Jethro Tull - Fallen On Hard Times Lyrics

Fallen on hard times --- but it feels good to know
that milk and honey's just around the bend.
Running on bad lines --- we'd better run as we go,
Tear up, tear up the overdraft again.

Oh, dear Prime Minister --- it's all such a mess.
Go right ahead and pull the rotten tooth.
Oh, Mr. President --- you've been put to the test.
Come clean, for once, and hit us with the truth.

Looking for sunshine --- oh but it's black and it's cold
Yet, you say that milk and honey's just round the bend.
Giving us a hard time, my friends
handing us the same line again.

Fallen on hard times --- and there's nowhere to hide
Now they've re-possessed the Rolls Royce and the mink.

Turning on the peace sign --- and it's back to the wood.
Soon there will be raised a holy stink.

Somebody wake me. I've been sleeping too long.
Oh, I don't have to take this lying down.
You can keep your promises. Shove `em where they belong.
Don't ask me to the party --- won't be around.

Anyone who gave this a thumbs down is a dumb ass. I am done.

Beautiful tune! I had just graduated from college. Started digging JT in 9th grade. Here we are in ‘19 and it’s not only sounding just as good as it did in 82, but I’m a smarter man. I know the 82 recession was the meaning of the song...But

Having fallen on hard times myself here and there, I realize that as usual Ian has it right. I’ve already drank the milk and that peanut butter and honey sandwich was the perfect compliment.

Great song from a great album. Love the glockenspiel. Ian's voice was good in those days!

Fallen on hard times. We've fallen on hard times.
Fallen on hard times. If you read between the lines.
    Fallen on hard times.

    recession of '82

  8. s.... ....

Classic music from Ian and the boys. I cannot believe how it is still fresh after many years.

    One of the best

  11. D.... ....

    such a good song.

Did Jethro Tull the band ever have a song about Jethro Tull the man?

    m.... ....

Yes, I think so. A bonus track from Heavy Horses sessions seems to be about the book that Jethro Tull wrote called Horse Hoeing Husbandry. Good song too.

    m.... ....

Yes, it does have a sort of a John Barleycorn feel about it.

    m.... ....

@Steven Haywood Yes, I was going to say the same...I believe that's the only song they've done that referenced Jethro Tull the agriculturalist. I can't tell if the song is finished the way it is, but could have been a great fit for the Heavy Horses album, what with the "farm and field" theme of the album.

Ian also has songs recorded at St Bartholomew's Church where Jethro Tull is buried. There's a picture of Ian walking by a tombstone with Jethro's name on it.

    Their best album for me!

    C.... ....

Every Jethro Tull album is excellent. You just have to listen to it enough to appreciate it. Tull is an acquired taste. Every new album takes some getting used to.

    C.... ....

i sorta agree with this premise...

    C.... ....

That's exactly what my experience was, even though I was a devout fan and lover of prog when these songs were new!  Ian's eclectic range kept you guessing where he was goin next.  Eventually our mind pieces together the challenge of his well thought-out song structures,  and the words begin to have meaning...
A Passion Play took 2 listens,  but I recognized all the amazing parts and soon the cohesive flow becomes apparent!

    C.... ....

    ...totally AGREE!!!

  15. K.... M....

    Excellent album.
