Jennings, Waylon - Mississippi Woman Lyrics

The reflections of the trees are cut by the bow of my pirogue
And spattered by the paddle of my eager hand
That Mississippi woman is a wavin' over yonder
Wavin' her lantern for her Louisiana man.

How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me.

The lantern light and moonbeams are dancing patterns on the water
She doesn't seem to realize I've learned her secret plans
My jealous mind is thinking as I paddle through the sleeping alligators
She don't know I know about her Louisiana man.

How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me.

The reflections of the trees are cut by the bow of my pirogue
And splattered by the paddle of my shaky hand
The silence from behind me is alive with the splashing alligators
And the lantern light is blinking on the bottom in the sand.

How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me.

How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me...

    Mississippi Woman lyrics
    (Red Lane)

The reflections of the trees are cut by the bow of my pirogue
And spattered by the paddle of my eager hand
That Mississippi woman is a wavin’ over yonder
Wavin’ her lantern for her Louisiana man.
How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me.
The lantern light and moonbeams are dancing patterns on the water
She doesn’t seem to realize I’ve learned her secret plans
My jealous mind is thinking as I paddle through the sleeping alligators
She don’t know I know about her Louisiana man.
How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart does not belong to me.
The reflections of the trees are cut by the bow of my pirogue
And splattered by the paddle of my shaky hand
The silence from behind me is alive with the splashing alligators
And the lantern light is blinking on the bottom in the sand.
How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart did not belong to me.
How I love that Mississippi woman
How I love that Mississippi girl
How I love that Mississippi woman
But her heart did not belong to me…

There are very few singers that you can hear a couple chords from, and know who it is before they sing one note.......Waylon was one of those men. I never heard a Waylon song I didn't like. R.I.P Hoss.

    I agree.

I feel this was on the first songs Waylon did on an album that had what would become his signature sound that would become Outlaw Country, this was a precursor to the Lonesome Onry and Mean Album where we see the Outlaw sound that Waylon become a known for on full display.

This was on the TULSA/THE TAKER album, released in 1971. It was the first country album I ever bought, because of this song. I still have it and it plays great.

The original recording was something to hear, this version is frankly a bit butchered, but Waylon Jennings was always cool to hear:)

There is another song from bayou country that I'm looking for. I don't know the title or singer. The first lines are, "I'm up to my rump in a cypress swamp; Spanish moss and alligators. I'm back to the stink of drying mink and wild boars digging at my potatoes.' Can anyone identify it.

I'm sure by now, you've found the song you were looking for. But, if for some odd chance, you're still pondering, the song you are looking for is Doug Kershaw - (Had Not Been Been) My Sally Jo.
