Jethro Tull - At Last, Forever Lyrics

So why are you holding my hand tonight?
I'm not intending to go far away.
I'm just slipping through to the back room --
I'll leave you messages almost every day.
And who was I to last forever?
I didn't promise to stay the pace.
Not in this lifetime, babe
but we'll cling together:
some kind of heaven written in your face.

So why are you holding my hand tonight?
Well, am I feeling so cold to the touch?
Do my eyes seem to focus
on some distant point?
Why do I find it hard to talk too much?
And who was I to last forever?
I didn't promise to stay the pace.
Not in this lifetime, babe
but we'll cling together:
some kind of heaven written in your face.

So why are you holding my hand tonight?
I'm not intending to go far away.
I'm just slipping through to the back room --
I'll leave you messages almost every day.
And who was I to last forever?
I didn't promise to stay the pace.
Not in this lifetime, babe
but we'll cling together:
some kind of heaven written in your face.

la musica dei jethro tull è una cosa che più la ascolti e più ti risveglia tantissime cose che pensami fossero state dimenticate e invece basta cercare all' interno della propria anima in qualche piccolo angolo sedimentato.

I'm 26 now I will always treasure this band. My dad insisted I hear Aqualung and Thick As A Brick on a car ride when I was about 13. Those albums really stuck with me and at 18 I decided on a whim to pick them up and then some. Slowly built my Jethro Tull collection and eventually owned all of their albums. I returned the favor to my dad by sharing their post-Heavy Horses catalog to him as he started focusing on other music around that time. He loved the later stuff every bit as much as the albums he knew. He passed in 2012 but the times we spent listening to and sharing music will never leave me.. Tull is in my top 5 favorite bands. Truly timeless. This song is a masterpiece.

Симфонично, фантастично и мистично!!! Нет слов! В начале 90-х воспроизводимая на дешевом китайском кассетничке эта песня повергала нашу компанию в трансовый ступор, когда стихали последние звуки, все долго молчали....

  10. 2.... ....

Roots to Branches is their best post-Stormwatch album...some brilliant stuff on it. Like this song...

I feel very fortunate indeed that Jethro Tull recorded music during my younger man life. I now enjoy Jethro Tull music and all the memories that go with it. Thanks for what looks like to me a life of hard work - priestly actually.

My husband who had cancer and knew he was going to pass away chose this song for his funeral. He was a great Jethro Tull fan and originally wanted no service just for people to listen the music of jethro. The song although it makes me very sad it also gives me comfort.

    P.... K....

@Peggy Evans Thank you for sharing your loss with us Tull fans.

    P.... K....

Penny King , Your husband sounds lovely and a great Jethro Tull fan. What a beautiful, beautiful song he chose for the service. I am glad it comforts you.

George Henderson , thank you sir for leaving such a lovely, kind comment in response.
Judging by your other comments you are a great Tull fan, and a lovely, kind, compassionate human being too.
    God bless you sir!

@Steven Haywood I plan to have this played at my funeral. I will follow it with, " "Cheerio."

  18. b.... ....

The most underrated JT album....one of his best works

    b.... ....

I wore this one out as a teen

    b.... ....

badumpy , I agree. A most amazing album. As Ian's voice declined so the standard and beauty of musicianship increased to compensate. The result is just so astonishingly beautiful.

When I lost my Mum to cancer back in 2007 this song helped me keep it together somehow.....some of Ian's most poignant lyrics and a wonderfully crafted tune....timeless......

  20. M.... ....

    Wonderful song...

  21. C.... P....

I saw them on tour when this album was released they played most of it before taking a break and returning to play their classics. I had not heard the album yet before the concert and went out to buy it the next day. I liked this song the best when i heard them play it and it has become my favorite song by them

    C.... P....

So many great Tull songs to choose from, but I will call this one of their best for sure.

  22. a.... ....

    best album by tull

    a.... ....

I think so many of their albums are the best. ;-)

    a.... ....

I find that I have to listen to Tull albums several times before I really fall in love with them. So many of their albums are fantastic, but I didn't realize it the first time I listened to them.

  23. U.... ....

The lyrics, you must listen to the words. If you have ever seen a little bit of heaven written in the face of someone you love, then you know what the song is about.

  24. P.... ....

    Wonderful!

Anthoxanthum , one of the best of so, so many songs written by Ian , that are lovely, wonderful, beautiful and poignant in their own way.
    sttgaegoaktd

  30. P.... ....

I know that many Jethro Tull fans will disagree, but I think that this is one of Ian Anderson's finest songs. The lyrics are so poignant and the piano and flute are just beautiful.

    P.... ....

    ye you're right

    P.... ....

Seems a bit of a hats-off, to their old Wond'ring Aloud tune off Aqualung.

    P.... ....

