Jennings, Waylon - Baker Street Lyrics

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Lite in your head and dead on your feet
Well, another crazy day you drink the night away
And forget about everything.

These city streets make you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything.

Used to think that it was so easy
Used to say that it was so easy
You're tryin', you're tryin' now
Another year and then you'd be happy
One more year and then you'd be happy
You're cryin', you're cryin' now.

Way down the street there's a light in his place
You open the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything.

He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
Then he'll settle down, it's a quiet little town
And forget about everything.

But you know he'll always keep moving
Know he's never gonna stop moving
'Cause he's rollin', he's the rolling stone
And when you wake up it's a new morning
The sun is shining it's a new morning
You're goin' you're goin' home...

Jennings, Waylon Baker Street Comments
  1. B.... M....

This is true to the original idea. The guitar player didn't show up so Gerry gave it to a sax player

  2. D.... D....

Gerry Rafferty did this song back in the 70's. Waylon is missing the saxophone. That saxophone gave this song a sound all it's own.

  3. T.... T....

Waylon jennings is a great singer

  4. M.... K....

Not bad!! I liked this version. Well done!!

  5. G.... T....

  6. S.... o....

Bad To The Bone This Dude is!

  7. g.... ....

Waylon's phrasing is textbook. Excellent. I love Gerry Rafferty's voice, but he tended to rush his words now and then to get the thoughts out. Good job!

  8. B.... G....

A man with lots of soul.

  17. A.... l....

wooow this song really suit Waylon Voice so clear so rich wow

  18. J.... K....

The sax part was originally meant to be played on guitar but the guitar was left in the car at the time recording was taking place. So...a sax was used instead. True story... Waylon's version is what it was intended to sound like.

    J.... K....

Jeff K Cool little fact! I never knew that!

  19. J.... P....

This song was playing in the background this first time I heard it was at my parole hearing in algoa

  21. M.... H....

I Am stuck on Bakers STeet

  22. R.... H....

Never liked the song... until I heard this version. I guess I am just biased towards anything that Waylon did. The original was a great piece of work but... I just didn't like it. Still a bit too much instrumentation in this for me... but Waylon makes it ok.

  23. P.... J....

    Omg....soooo good😍

  24. I.... C....

    The "Jennings Treatment".
    Funny!

    I.... C....

Shelley Sharun, or as Jessi would call it, " Waylonizing it. "

    W.... L....

Bet you like signing your name ☺

  27. A.... D....

Why ... Why have I never heard this why is it not played on the radio

  28. r.... b....

I’m in love with 2 dead men Waylon and Elvis, I think I’m crazy or something because they are the best looking men I’ve ever laid my eyes on

  29. A.... ....

Better than the original, in my opinion

    A.... ....

    Not hardly lol

    A.... ....

I like the western rugged vibe of this version rather than the original

  30. r.... b....

I’m in love with 2 dead men Elvis and Waylon, I could never give either one up

  31. M.... M....

I love Waylon. I still like Gerry Rafferty's version.

  32. D.... F....

This is one of the most classic songs ever written......lots have done it. Waylon and the Outlaws know this well. Perfection.

  33. j.... b....

    Pretty damn good!

    j.... b....

Im a huge Waylon fan, butI still love the original better.

  34. B.... K....

    2018 anyone ?

  35. M.... D....

    Wow.........amazing......love this talented man......❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  36. s.... j....

    Never be another Waylon...

  37. M.... S....

    nicely done

  38. C.... E....

IF HOSS ain't the #1 outlaw county singer he sure is beating the hell out of whoever is #2!!! THAT voice is unmistakable!!!

    C.... E....

Clinical Educator1, forget outlaw country, in my mind Waylon is amongst the greatest acts ever in all of country music, he holds second place to no one, especially not to any of his contemporaries.

  39. r.... ....

    the original is better

  40. W.... ....

Waylon just gives the lyrics more credibility and puts more soul into it.

  41. V.... B....

    SHERLOCK JENNINGS or WAYLON HOLMES?

  42. r.... g....

