Jethro Tull - Audition Lyrics

The actors milling helplessly--
The script is blowing out to sea.
But what the hell, we didn't even pass an audition.

The lines you'll have to improvise.
The words are written in the eyes
Of politicians who despise their fathers.

And so the play necessitates
That all you boys participate
In fierce competition to eliminate each other.

And groupies, on their way to war,
Get to write the next film score,
But the rock and roll star knows his glory is really nothing.

Men of religion, on the make,
Pledge an oath they undertake
To make you wise for God's own sake, and none other.

While ladies get their bedding done
To win themselves a bouncing son--
But bad girls do it for the fun of just being.

And me, I'm here to sing along,
And I'm not concerned with righting wrongs,
Just asking questions that belong without an answer.

But God is laughing up his sleeve
As He pours himself another cup of tea,
And He waves good-bye to you and me, at least for now.

Jethro Tull Audition Comments
  1. D.... H....

This version is far superior to what was on Nightcap because that earlier release had newly recorded overdubs and an annoying echo effect to try to help make it all sound like one recording. Steven Wilson stripped that back and we now have clear unvarnished Chateau!

    D.... H....

I totally agree. While working on masters, Steven Wilson done a great job for Chaeteu D'isaster Tapes by staying true to the original sound. Sadly he ruined the album (APP), even used inferior vocal takes.

    D.... H....

@Suha Önder interesting -= I love the added bits, redone dealing flute solo etc - will have to listen more carefully to the singing as it's my fav of Ian's vocally

  2. W.... H....

Another unknown Tull song ( by me) wow. 45 years later!

  3. A.... ....

    Capolavoro 💪

  4. R.... S....

    Absolutely incredible!

  5. G.... L....

where is flute in no rehearsal ?

    G.... L....

This is the original version. Nightcap version from 90's had some flute overdubs by Ian Anderson.

    G.... L....

@Suha Önder I would call it the unfinished version - badly mixed with awful sound. Anderson finished it brilliantly in 1988 (Scenario / Audition / No Rehearsal) and in 1993 (rest of the Chateau tracks).

    G.... L....

Gianfranco Ludovisi Ian couldn't find it, and thats the reason why it was no rehearsal!
Just kiddin' - I miss the flute too. 😜

  6. u.... ....

This is way inferior to the version on 'Nightcap'. It's definitely a case of the emperor's new clothes with Wilson, off with his head I say !!

    u.... ....

I have Nightcap on CD...is this different? I'm listening to this on a computer in bad speakers, is my CD mixed better by Wilson? :)

  7. N.... ....

Wilson is overrated. His mixes have a dated, dry sound. And the versions released earlier with flute added by Ian Anderson are way superior.

    N.... ....

@Stormwatch153 I didn't know his crimes go so deep in the past!?
Oh sorry - you probably mean some remix of Stormwatch.Fortunately I didn't heard it.
He deserves seventh level of Hell, where he gonna be tortured with hip-hop & Rap crap!!!

    N.... ....

@Žarko Kohucz No...his lack of any talent for mixing goes way back in the past...he is doing 40th anniversary new stereo mixes of every Jethro Tull album from the 70's...and he has been doing it for 10 years now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So for the 2019, on the 40th anniversary of the Stormwatch album, he is currently ruining a masterpiece which should not be ruined at all....I just wonder how Ian Anderson lets him play with history, because all those remixes are done with Ian's approval. I just hope that he will not touch A Album in any way......

    N.... ....

@Stormwatch153 Fortunately Jethro Tull have a lot of albums - perhaps something remains in original version!

    N.... ....

@Žarko Kohucz I buy Jethro on vinyl only....and only original editions.

    N.... ....

@Stormwatch153 Of course!Me too, but my old records from 70's are scratched so I listen mostly from CD's

  8. B.... ....

How could this very band diss their own material when it was this good?

    B.... ....

@Žarko Kohucz They may have delivered the impression of friendship, but it was always more of a working atmosphere in Tull, which is why Tony Iommy left, prefering the atmosphere of friendship in Black Sabbath according to an interview. - I can find only one single bass cover of the solo on Youtube which is close to the original; Glenn Cornick's son Drew Cornick commented there: "Normally I'm not typically impressed by people butchering my father's baselines, but you sir have done quite a decent job." - I absolutley agree that from an artistic point of view, IA should focus on studio work. But it seems he enjoys playing on stage way more than working in the studio, even though most nights his voice is almost gone nowadays.

    B.... ....

@NuntiusLegis Ian Anderson, Barlow, Evan, and Hammond were friends from the early days in Blackpoole.(With exception of Geofrey, they all played together in John Evan Band in the pre-Tull era.)Yes, Ian Anderson insists on hard work (morning rehearsals etc)but in the live performances they delivered the impression they are conected not only by official contract.I have courage to say it was more "personality" in every member of the group. In the last 20 years (specialy after Martin's departure) this is just IA & the band wich plays corectly, but for me they are like some kind of shadows on the stage, and Ian cannot even sing "My Sunday Feeling" wich is not vocaly demanding song.

    B.... ....

@Žarko Kohucz I think most of the early songs are demanding for Anderson's present voice, with some notable exceptions: I never heard him fail on Wond'ring Aloud or Jack-In-The-Green. Usually he has less problems with more recent material that was concieved in the studio with his vocal limitations since the mid eighties in mind.

    B.... ....

@NuntiusLegis I agree.I have no objections for his vocal studio work.In fact I like his present voice (for example in the song "Doggerland" from Homo Erraticus)Maybe he can still sing adequatly Wond'ring Aloud, or Life's a Long Song on the stage, but that's not enough for an entire show.

    B.... ....

@Žarko Kohucz Yes, he is still a very charismatic singer in the studio. In concerts, he should play more instrumental music and / or use another singer.

  9. I.... H....

    Masterful !!!!
