Jennings, Waylon - Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way
To hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for desert.

Then I fumbled through my closet to my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
And I shaved my face and combed my hair
Stumbled down the stair to meet the day.

Well, I'd smoke my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs that I'd been picking
But I lit my first and watched the small kid
Cussing the can that he was kicking.

Then I crossed the empty street and caught
The Sunday smell of someone frying chicken
And it took me back to somethin'
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk
Wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
Makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothing sure to dying
Half as lonesome as the sound
On the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With the laughin' little girl that he was swinging
Then I stopped beside a Sunday school
Listened to the songs they were singing.

I headed back for home and somewhere far away
A lonely bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk
Wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
Makes a body feel alone...

Waylon does everything good. In the early days, I wasn't an Waylon fan, but YOUTUBE introduced me to so much of him. I love him! Best thing he did is "Farewell Party". Better than anybody else.

Of course we know who wrote it, we know Johnny did it and did it wonderfully, Waylon, of course like everything else, did it perfectly, end of story. I love all 3 of them. Sundays are a bitch.

  28. k.... ....

@katson6 to chase a dream. he said that SUndays were quiet and everything around him reminded him of family Sundays together and had never felt so alone which is why he was wishing he was stoned so he didn't have to grasp the reality of it.

  29. k.... ....

@REDLEN308GTB No Mriel, Kirs didn't write it for Waylon. It's actually a self biographical song about a particular Sunday morning he had in Nashville during his early years. As he tell it, he woke up hung over and penniless after spending all night at Tootsie's with his pals. They all had families to go home to except him and as the aroma of Sunday breakfast wafted in the air, he was reminded of how alone he was and that his parents had disowned him for giving up his college education...

    k.... ....

katson6 he didn't give up college education, just did not go on to med school. Was a Rhodes school and Vietnam helicopter pilot.

    k.... ....

katson6 that was a good summary and as close to the truth about where the song came from that I am aware of.

  30. R.... ....

Kris did write this for Waylon, I never stopped playing it

@supermex43 lol...at least you can remember them! It is a great song, one of Kris' best and what else could you ask for but to have Waylon singing it too!