I'm just a huge Waylon fan so to me he's just good I think his voice is sexy

    r.... g....

rose garrett especially when he gets in that deep tone!

  43. P.... a....

This version was meant just a cover song not a single like the original guy did. This was simply Waylon doing what he done better than anybody else . Let raferdy or whoever it was try singing mamas , or good hearted woman or rose in paradise, he would be booed of the stage at best

    P.... a....

true, but rafferty owned this while waylon just sounds good

    P.... a....

Phoenix arizona, you hit the nail on the head, Waylon covered other people's songs better than any of his contemporaries did.

    P.... a....

Apples and oranges. Gerry Rafferty wrote and performed a lot of great songs, and is one of my favorite artists. Waylon is another favorite. I do have to agree I can't imagine Rafferty doing Waylon's songs. But you never know. Might be better than you think, we'll never know.

    P.... a....

I like Waylon and Gerry and I must say that Waylon couldn't preform a lot of Raffertys songs with the right how you say "Groove" I couldn't imaging songs like "Waters of Forgetfullness" or "Standing at the Gates" performed by Jennings. Just as I cant see "Good Hearted Woman" or "Aint Livin Long Like This" performed by Gerry. I dont see why we cant have two great artists and the idea that one HAS to be better than the other in every way. Also Gerry Rafferty didn't even do live performances out of his pure shyness and hatred for the music industry as a whole.

  44. S.... D....

A chill ran down my back when this song started to play. Waylon Jennings is one of the greats music legends of all time.

  45. T.... M....

i truly like the song. love the waylon version the most. probably because i'm a huge fan of waylon Jennings ,the man, the legend , the artist.

  46. J.... U....

I opened this video unsuspectingly. I had to clutch at my heart. Seriously. I haven't heard this song since the late '90s when my mother would play it non-stop. Hearing this version of the riff just threw me back in my childhood and it feels too strange. This may not be his most popular album but it just happened to be the one she played all the time and so it was the one that made me a fan.

  47. E.... D....

Live in Hinkley,MN 2001 this revolutionized a young man's life, greatest time I recall &best cover of one of the greatest songs ever

  48. H.... E....

Only heard Gerry Rafferty do this song.

  49. R.... C....

Did Gerry Rafferty ever hear this version?

    R.... C....

Ronald Charles Epstein don't know if he had, but I hope that he liked it if he heard Waylon Jennings sing his song.

    R.... C....

He did and felt very honored because Waylon was one of Gerry's favorite artist...and finally felt vindication (Gerry) that a superstar would take the time to cover and record one of his songs.

  50. N.... D....

I have known Waylon many years and never knew he did this

    N.... D....

Waylon continues to surprise us all ! He was one of the greatest music masters.

  51. N.... M....

@***** It is a good version, but to say that I'm dreaming is little much. I never did like this song, I think Waylon's version is better, but still don't like it LOL You gotta be a Waylon fan to see it I guess.

  52. s.... ....

the man whose sax solo made that recording died on 24Oct14 at the age of 60....he was paid $50 for the session and the cheque bounced....but Waylon has a better feel for the tune than say, the Foo Fighters....

    s.... ....

no shit you say? prolly one of the greatest sax solo's in popular music, and dude didn't get paid for it? holy shit

    s.... ....

sulyn2254 the saxophonist with Gerry Rafferty was named Raphael Ravenscroft that was a fantastic sax solo

    s.... ....

Check wasn't bounced thats a common misconception. Also I may add that 50$ was the common fee for session musicians. AND he didn't even actually write the solo as we can see the same riff being played on guitar, bass, keyboard and EVEN HUMMED in all the demo versions of "Bakers Street".

  53. M.... H....

I'm in love with a dead man.

    M.... H....

Christopher Burrell your words are so true!! I grew up on country music & followed Waylon for yrs,I think I know more about him than I know about myself.lol the range of his voice was magnificent, paired with his rugged good looks,& guitar pickin,he didn't have an easy go of it either.but still remained true to himself & the music.& actually a Great guy, always appreciated his fans.i can go on & on. I was disappointed when I first heard his son shooter sing.his voice doesn't compare to his father's at all.oh well such is life
But no one will fill Waylons boots!! Certainly not what they call country today.thanks for the reply Christopher😉👍

    M.... H....

