind has written you into the Passion Play - a deep line tossed off in passing - great song writing

  69. E.... T....

One of my favorite incarnations of the band!

  70. D.... B....

What is the song I most often sing in the shower?
    This.

  71. E.... D....

2:43 is the sweet spot, makes my heart soar every time I hear that sublime transition.

  72. R.... H....

Why is this man and his band not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet? Write letters people! Although... perhaps he would not appreciate it...

  73. K.... J....

Jethro Tull say no more... this song makes me feel like lacing up the skates but I need 2 hip replacements and I hope I can just walk again without pain

  74. G.... S....

what a wonderful song. talented band - one of the best during the day

  75. J.... K....

When I first heard this on the 'lectric radio knew I was born to be a skater.
Tai Babylonia and all that. Venice Beach and rollerblades. I was bought and sold
to society. Meanwhile back in the year one I can do that.
Jethro wrote this song about me. It's Ian Anderson of course.
Sure I was bred for humanity exactly like this. It's a raree.

  76. J.... K....

Yeah this is about skatin', it's the Ice Capades and we'll not fall.
Meanwhile back in the year one we didn't expect this. Of course I can skate and
I'm written into the passion play. I fall but it's just ice and the zamboni will fix my divots.
I'd prefer frozen Canadian lakes but Pasadena will do.

  77. r.... ....

There's a live 1980 performance of this with an electric mandolin chiming in; it is sublime.

  78. B.... L....

Song makes me smile----doesn't it for you all??

  79. m.... ....

It's interesting, I feel like this song was dismissed in its day as being too "pop" sounding, but now with the perspective of age I can really relate to the lyrics. "So as you push off from the shore,
won't you turn your head once more
and make your peace with everyone?
For those who choose to stay,
will live just one more day
to do the things they should have done."

  80. F.... G....

Not bad for a pig farmer...look it up....

  81. W.... C....

It's just that good. These songs holding water 30 years later.

  82. D.... M....

It is quite the shame that so many people know Jethro Tull as Aqualung and Locomotive Breath and little else. I've seen this band 5 times and it is always shocking the musical talent from all of them. My son plays the flute because of Ian Anderson and mostly their Christmas Album. I may be wrong but I just don't here this level of musicianship around anymore.

  83. G.... G....

' Cause you were bred for humanity/and sold to society/one day you'll wake up in the present day/ a million generations/removed from expectations/ of being who you really want to be.
Yep, that's the modern world for you

  84. R.... M....

    Sounds like Classic to me

  85. C.... M....

    Unknown"y"NIGHT'

  86. K.... M....

I kinda wish I was a hippy. Bloody awesome music, I just wanna dance around a bonfire.

  87. W.... ....

This is a song where the members of the group play each others borrowed and assorted and unpaid for instruments...... like and comment if you know where this is from!

    W.... ....

    Bursting Out .....

    W.... ....

@Dim G First record, first side, after intro, No Lulaby and Sweet Dream..... 🎸😜

  88. J.... ....

    Tull for life.

  89. W.... V....

    it’s a song about “now”’
    what is now?
    What doe that mean?
Now starts in the year one
    Moves on over generations
    One day “now” becomes “your”
Your conscience this day, on this split second this “now”
“you'll wake up, in the present day
A million generations removed from expectations
Of being who you really want to be”
because you, your world, has become a reality not an expectations anymore of past generations
    you are what you are
    time is what is is
every moment is thin, and can break,
can end, you can die, everything can change in are spilt second
    in every now
Some wil elave us that day,
will leave the building of time
For those who choose to stay
Will live just one more day
they stay until this day - the day of their dead.

    as you grow older
    times becomes frightful
    there is little time left
“now” sounds more urgent because you
    cross the circle line
the the ice wall of time, creaks behind, your day’s are beginning to creak under your feet and You're a rabbit on the run
While the silver splinters of seconds fly
In the corner of your eye
Shining in the setting sun of the new day coming.
Well this is your life, this is everybody’s life
    and
Well, do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
    And in the present tense?
Now you look at it for a moment is is
as if everybody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
    Person sitting in the audience?
