Aside from the great Mr Cash, Waylon was my next favourite country singer, but this doesn't work for me. Even at his most gentle and vulnerable on songs like Amanda, he kept that authentic "outlaw" edge to his voice. This sounds almost like he was listening to the Righteous Bros in the cans as he was singing and got caught up in that sweet as syrup delivery they had. I'm not very interested in U2, but when they covered Unchained Melody they at least had a go at taking a great pop song and putting it in a contemporary setting that suited their sound and strengths. Waylon took a great pop song and pretty much slapped a cookie cutter down on it. With the chops he had, he could have lifted the tempo, put some steel guitar or even some slide on it, a little bass and maybe some brushes and made it a Waylon song. I'd have liked to hear that.
