Jennings, Waylon - Out Among The Stars Lyrics
It's midnight at a liquor store in Texas
I's closin' time another day is done
When a boy walks in the door and points a pistol
Me can't find a job but Lord he's found a gun.
They let the ol' man run out in the street
Even though he knows they'll come with guns a blazin'
And already he can feel that great relief.
Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining
And fly like eagles out among the stars.
He pictures the arrival of the cruisers
He knows that when they're shootin' at this loser
The'll be aiming at the demons in their lives.
Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining
And fly like eagles out among the stars.
Evening news it carries all the details
He dies in every living room in town
In his own a bottle's thrown in anger
And his father cries we'll never live this down.
Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to stop complaining
And fly like eagles out among the stars.
Fly like eagles out among the stars...

Another good song from Waylon
Wow what a version
A head of its time.Waylon's amazing love of life.
adam mitchells is the best
whos adam mitchell?
the guy who wrote it

I think I like this better than Merle's version. I haven't heard Johnny Cash sing it.
Notice Jessie in the background.
NO ONE does this song like Waylon.
No one, I mean NO ONE
Beautiful version - my favourite's still the original - Adam Mitchell, who wrote the song.
A beautiful song..
It is said that an Eagle is the only Bird that will fly in A storm. I like this one Hoss. REST IN PEACE.
Bad times, bad choices.
Love this song. He makes you feel the sadness, his voice the simplicity of the music..he was the best. I'm so glad the music lives on.
Too right - Waylon was the best. There are good country singers out there but Waylon had a voice and style no other can match.
Merle Haggard's version is the one to beat. This one is good, but too up-tempo for the message.
While I love Merle Haggard, he simply tells the story. Waylon forces you to listen to, and live that story.
I have an album with this song, I love it too. I love Merle Haggard, but Waylon did this best and first!
Waylon does a really good version of this song. But I think the absolute best is done by Joe Sun. Check it out. Sun puts real desperation and anguish into the words, which he sings with less of a regular metronome beat than Waylon uses.
I am a die hard fan of Merle Haggard, and I also love Johnny Cash. However, I have to say that in my humble opinion, Waylon's version is the best. Thank god we can still listen to these real country singers.
Thank you Eddie! I love this Waylon song. I finally found it.
It just hit me. John's version is really good but was a bit over produced whereas Waylon's is much more raw and stopped down. Then I realized that John's version was produced by Billy Sherrill, the man responsible for the slick "countrypoliton Nashville sound" that Waylon was chafing against. This is why John's version is really good and Waylon's is really great. Don't get me wrong I love John but it also shows just how creative ( and artistically right) Waylon was.
I think that is what makes Waylon's music so endearing, that he has the ability to strip a song to the bare minimum and make it sound amazing...it is that raw under produced sound of a few instruments and the feeling in his voice that screams authentic and hits you hard in all the right places.
Is that Carter Robertson or Jesse Colter on background vocals? anyone? Actually the more I listen to this I think it's Carter. Man I love this song!!! I love Cash but his is over produced and loses some soul ( still a good song, just not anywhere near this)
Tommy Petersen that's Carter! She's great too!
Liner notes say it is Jessi.
oh man! John's version is great but this just kills it. Waylon's voice turns this into gorgeous tragedy. Jesse just elevates it with her background vocals. When Waylon sings about this sort of stuff, it just carves my soul into pieces. " I Do Believe " does the same. What album is this from?
It is from the album, What goes around comes around.
@Christopher Burrell hey
Tim Miller, hey.
That’s Carter Robertson doing all the background vocals.
Kid Cooley brought me here@!
Willie,Waylon,Kris and Johnny really knew how to reach and truly understand the down and outers
Best version...
I came across Johnny Cash's version of this song about a month ago, and I have playing it constantly. Today I heard Merle Haggard's version, but he can't beat Johnny Cash. Tonight I heard Waylon's version, and he's got Cash and Haggard beat by a mile. Way to go Waylon.
+Gretna Vincent sorry about the spelling errors, I hate autocorrect!
Who the heck is Luke Bryan? Is he one of those new country singers?
Waylon did it first. A good 95% of all songs are done best by the first person to record it. There are a few noteworthy exceptions to this rule, but not many.
hoot hootie Agreed. This is definitive. Thanks.
No disrespect to the great Johnny Cash, but this is the best version.
+R Paz I loved Johnny Cash nearly as much as his daughter Rosanne, but I must agree with you! Waylon did this best!
I have this album and this is one of the songs I play the most..
love you hoss , wish you were still with us
From which album is this song taken?
Thomas Buskhagen, what goes around comes around I think
This was also covered by The Seldom Scene with my recently departed friend, Mike Auldridge on Dobro.
When prolific Country songwriter, Harlan Howard, was asked for his success formula in writing successful Country songs, he said "Three chords and the truth!"
yeah it's just great man...
That voice, the emotion, love the part '' oh how many travelers get weary '', the almost cracking in his voice. it gets me every-time. miss you Waylon..
R Paz Allways miss the Outlaws
Waylon will live in our hearts forever
Great song from a Master
Eddie the more I listen to this song the more I love it. What a great tune.
