Jennings, Waylon - My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys Lyrics

I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' a cowboy, and lovin' the cowboy ways.
Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned all the rules of the modern-day drifter,
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.

My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare,
Knowin' well your best days are gone.
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, an 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.

My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

Read about Sharon Vaughn, the songwriter for this classic song! "Vaughn’s first cut was "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys",[5] that was first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1976 and further popularized in 1980 by Willie Nelson for the soundtrack of the movie The Electric Horseman.[6]"

  23. E.... F....

Oh man, this is much better than pot head Willie.

    E.... F....

Liz: Waylon and Willie always shared the dobber.

    E.... F....

Waylon was a massive coke head for a long time. I think that Willie has proven that his way of self medicating is the better way.

I love music. From the great scores of classical artists, to this kind of music. Songs like these are true art and poetry in sound just like a great symphony or a Williams Star Wars movie score. Masters at their musical forms. I love them all.

  34. J.... L....

There have been a lot of songs that I feel could have been written about me. But this song is at the top of the list. Waylon had a special way of making every song feel like it was about you.

@Aaron Webb I like Chris and Sturgil, But have you heard of Colter Wall he is a great newer country singer, not like the carptry singers like Jason alde and Luke brain etc

  41. A.... P....

    I miss you Waylon!!

  42. J.... P....

One of my favorites and also I like this version over the original

    J.... P....

Sharon Vaughn wrote it, Waylon released it in 1976, Willie released it in 1980. If someone did it before them, I don't know. I pick Waylon hands down!!!

    J.... P....

I like Willie's version. Maybe because I heard it first and really liked it. They both do it great and its a true country classic!!

    J.... P....

I'd only heard the Willie version before but I have to say, Waylon's is MUCH BETTER. I've got a bit of an attitude about pot-head Willie so there's that. But seriously, I love Waylon's' voice.

    J.... P....

In my opinion, Waylon definitely does it best. Just the right tempo. I like Willie's and Chris Ledoux's versions also, but to me Willie sings it a little slow and Chris sings it a little fast...Waylon is just right.

    J.... P....

I just saw Sharon Vaughn tell the story of pitching to Waylon. She went to his office uninvited, got in to see him, played it for him and he cut it that night. So Waylon was first.
