Jennings, Waylon - The Road Lyrics
Back home the family's eatin' dinner
There's a fire in the fireside warm and bright
But I won't be there today 'cause I've got a debt to pay
And they don't let black sheep stray from the road.
No they don't let black sheep stray from the road.
My throat is out crying for water
Lord, that wind is blowing cold
That guard is watching me like a hawk up in the tree
And I'm longing to be free from the road
Yes, I'm longing to be free from the road.
Every bone inside my body's aching
And that guard don't care if I live or die
He told me yesterday son don't try to get away
For I'll lay you down to stay by the road

Jennings, Waylon The Road Comments
Waylon is my 3rd cousin. My grandma's cousin...I've never listened to any of his music, just dont dig country but I see now I've been missing out. I feel this.
Great song by a great man rip Waylon
That's country. The musicianship is excellent and the vibrato on his voice so powerful and heartfelt. Modern country just can't compete soul wise. Waylon was in a league all his own and he could play the shit out of a telecaster.

No problem. I really got a lot out of reading your comment the first time and just now. I'm just a 21 (about to be 22 in December) year old kid that loves old music, and even though I try to make sure I understand them, it sure is nice to see someone who was there talk about them.
ARosser14 ...10 years later I’m reading your comments lol. I guess your looking forward to your 32 birthday now.
LOL! I just scrolled down and dag gummit I've been here before!
Well, that goes to show how it is.....
Beside Chaingangs, wandering musicians, train drivers, stage drivers & truck drivers each have a common understanding of this song. Whether they be on the road or not.
As a retired trucker, I thought I'd get it out of my system but it's still there. Like a war vet who remembers in flashbacks, the road is still there. It's a prison that doesn't let go. Sometimes it's heaven, sometimes it's hell, sometimes you don't even know.
One of many he did that never got any attention, except for us Waylonites. I played for 25 years, now retired from music at 56. I did this song and no one heard it before, but was requested many times after that. Championed as an "outlaw" but man could he sing.
Like Robbie Robertson said in The Last Waltz, "the road is a Goddamn impossible way to live". Yet some of us cannot escape it, we may not like it sometimes, but we still cannot put down roots. Call it wanderlust or doom, or our nature, but there are those of us who are/must be always on the move.
The story of my life. way to go Waylon!
Amen, good sir.
Mournful song done just right by mighty Waymore !
This song reminds me of my years on the road as a truck driver. It almost sounds like a threefold tribute to us, the homeless and the prisoner. People who are simply down on their luck and cast aside by society. Some day there will be a lot of cast-aways in US. A lot.
Glad you enjoyed/are enjoying it.
Thanks for the info, and recording. What's it on? An album? Sure do love him, but like you discovered him too late!
It was on Love of the Common People. Probably my second favorite of his after Wild Ones. Wish I'd gotten into him earlier, it was summer of '03 when I did, obviously a year and a half after his death.
What a pretty song! Never heard it before. Where's it from? A movie? Sounds like real early Waylon.
