Jethro Tull - One Brown Mouse Lyrics

Smile your little smile --- take some tea with me awhile.
Brush away that black cloud from your shoulder.
Twitch your whiskers. Feel that you're really real.
Another tea-time --- another day older.

Puff warm breath on your tiny hands.
You wish you were a man
who every day can turn another page.
Behind your glass you sit and look
at my ever-open book ---
One brown mouse sitting in a cage.

Do you wonder if I really care for you ---
Am I just the company you keep ---
Which one of us exercises on the old treadmill ---
Who hides his head, pretending to sleep?

Smile your little smile --- take some tea with me awhile.
And every day we'll turn another page.
Behind our glass we'll sit and look
at our ever-open book ---
One brown mouse sitting in a cage.

Jethro Tull One Brown Mouse Comments

I sometimes compare Genesis to Jethro Tull. Concerning mouse Songs it´s 2 to 1 for Tull.

  2. M.... ....

Ian Anderson, eternal genius as profound as Mozart and poetically a master of his art. One of a kind. Bound to live on forever. I feel blessed to have been born in a time when he made music for my ears. Love love love.

    In memory of a mouse...

Tragic to think this mouse is now dead. À bientôt Monsieur Souris.

What an ebullient song. Going to play it for my English students with whom I am compelled to analytically torture to death "Of Mice And Men", for which I usually have them read Burns's little apology to a mouse. Maybe it'll cheer us all up...

    J.... S....

Why does every anglophone school study that book? Probably because it's short and the moral questions are obvious...

    J.... S....

while this is an excellently crafted and executed song, "ebullient" isn't an adjective I would use to describe it.

    J.... S....

    Hmm. Maybe I meant "ebola".

  12. K.... C....

    Great song

  17. C.... M....

💘 Loves The Sound of jethro Tull.

  18. R.... 6....

An ode to a mouse ~ only Ian could see that as a song.

    R.... 6....

And whoever wrote the song Ben. Although that was a rat.

    R.... 6....

    Burns did that centuries ago.

    R.... 6....

Ian said that this song as much an ode to Robert Burns as it is to a mouse. Or, as Ian said, "Burns, had he been able to tune his guitar, would have certainly written this song."

    R.... 6....

@Holdenon3 This sounds right. He's always been very proud of his Scottish origins . He may not sound it when he speaks, but Anderson does have solid Scottish connections and like many of his generation would have been exposed to Burns at an early age.

    R.... 6....

@Anon B Jethro Tulls music is global! Ian Anderson is proud of his scottish origins and all of us are proud of Ian Anderson!
