Jethro Tull - Budapest Lyrics

I think she was a middle-distance runner...
(the translation wasn't clear).
Could be a budding stately hero.
International competition in a year.
She was a good enough reason for a party...
(well, you couldn't keep up on a hard track mile)
while she ran a perfect circle.
And she wore a perfect smile
in Budapest... hot night in Budapest.

We had to cozzy up in the old gymnasium...
dusting off the mandolins and checking on the gear.
She was helping out at the back-stage...
stopping hearts and chilling beer.
Yes, and her legs went on for ever.
Like staring up at infinity
through a wisp of cotton panty
along a skin of satin sea.
Hot night in Budapest.

You could cut the heat, peel it back with the wrong side of a knife.
Feel it blowing from the sidefills. Feel like you were playing for your life
(if not the money).
Hot night in Budapest.

She bent down to fill the ice box
and stuffed some more warm white wine in
like some weird unearthly vision
wearing only T-shirt, pants and skin.
You know, it rippled, just a hint of muscle.
But the boys and me were heading west
so we left her to the late crew
and a hot night in Budapest.
It was a hot night in Budapest.

She didn't speak much English language...
(she didn't speak much anyway).
She wouldn't make love, but she could make good sandwich
and she poured sweet wine before we played.

Hey, Budapest, cha, cha, cha. Let's watch her now.

I thought I saw her at the late night restaurant.
She would have sent blue shivers down the wall.
But she didn't grace our table.
In fact, she wasn't there at all.
Yes, and her legs went on forever.
Like staring up at infinity.
Her heart was spinning to the west-lands
and she didn't care to be
that night in Budapest.
Hot night in Budapest.

Amazing Intro and Outro..... listening on and on

  24. E.... O....

Parece mas dire straits que Jehtro tull.

  25. 2.... ....

I am a huge fan of old JT. This relatively newer song lacks the magic of Ian's voice when he was younger. Also, the flute is not as great as it was in 70s. Then this song resembles sounds of Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits.

  26. P.... W....

I came in like a raven ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  27. M.... ....

It seems a song of dire straits 😉

    M.... ....

    Mark Knopfler???? Very similar...

  29. D.... V....

This is an artistic masterpiece of great epic..Tull at their very very best..the music in total harmony..all the instruments..creating an audible symphony unlike most!

  30. A.... G....

was she a real lady, who could she be? this middle distance runner...<3

  31. R.... P....

This song is a foundation for some of the songs on Tull's latter album, Roots to Branches. In particular Wounded, Old and Treacherous.

I love ian Anderson and tull.

  35. s.... s....

    Master piece....

  36. M.... ....

JT is so special, no such band existed and never will.

  37. H.... ....

I legit thought it was Knopfler on vocals

    H.... ....

So did I, apparently though it's just Ian Anderson after severe throat problems.

  38. j.... c....

Sounds very Dire Straits-ish. And that's not a bad thing.

  39. L.... ....

    give this men a Grammy!

    D.... C....

@Robert Roth I thought Budapest was released in 1987. Dire Straits sent their out their first demo tape in 1977.

  52. k.... ....

  71. c.... ....

It does make you wonder if Knoppfler was listening to alot of Tull.

  72. a.... ....

Is this Mark Knopfler singing? It doesn't sound at all like Ian Anderson...

  73. M.... S....

From 1987 and I had missed it!

  74. A.... S....

And for you who wasn´t there, tha fact is that Jethro Tull was a famous band 1967 several years before Dire Straits 1977. If JT reminds you about DS it´s the other way around. Jethro Tull was first with that sound. Why compare?

    A.... S....

Jethro Tull never sounded like this before Dire Straits. There is clearly an influence ... what is so bad about that?

    A.... S....

@justgivemethetruth It's a nice bit of reciprocity because Tull and Martin Barre inspired Mark Knopfler before Dire Straits were a thing. On Crest of a Knave Tull were clearly inspired by DS.

  75. L.... H....

I first heard this song on the Bob Harris show on BBC radio.. And yes, I immediately thought it was Dire Straits!... whatever, it quickly became one of my all time favourite songs!!.. God bless 'whispering' Bob Harris!

  76. A.... S....

Remember dancing and drinking and singing....

  77. L.... M....

    Looks like Dire Straits

  78. R.... P....

Ian Anderson does almost a perfect take on Mark Knopfler in this particular song and another one from same album (Crest of a knave) " Said She is a dancer" but Can Mark sing like Ian?
Tull is one of the most unique and versatile bands in rock history . Many bands used flute including Progressive rock bands Traffic, King Crimson, Camel and Focus and even a country rock band Marshal Tucker Band ( MTB) and they did it quite well but none made it integral to their music like Tull . MTB comes a close second to JT in making flute essential to their sound

  79. E.... ....

    the flute though... Epic

  84. L.... ....

'You could cut the heat, peel it back with the wrong side of a knife.' That's a very good description of weather in Budapest, which is one of the hottest cities of Europe. It gets to over 40c in the summer.

  85. T.... R....

Anderson's voice is totally shot in this song! But now it's ten times worse...

  89. h.... ....

I wonder if Mark Knoppler ever tried to sue ?

  90. J.... C....

To me, this song is more than just about the city, it’s about the mournful experience of meeting someone who completely captivated you, but only for a fleeting moment, and the sorrowful mysterious tones complement that feeling well. I’m sure everyone here can relate to being served by a waiter at some restaurant that caught your attention on an intellectual level beyond simple lust, but you know you will never see that person again once you leave. That kind of impression is the one I feel from this song.

  91. J.... J....

    Carvalho velho...Iam Anderson

  92. M.... T....

Love the song, but the comments triggered it - reminiscent of dire straits, brothers in arms

    M.... T....