Be careful MaryAnn, you can be charged with Necrophilia if you get caught.

    M.... H....

I would give anything to have been Jessi just for one night.

    M.... H....

    Me too! 😍🐺👍

  54. S.... Y....

    Waylon Jennings

  55. G.... L....

First movie I saw in a theater was Nashville Rebel staring Waylon. My father's brother was a studio guitarist at Sun Records in Memphis. I was fortunate to grow up listening to some of the greatest artists of the 60's and 70's including John R. Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon, Willie and Elvis. Of course in order to rebel I grew my hair long and joined a rock and roll band. In retrospect I was pretty much what each of these artists would later evolve into. Here's hoping Mom forgives me.

  56. J.... r....

Your are right. Once Waylon had it, it was the best by far. Always Waylon for me too.

  57. d.... ....

Heres one I have not heard.

  58. D.... J....

This is on parr or maybe a little better than Rafferty's version.

  59. m.... ....

I'm only 32 but I'm so sad for the state of country music! This is an amazing version of this song! 20 yrs from now we will never have the legends that we have now! I encourage everyone who likes this song to search youtube for a song called Rose in Paradise. My dad hasn't even heard of it. Easily my favorite Waylon song. When I heard he didn't know it, I was shocked. Youtube only has a few thousand views of this song, amazing!

    m.... ....

mcgarp, none of these clowns parading as country musicians these days could even come close to being in the same universe, let alone the same stratosphere with the likes of Waylon...the last of the legends whose music will endure far past their death will be some of the guys from the 80s and 90s like Strait, Tritt, and Jackson.

    m.... ....

And look at Tritt's influences... among his biggest influences is CLEARLY Waylon.

  60. G.... ....

    Good job Waylon! Rest Easy

  61. S.... ....

This is the first time I've heard this cover, and Waylon does a wonderful job of it. What else would anyone expect? Great art can only ever be great art, but you need to be a great artist as well to rise to a challenge like this...and Waylon certainly was that.

  62. M.... L....

    muy buen tema

  63. b.... ....

I don't get into a lot of country, but Waylon, WIllie and George Jones are at the top of the list when I do. This is also a classic song, never heard a bad cover by anyone. From Waylon to the Foo Fighters, if you're a good musician, you can make this song your own. Great post, thanks!

  64. m.... ....

This may be one of the best remakes ever! I love this tune!

  65. m.... ....

I saw him on his last tour, He rocked this song, closed the show with it, it was bad ass.

  66. T.... T....

While i love waylon and it is a good version i think gerry rafferty has the better version but only by a small margin

  67. K.... ....

Now...if someone could come up with MacArthur Park. That was late sixties I believe. Someone screamed that out for him to sing at the last concert of his I saw and he said, "brother you go waaaay back." I go way back with Waylon too in the Buddy Holly days.

    K.... ....

Kat38 but isn't the same feel to the song without the Kimberly's being there...

  68. K.... ....

Thank you so much Teddie, I've loved this song since the seventies. Had NO idea Waylon cut it too!

  69. c.... ....

This is proof that 'ol Waylon could sing anything!!!!!!!!

    c.... ....

chevellejack OMG!! That is the truth......Waylon could sing ANY song and he would make it memorable for his fans.....no doubt about it!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    c.... ....

    chevellejack absolutely SO❤👍

  70. V.... ....

@aeroshine Not totally correct , for instance there's a song, could be LuckenbacK Texas, but I'm not sure, well he said he kept on singing that only for the audience, cause he admit he hate (or about that) that song.Bye

    V.... ....

VNTPLA he also said that about Wurlitzer Prize, he said he tried slowly working it out of the live shows.

  71. A.... D....

Mashallah : Great song, great performance, great artist.

  72. j.... p....

Fake........ what the bloody hell is fake about it chrisdissident, Waylon is just a bloody legend and thats all there is to it.

  73. C.... T....
