Jennings, Waylon - Old Friend Lyrics
Was it really years ago
It seems like only yesterday
The last time that I saw
You laugh at me and fly away.
And the songs we used to sing
Old friend we sure have missed you
But you ain't missed a thing.
Lord you should've heard the music
And all the changes it's gone through
But the funny thing is lately
It keeps an easing back to you.
But there's always something missing
Old friend we sure have missed you
But you ain't missed a thing.
They've been writin' books about you
And the stories that they tell
Make you look like some kind of angel
But we both know you're mean as hell.
I've had my share of hard times
But I've lived through the strain
Old friend I sure have missed you
But you ain't missed a thing.
People talk about you
After all this time
You were many things to many people
But you were a friend of mine.
I've been thinking bout how long
You've been gone the things you've never seen
But old friend I sure have missed you
But you ain't missed a thing.
Old buddy we sure have missed you
But you ain't missed a thing...

This song is brilliant.
Waylon Jennings sang The Stage (Stars In Heaven) which is a very poignant song about the Day The Music Died.

Sad. All of the legends are dying out. They'll always live on with us though. RIP Waylon and Buddy.
Do not count this winner out. He may be gone but he sure an't forgotten.

One of many fine records that have come out over the years, most of them tributes to Buddy individually, but some to all three singers who lost their lives in that plane crash. Eddie Cochran, Mike Berry, Don Maclean and Dion Dimucci all come to mind as having done such recordings.
"Oh Buddy, we sure have missed you...."
this song made me cry poor waylon poor buddy
Lana's Facebook Prayer Group
That is a very beautiful song and it's so touching.
Waylon, ""Old Friend"" was a real hit! Waylon Buddy Holly was your friend and you started rock n roll! Waylon I know you were the best country singer cousin! I remember you Waylon Bob B Westmorlin at the OL Country Church in LIttlefield,Tx! Patricia Westmorlin Blair Patrick my cousin was there with me and I was singing when the gaithers were there! Waylon our cousin we love you and you just had a birthday! I love ❤️ you cousin Waylon! 🌹
great tribute
I wish Buddy and Waylon were still around today to continue to provide music!! Buddy was one of the very first people to appreciate Waylon's music and he helped Waylon get the start he needed.. there has never been another Buddy Holly or Waylon Jennings, two amazing artists who are surely missed!!!
Buddy had plans for Waylon when the Winter Dance Party tour finished up in February 1959 and he got his studio built in Lubbock. Even Buddy knew that Rock n Roll was not Waylon's calling. Who knows? Maybe Waylon Jennings would have been a country music superstar 15 earlier but sadly all we can do is speculate.
yeah that's another "what if?" type situation., maybe Buddy would've crossed over to the country field for a song or two since he was a fan of country and bluegrass!! when I think of what happened to Buddy, Ritchie, The Big Bopper, Jim Croce, John Denver, etc. all of whom passed away in plane crashes, I just think that if they were all alive today as well and healthy, they would've continued to be successful and influence other people, they've influenced me very much so!! I would've loved to shake their hands and thank them for the music and the inspiration!! and also to Waylon among others
buddy holley would of been as big or bigger than Elvis
I was only 3 1/2 years old when we lost Buddy but I DISTOVERED his music when I was 12 and been a fan since, As a music lover I love lots of different music but Buddy and Waylon are on top of my list.. RIP Buddy and Waylon, God Bless, God Keep
At least Waylon and Buddy are reunited now! =) R.I.P Buddy Holly And Waylon Jennings. =( <3
PrincessPeachFan100 Sad, and not true! Sorry! When the Lord comes to receive us unto himself, those who sleep in Christ will rise first and we who remain alive will be caught up with them in the air! At least Buddy knew the truth about salvation before his being taken from us! My son looks soo much like Buddy Holly, I can't believe it, when I noticed it! I love those beautiful people! God save a place for Buddy and the rest in heaven!
@Shawnee River So as waylon on November 22,2001 he gave his life to christ.
Thanks, it'll be their turn to write now, hope they leave a little out about your hell-raising days. See ya friend
two good friends buddy and Waylon. I love this song.
Superb song.
Whoever thumbs down this has never lost a friend due to death. Waylon was the real deal, his and Buddy Holly's likes will never be seen again in this world.
@Triston Smith I wouldn't say "Hang Themselves", but I will say the are pretenders and poseurs!
+CD Carter True lol sometimes I take things a little far. I'm only 32 but I grew up listening to Hank Snow, Waylon, Hank Sr and Little Jimmy Dickens. The music today while there are some who try to hold true to the music just doesn't have the same soul.
I got what you were saying! Marty Stuart has said the most rebel thing to do in Nashville, Tennessee these days is play Country music....he's right! Peace out.
Never lost a friend the calibre of Buddy and certainly do not understand the magnitude of that loss