I'm a Tull fan and I do agree with you. It's a great song... I guess Ian didn't think so as it was not much played live.... But Ian is the worst judge of his own works, I'm afraid. This is my favourite track out of "Roots...", which I consider as one of the strongest Tull albums.. But I prefer the folk and prog/classical edge of Tull, not so much the blues/jazz side.

    P.... ....

@Marc Moingeon So you prefer TAAB, Passion Play, and Songs From the Wood? Those are my favorites along with this album. In that order. But It's hard to say with JT. I read that Ian leaned flute in two weeks, before playing live. Prodigy, like Mozart. He probably is Mozart!

    P.... ....

Hi Wallace. Well, my top favourite Tull albums are Heavy Horses, Stormwatch (I'm eager to have the 40th anniversary box set of that album that'll be released in October, if I remember well) , Songs From The Woods, Broadsword & the Beast (the first I bought along with Aqualung back in 1982), Minstrel in the Gallery, Thick As a Brick.... and Crest Of A Knave. I like Aqualung a lot of course but maybe I heard it too much. I must confess that A Passion Play was a bit hard to swallow when I was maybe 17, although I love the first vocal melody. I think Ian's voice is really at his best on this album, but don't you think there is quite a lot of jazz and blues elements on it, in spite of a certain classical influence in the "Fulham Road" melody ? The saxophone isn't too much my cup of tea (at least not in JT), I much prefer Ian playing flute and classical guitar. And it's very complicated, especially the second half.. The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles is ... well, a little bit over-the-top.... ;o)) I bought the remastered CD nevertheless, but not the box set released only a few years ago.
Yes, I think Ian is really not a common musician. He chose to be a singer but he's quite proficient on several instruments... I've been a subscriber to "A New Day", the independant fanzine, for a number of years and I seem to remember that in one interview, he mentioned how much he played quite simple things on flute until the late 80's and then worked really hard on it (it's true there are lots of it and quite sophisticated parts on Rock Island and Roots To Branches, actually). I think he was a fine classical/acoustic guitar player in the mid-seventies... Ritchie Blackmore said he was a very good acoustic guitar player, in an interview I read. Ian, is one of his heroes, anyway, as you may know. All the best. :)

  31. R.... C....

I agree Schnuffelyugi. Thanks for uploading.

  32. H.... K....

love this. this album came out when I was in high school...at the height of Bon Jovi and all the big hair band crap...and I remember listening to this CD a lot.... :)

    H.... K....

"...height of Bon Jovi and all the big hair band crap..." <-?

This album came out in '95. Pretty sure we had already moved well into the grunge era, by this point. ;)

  33. M.... ....

First time listening to this one, in fact almost all of this album passed me by! love it! Jethro Tull still mesmerises and enthralls me! Beautiful!

  34. M.... S....

One of the greatest groups period

  35. J.... A....

Sublime song on the highest quality with a certain Medieval touch, comparable to Tull's greatest work, even to "Thick as a Brick". It evidences that Ian Anderson countinued to experience extraordinary moments of musical clarity up into the latest years of the band's career. Ian, maestro de maestros!

  36. r.... ....

Este es un gran album como todos los de Jethro Tull, pero Aqualung...es Aqualung!!!

    r.... ....

    ...Exactamente!!!

  37. l.... ....

May I recommend the concert with Jethro Tull from Madison Square garden, 1978. It is golden.

  38. A.... ....

    @Setri123 Hey aqualung

  39. 1.... ....

My Dad hates most rock music but I played this to him and explained how it made me feel - he got it too! That's the power of great music - it can move you to tears and fill your heart with joy all at the same time! Thank you Mr Anderson.

  40. 1.... ....

In particular, the line 'I'll leave you messages almost everyday' really connected with me - because I would see something or hear something almost everyday that made me think of Mum, even if only for just a moment. It really felt as if whatever it was that made me think of her had been placed there by her - just a little message to let me know that she was and always will be, still there - just in a different room, that's all.

  41. 1.... ....

After my dear mum passed away I found it very difficult to listen to any music for a good few weeks. When I did, this was the first song I played and it really helped me to come to terms with the sense of loss I was feeling.

  42. p.... ....

Este album es una obra de arte.

    p.... ....

Muy cierto, una de las tantas obras musicales del maestro, genio, músico y poeta del sr. Ian Anderson.

  43. A.... M....

    Faboluso...

  44. L.... V....

this album is so underrated ... I prefer much more this than Aqualung

    L.... V....

I've been a huge Tull fan since the late 60's. for me, this album is one of their very best. Poignant, sophisticated and worldly. A masterpiece!

    L.... V....

It is awesome, but, please, do not compare it to Aqualung, which is IMHO, one of the greatest masterpieces in History's music.

    L.... V....

Andres Martingano - I would rank this album higher than Aqualung as well.

  45. P.... ....

Thanks, Schnuffelyugi for uploading this great song. So few people know this. I think it's their best song from this album- Roots to branches. Once a friend of mine lent it me more than 10 years ago. And I have been never heard it any more... Till this day...