We sure do miss you and your music my friend
just another great tune dam does this man have many n i mean many great tunes
FUCKE LEGEND (enough said)......!!!!
This song always makes me cry a little :-(. So sad about Waylon losing his best friend Buddy Holly so young
I get a lump in my throat.
I saw Waylon live with the Crickets 3 times..thank you God for that gift
How was it?
it's been over a year, dad... I still miss you. Waylon was one of your favorites, and every time I listen to this song, you come to mind. I love you.
You can just hear the sadness in his voice. How sad :/
A great tribute.
Aint even a country fan....but I love Waylon !
damn, damn. DAMN! we need you more than ever WAYLON!!!
Buddy and Waylon--Miss ya both, fellas! I blast your stuff in my college apartment n at the parties..You will keep ramblin on as long we we keep rollin!!!!
2-3-2014 we all know this is about Buddy Holly. if u don't then learn history.
Not just history, know the first thing about Waylon
We miss YOU Waylon.
he wooda been on that plane, too; but he gave up his seat to the big bopper who had a cold and waylon took pity on him and elected to take the bus, instead. prior to the flight buddy had told waylon: "hope you freeze your ass on that bus". waylon said: "hope your plane goes down". waylon said later it took him years to get over that even though him and buddy were just fooling with eachother.
@Lori Gehring: It's on "Are You Ready For The Country?"
Im 13 and my dad would jam Waylon all the time RIP
I wish God would have made more in this particular image too. At least one more, for me.
thanks for the post. great man, named my son after him. waylon in peace
@Bopalena With all due respect, we had the Beatles because of the Crickets. Hendrix had some of Buddy in him, Mr. Holly would have been a headliner at Woodstock, Civil Rights Buddy was about a decade ahead of that -- The FIRST white act at the Apollo, hello.
Pretty song, but Buddy missed a LOT of things like the Beatles, Hendrix, Woodstock, dope, Viet Nam, student protest and the civil rights movement. I wonder what Buddy would've thought of those things?
My car's on fire! Would've been some good music for sure.
old friend i sure do miss you but you missed a thing.
One helluva HOSS. One helluv an outlaw. One helluva singer. R.I.P. Waymore.
R.I.P. Waylon and Buddy
Okay. So Waylon missed a plane flight. Okay, its understood. This track gotta be about tablets.
@1974Pbass ALRIGHT, alright, I'm going to settle this, once for all. Now listen up.
Waylon was playing a gig in China that night and nowhere near Iowa.
I gave Valens my seat on that damned plane. I also gave my seat to The Bopper. I had two seats. As soon as they were aboard, I stuck a lit match in the gas tank.
After the crash, I wrote this song and recorded it. I stuck Waylon's picture on the front of the album and stuck another on the back. Slipped the record in between. GOT IT?
How many of you people making these "SNIDE" remarks realize that Waylon was Buddy Holly's bass guitar player & he gave up his seat on the plane that night to Big Bopper as Bopper was sick. If that hadn't happened threre would have been no Waylon the "HIT MAKER. And last ,but, not least this man "NEVER sang a CRAP song.
@shmoinal why not remove this kind of crap ???? he could express himself better than this...I hope....
truly beautiful!
I am fortunate enough to have seen them all close up and personal at The Great Southeast Music Hall in Atlanta. I am 63 and have been a fan of "The Hoss" since the late 60's. His image changed for the better but his music was always the same, pure and real.
Now that´s the truth about good ol´ Waylon. Waylon was the real thing and Waylon WAS COUNTRY! Wish he could have lived forever........Waylons vocals and his texts were the BEST. Country today, NEVER even comes close to good Ol´ Waylon, whoop whoop.......WAYLON FOREVER! RIP LEGEND
Jens from Denmark
All through his life Waylon kept difting back to Buddy Holly. He truly was tuched by Buddy. We all have been blessed by both.
Amen! Amen, INDEED!
Hey man thats alright I aways wished I could have lived back when Hank Williams Sr. was goin but thanks to records, tape, and cds we have been able to catch up on all the great music!!!
@goon0202 and Gnu831
I just finally last year got to see Willie, and I'm 27 in Hiwassee, GA. Damn good show, and he was very courteous too. Went with the great aunt and I'm glad her and I both got to see him while he's still in good shape.
The melody is very similar to BOB WILLS IS STILL THE KING.
Gone but never forgotten.
Thank you God for Waylon and his music.
shooter might want to add a slappin bass or a fiddle sounds to much like john cougar
I love this song! I've been looking everywhere for it. It's not listed on Waylon Jennings' discographies or video lists. Thanks a lot! Love it!
Waylon was the best!!! Others can only hope to sound as good as he was.
SO good!
God this guy is still the best, love ya hoss!
It sure must have been tough on him. Especially after they got back on the bus for the next venue after Moorhead, Minnesota. Buddy's, Ritchie's, and the Bopper's guitars and personal effects were still on the bus...heartbreaking
Love this song, great tribute. Poor Waylon, how hard it must have been when Buddy passed.
